Do you believe Democrats wouldn’t tolerate authoritarianism from a Democrat POTUS?

r/

Actually asking, it’s not a rhetorical question.

Suppose a Democratic president has decided to pull Fox News press credentials, deport people speaking out against their policies, find ways to punish law firms against their policies, and saying things like getting rid of judges ruling against them and third terms.

Do you believe Democrats would stand against this? Would they be all over media clearly condemning the actions? Would they begin impeachment proceedings? Would they tell people, clearly, “you should not vote for this Democrat president” if the alternative were a Republican?

Yes, democrats would not stand for it. We would absolutely impeach.

It’s hard to say, honestly. Everything depends on context. I could see the Democrats “playing hardball” to correct the wrongs of the Trump admin, and potentially getting support. How the Democrats would be authoritarian is different from how the GOP is being authoritarian. They wouldn’t deport people, for instance.

Prior to Trump doing all that he’s done I would have said yes. But now for some people it’s all fair game I suppose.

Democrats don’t tolerate basic policy conversations from a Democratic POTUS.

Absolutely. We’re against that type of bullshit.

    >Would they be all over media clearly condemning the actions?

Absolutely. We actually hold our politicians accountable.

    >Would they begin impeachment proceedings?

    Yes.

    >Would they tell people, clearly, “you should not vote for this Democrat president” if the alternative were a Republican?

    Yes.

If your question is Democrats have more respect for Democracy vs Republicans then we would not tolerate authoritarianism.

How long before the boom would be lowered if Obama started snatching white people off the streets and sending them to foreign prisons without due process?

Find any sitting member of Congress, governors or other active Democratic party members espousing authoritarian rhetoric.

    I’ll wait.

Some Democrats openly support authoritarianism wholeheartedly. Most don’t.

  10. conn_r2112 Avatar

They would stand against it 100000%

  11. 2dank4normies Avatar

No I don’t see Democrats doing what MAGA is doing. Democrats don’t have a large enough base of crazies. Republicans have a near monopoly on political lunatics as far as actual representation in government goes. The extremist voices on the left have essential no representation.

  12. Impossible-Throat-59 Avatar

Do you have any idea how much infighting there is on the left? No I don’t think they’d tolerate it.

  13. letusnottalkfalsely Avatar

I think we’ve proven that given the opportunities for authoritarianism that we didn’t embrace.

  14. DangerousDem Avatar

Omg is this a real question. One. Hundred. Fucking. Percent. Democrats wouldn’t stand for it! Have you heard of Al Franken!?

  15. twilight-actual Avatar

Before Trump? No, it wouldn’t have been tolerated.

If Trump stomps all over the Consitution, ignores the courts and Congress, perhaps attempts another coup? Or if SCOTUS is in on it?

  16. ziptasker Avatar

I wouldn’t tolerate it. This is why I try to be active in local (democratic) politics. To support people I think are good, but also to keep an eye on them and speak up if I need to. Trust but verify. This is what being a citizen is all about.

I think the current Dem party amongst the elected members, mostly yes.

But probably not the future one. The Dem party has been so thoroughly decayed by its worship of institutions and moderacy, it’s in a very weakened position for a hostile takeover (think GOP in 2013-2016).

    And 50/50 with Dem voters.

Reality is Dems want a fighter. And there’s definitely a lot of firewood for a person who implements universal healthcare and starts calling the courts bluffs.

I believe that most people, on either side of the aisle, who constantly talk politics online, would prefer an authoritarian dictatorship run by a party/leader of their shared ideology over democracy. And I think this somewhat extends into everyday life as well.

It’s a fairly uncomfortable reality. This is why running on “democracy” was a really silly strategy by Kamala campaign.

  19. vibes86 Avatar

Yeah we’d go after them. Like we’re going after fetterman in Pa for not doing what he said. He’s been asked repeatedly to resign and we’re going to primary him.

  20. BettisBus Avatar

The most authoritarian action by Biden was the OSHA COVID vaccine requirement for federal workers and contractors. I don’t remember Democrats marching in lock step with this requirement, but if I grant it being mostly popular with Dems, we didn’t make a huge stink when courts deemed it unconstitutional. We just moved on with our lives.

  21. QultyThrowaway Avatar

Democrats can’t even stand for Biden going to a debate sick.

  22. Poorly-Drawn-Beagle Avatar

They don’t even stand for higher-than-average competence from a Democrat POTUS

  23. GreatResetBet Avatar

    Simply put- NO.

We do not circle the wagons like Republicans.

We do not have the culture of “thou shall not speak ill of another Democrat” lke Republicans do.

We WILL put one of our own on trial.

We DID force out Joe Biden (finally)

There would be much, much more open disagreement and open calls for impeachment among Democrats if a president were to try anything close to the level of crap Trump does on a regular basis.

  24. IRockToPJ Avatar

Of course. We all demanded Al Franken resign from the senate when we all knew it was ridiculous to end his career over that situation. No way democrats would tolerate the nonsense Trump is doing.

  25. ReadinII Avatar

I would love to say Democrats wouldn’t tolerate it, but I honestly thought Republicans wouldn’t tolerate it either.

When the Supreme Court was ignoring the Constitution to enact policies the left favored, the left responded by telling us that “the Constitution says what the Supreme Court says it says”.

When Bill Clinton was believed to have obstructed justice and was suspected of suborning perjury, the Democrats responded with a unanimous vote to acquit him of the impeachment charges.

When Obama bragged that he could bypass Congress because he has “a pen and a phone” and the proceeded to use executive orders, Democrats cheered.

Democrats excused Obama when he started a publicly planned in advance (i.e. no need for secrecy or haste) war without Congressional approval.

Before 2016 it was pretty clear that the Democrats were more willing than Republicans to be authoritarian.

But I thought there were limits on what Democracy would do.

However I also thought Republicans would never do something like this.

So while I would love to say the Democrats would never go so far as Republicans have recently, I have to admit I’m not a good judge of character because I never thought Republicans would do that either.

Unless the Democratic Party was completely taken over by tankies, no

  27. SchlitzInMyVeins Avatar

Dems love to eat their own, even when they probably shouldn’t. You can guarantee they’d turn on a rogue potus.

If Joe Biden’s cabinet had been using Signal to distribute highly classified information to the Russians and Chinese I’d have been calling for their dismissal, and in the absence of that, Biden’s impeachment.

  29. aabum Avatar

The reaction from Democrats would be the same as that from Republicans regarding President Trump. The brain damaged people would support authoritarianism, while normal folks would oppose.

  30. OyenArdv Avatar

Dems would never elect a president like that. Trump used to be a democrat but he knew we wouldn’t let his BS fly, so he chose to run as a Republican.

  31. JackColon17 Avatar

I think the percentage of people not tolerating that kind of shenanigans would be higher among the dems

  32. Lamballama Avatar

I don’t see political deportations happening, but Fox News losing credentials and bullying the courts to rule how they want I could see being popular on the left (the latter being a longstanding tradition since the days of FDR)

  33. ithomas101 Avatar

Democrats went against Al Franken for things that are now considered a slap on the wrist in Trumpian times. Yeah we would NOT be okay with Democrat authoritarianism.

  34. atierney14 Avatar

lol, democrats get pissed when someone talks out of line.

They are on the opposite side of this dictator and still voting to censure people like Al Green for speaking at the wrong time.

While it is frustrating that they’re such a stickler for the rules, given we’re midway through a dog scoring 30 on us and they’re still saying, “there’s no dogs in basketball!” Nonetheless, they’re sticklers, so it wouldn’t be tolerated.

  36. PayFormer387 Avatar

A democrat wouldn’t do that. So. . . Moot question.

  37. bluehorserunning Avatar

SCOTUS granted presidential immunity during the Biden administration. If he had wanted to go to the dark side, he could have.

  38. gordonf23 Avatar

Liberals/Democrats criticize their elected officials all the time. No, we would not tolerate authoritarianism from a Democrat POTUS. Republicans are the ones who always do and believe whatever they’re told to do and believe.

  39. Kerplonk Avatar

I don’t know how effective they would be at it, but I do think they would not tolerate someone doing the kinds of things Trump is doing. Not all of them, but the liberal coalition is much less solidly held together than the conservative one and we are willing to toss each other out for much less. It’s a certainty that some members would be all over the media condemning them. It’s a crap shoot if the Speaker would be someone willing to impeach or not, but there would certainly be enough members of the party voting with Republicans to do so and likely enough votes in the Senate to remove him/her as well (especially since the VP would likely assumethe presidency and thus they would maintain power over that branch of government). The Republican party is so bad at the moment I don’t know if they would be able to produce a better candidate, but I don’t think someone like that would ever make it throught the primary process where our voters were forced into such a choice.
