What does the title “visiting fellow” mean?

r/

Title says it. What does this person “do”? At, say, Harvard.

Had to pick a flair, nothing applied.

Usually means someone who is temporarily at the university, usually to do research. They have some home institution that they will return to when it is over. This is, I think usually just for a year or two.

Visiting means temporary and fellow can mean either research (more common at R1) or teaching. Just depends on the actual circumstances. We’d need to hear more to give you more specific answers.

A fellowship is usually a research position (in my field, History). There are a bunch of different types, probably the most common being named fellowships for early career research. A visiting fellow is someone who is able to use the University’s facilities, probably gets an office etc, but doesn’t get paid by that university (you might get perks like accom or a travel bursar).

Instead, you already have a job, which is who pays you. You go on a visiting fellowship during your paid research period (how frequent these are depends on your contract), mainly for the prestige (like, you must be pretty good if you won a fellowship at Harvard or whatever).

They usually research, interact with the other staff in their field, and will probably guest lecture, give seminars, or publish in a journal supported by that department.

And who feeds them? Are they sponsored by their own outfit?

I was a visiting fellow at an institution while I was doing fieldwork for my PhD.

A professor at one of the departments sponsored me as a supervisor for my fieldwork. They then helped me contact the right places to organise a visa and accommodation. The visiting fellowship gave me access to the university’s facilities, in particular their library. I was given an office too which was nice.

I had a friend come to my home country do something similar. He took research leave to come here on sabbatical. He was sponsored by a professor here and basically the same situation.

The visiting fellowships can be remote as well depending on the nature of the work. My wife is a visiting fellow in this regard. They want her to have access to their organisational information but value her input largely because of the work she can do at her home institution. It’s a bit of an odd arrangement but it works.

Most of the time it’s usually 6-months to a year but in can be extended depending on the project or case by case.

They would similar to a post-doc working in research with a faculty member, but not paid by the faculty member. They would either be self-funded, funded by their home country, or have a grant/scholarship, etc. But it gives them an official position at the university so they can have access to the lab, library, network, etc.
