If Trump wouldn’t have been there, he wouldn’t have gotten roasted by Obama, and thus not have the motivation to undo everything Obama did.

Celebrities are invited too. It’s not just journalists in the crowd.
Glad I’m not the only one who thinks his entire agenda is getting back at Obama.
There’s always celebrity guests.
There are always guests at the dinner who aren’t politicians or journalists.
But it’s very likely that Obama still would have done the bit about his birth certificate, even if Trump wasn’t there.
Obama wanted to roast Trump
Trump wants only one thing: attention. He will go anywhere, be seen with anyone, say anything to get attention. Negative or positive, he doesn’t care.
Media outlets that have tables reserved at the WHCD have a certain number of tickets where they can invite guests. Often these are celebrities.
I believe Trump was invited by Fox News. But he was invited because this was at the height of his birther schtick – the single most idiotic publicity stunt imaginable to endear him to the Tea Party base.
It was widely assumed to be good television to get Trump in the same room as Obama, and for Obama to have a go at Trump. And, boy, was it! Trump got torched so badly that he decided to forego running for President in 2012, which he had been publicly flirting with. And the day after it was announced that Osama bin Laden had been killed, and this was on the heels of Obama releasing his long-form birth certificate. So Trump implicitly saw 2012 as unwinnable for him, despite there being a splintered GOP field that the base was unsatisfied with.
