What are your thoughts on some of the younger candidates running for congress?

r/

I’m pleased that some younger folks are running for congressional seats! The geronotocracy of the democratic party is a huge blemish IMO. Some of the races I’ve been watching (although they’re pretty early) are Kat Abughazaleh in Jan Schakowski’s district, Deja Foxx in Raul Grijalva’s old district, Isaiah Martin (who i have my qualms about) in Sheila Jackson Lee’s old district. Are there any other candidates out there? And what opinions do you have of any of these candidates so far if you’ve been observing them?

I’m of two minds on this. There are young people who are really impressive in their own right and have natural political skills and leadership qualities. AOC unseated a member of her party’s leadership when she was 28. Joe Biden was elected to the Senate at 29. Pete Buttigieg won the Iowa Caucus in his late 30’s. I absolutely do not write anyone off automatically because of their age.

On the other hand, governing is serious business and experience matters. Life and lived experience matters.

I’m personally wary of the idea of someone deciding business tax rates if they’ve never had to sign someone’s paycheck before or have no idea what it is like to run a business. I’m wary of someone who doesn’t know what it is like to raise children to decide what policies are best for parents and schools. I’m wary of someone who has never held a real job before making decisions that impact tens of thousands of jobs.

I welcome young people. But I want qualified people.

And young does not necessarily mean unqualified. Donald Trump is simultaneously the oldest person elected to a presidential term in history and also the most heinously unqualified and unfit individual to ever assume that office.
