What do you think of pet taxidermy?

r/

I did a home visit and saw a taxidermied poodle. It looked so devoid of life. I thought maybe just unusual realistic looking soft toy or sculpture but as I noticed pinkish skin where fur does not cover the entire head. It looked like the dog was a bit old.

The idea of your beloved animal captured like that for years… I can understand wild animals but a dead poodle is not artistic. The poodle was displayed like an art piece on a coffee table between couches in the living room. I have been in the living room and it was not there before, so was unexpected.

I kind of love it. I follow this girl on TikTok who used to have this busted ass ugly cat named Pot Roast and the running joke was that she was bad taxidermy and that’s why she looked like that. So when Pot Roast died, her mom got her bones cleaned and articulated so she could be Good Taxidermy instead and now I pretty much just follow her for the occasional Bone Roast appearance. She had another cat who died and she had his skull crystallized. It’s probably only a matter of time until she gets one stuffed. And I just think it’s all so neat. If I can afford it when the time comes, I might do something similar for my boy

Personally it creeps me out to repurpose the real dead body of an animal as an art/sentimental piece. But I do know pets are very important to many owners, as a part of the family and people have different ways of coping or celebrating the life of a pet, so I get it.

    However i don’t own/never owned pets, so that’s my 2 cents. 😭
