How do people not rinse after brushing?

r/

I’ve seen in many guides that you should leave the fluoride on your teeth to get it whiter, but im just not sure how people do that? Like it feels so uncomfortable and makes me want to spit saliva every 2 secs. also what about when you drink/eat you swallow the fluoride along with it – is that not harmful (idk but gut feeling tells me so)?

It was gross for the first week or so when I started doing it, but now I don’t notice it.

We put fluoride in our drinking water. It’s safe to swallow incidental amounts of it.

I’ve only read about this very recently, it still seems weird to me, so I now rinse once or twice quickly, whereas before I would rinse several times thoroughly and sometimes would brush again with clean water.

i spit 2-3 times but don’t rinse and i don’t even notice it tbh. i also don’t usually eat for hours after i brush and try not to drink anything for a bit either. but at the end of the day toothpaste goes in your mouth, it’s designed to be safe to swallow cuz there’s no way it will never not happen lol

you have to make a conscious effort the first couple weeks and it’s gonna feel like you didn’t finish, but after a bit it feels normal. I do spit a couple times though, helps get out the excess

I spit the toothpaste out, but I don’t rinse. It doesn’t bother me. I don’t know what to say. I don’t use mouthwash anymore, but I have, and using mouthwash with alcohol feels way worse after.

  6. buzz8588 Avatar

I got used to it pretty quickly. Just spit once and done.

  7. dynamitewlazerbeam81 Avatar

My dentist told me that using mouthwash after brushing is just fine when I questioned this.

I usually don’t rinse after I spit, but it does no harm.

The amount of flouride to do harm is based on a weight/concentration ratio. 32-64 mg/kg in adults.

The amount of flouride in toothpaste is 0.75 to 1 mg of fluoride per strip of paste that covers a toothbrush.

And you spit most of that out, so it’s not even that much.

Because you’re not supposed to and I like having good teeth.

I also wait about 2 hrs before eating or drinking.

Been doing it for 30 years (since I started school)

I agree. I just can’t wrap my head around taking all that time to scrub the plaque off, and you just…. Leave it? Naw, thanks tho. I’ll just count on the fluoride in the water. I’m rinsing that crap out of my mouth. I’m convinced that this started so people would leave plaque in their mouths overnight, just sitting there making your breath stink. I will continue rinsing the toothpaste out.

Fluoride does not make your teeth whiter, strengthens your tooth enamel.

  12. AdSecure970 Avatar

I stopped after I read that your not supposed to do that but I also use mouthwash so idk if that counts as rinsing or not

  13. JoeGPM Avatar

I never rinse without brushing. Doesn’t bother me at all. Don’t overuse the necessary amount of toothpaste will help.

Fluoride is for strengthening your enamel, not for whitening.

you are not supposed to eat or drink after a flouride treatment.

If it’s toothpaste then you are supposed to rinse it out. If it is a fluoride rinse, then you are advised that after you swish and spit, you are not supposed to eat or drink for 30 minutes. You are not supposed to swallow the fluoride treatment and eating or drinking will wash it off your teeth before it can cause the reaction that hardens the enamel.

Just don’t eat or drink for 30 min afterwards. and don’t swallow it.

Edit to Add: Fluoride doesn’t make your teeth whiter, it does some sort of ion exchange with the minerals in the surface of your teeth so they can harden and resist acid and staining which over time will help your teeth look whiter. Whitening agents usually contain peroxide of some sort and you should not be swallowing those either.

I’m 42 and I don’t think I’ve ever rinsed after brushing. My mouth feels clean after. Why ruin it?

  17. uvaspina1 Avatar

I never have. Not really an issue.

  18. grumpyoldman60 Avatar

Every since I started brushing with sensitive teeth toothpaste and not rinsing my teeth sensitivity had decreased. So it does work

  19. jhewitt127 Avatar

If it means anything, my dentist says you SHOULD rinse after brushing.

  20. Friendly-Maybe-9272 Avatar

My gut reaction would be a gut ache

  21. Pantherdraws Avatar

Unless you’re sucking down like, half a bottle of toothpaste at once, you’re nowhere near approaching “toxic” levels of fluoride.

  22. thew0rldisaghett0 Avatar

I like it because i know im putting in the extra effort for my teeths. Also it makes such a big difference to my extreme tooth sensitivity that I basically would never want to stop.

  23. googingagoo Avatar

You get used to it, it was pretty gross and difficult at first now it doesn’t affect me

  24. NeslayTollooza Avatar

Yeah I grew up rinsing after brushing. It’s just how I was taught. And if I think about it, anytime I’ve ever had a dental cleaning, they always have you rinse when they’re done. I get that the toothpaste at the dentist seems different and has a grittier texture. But I’ve never known anything different until I started dating my now husband. He doesn’t rinse, his kid wasn’t taught to rinse either. And then one day I saw it posted in here about people not rinsing.

So I’m trying it. I still rinse sometimes because it’s habit but I try not to most of the time.. I use Crest Gum Detoxify toothpaste, and I don’t find that the mintiness lasts too long without rinsing. I might give it an hour of not eating or drinking anything after brushing.

  25. Ok-Bug-960 Avatar

Dunno, I was taught never to rinse. I suppose you just get used to it

  26. Reasonable_Hawk78 Avatar

I was told by dentists not to rinse as it gets rid of the something or other

  27. oryan80 Avatar

I always brush for 1 minute and then rinse, then brush for another minute and then spit a few times.

  28. Daddy_Bear29401 Avatar

Floride will not whiten your teeth. As a matter of fact too much floride can discolor teeth.

  29. imstillapenguin Avatar

I’m like this too, the taste stays w me & I hate it. Plus, I’m so used to rinsing. So what i do is brush normally, rinse, then brush again w a tiny bit of toothpaste. That’s what helped me.

  30. Ancient-Tap-3592 Avatar

You are supposed to rinse with mouthwash, preferably with no alcohol. If you are worried about Fluoride, there are some with fluoride, but most not (the ones that work for me have fluoride)

If you won’t use mouthwash with the intention of keeping fluoride on your teeth for longer, then just spitting, spit however much you feel necessary, but ideally, you spit it all before swallowing any saliva and mouthwash helps with that.

You don’t need water at all to brush your teeth. N need to wet the brush or toothpaste and no need to rinse with water. You only need water to rinse your toothbrush AFTER you brush your teeth and rinse of the toothpaste you spit out, assuming you are spitting in the sink like most people

  31. erin_burr Avatar

I’m typing this out with the taste of toothpaste still on my teeth. I think you get used to it after a while. I don’t even think about it anymore.

The tiny amount of toothpaste you will swallow is fine. It’s safe to swallow toothpaste. Astronauts do it because you can’t really have a drain without gravity.

  32. aphilosopherofsex Avatar

Scrape your tongue instead. Don’t rinse.

  33. Reinardd Avatar

I stopped rinsing LONG ago, I don’t even remember when. I started scraping my tongue after brushing a couple years ago and I can’t go without anymore. I started it because I likely had some infection on my tongue which has long since been resolved but I still scrape. I now notice after brushing that my tongue feels gross with the leftover toothpaste/saliva/gunk on it and scraping it off makes it feel so much cleaner.

  34. MelancholyBean Avatar

I only don’t rinse after brushing my teeth at night.

  35. Saya_99 Avatar

My problem is that you have to keep the toothpaste you just brushed your teeth with and i find that disgusting. I started doing something else, I rinse the toothpaste I used to brush and apply fresh toothpaste. I leave it in there for a while, then I spit the excess and get left with only whatever remains on the teeth.

It makes food/beverages gross though ngl, so what I do is I make sure that it passes about 30 min in between brushing my teeth and eating, so I can rinse my mouth before I eat (I have to wait anyways because I take euthyrox first thing in the morning and you’re not allowed to eat for about 30 min – 1 h after taking the pill).

  36. 424Impala67 Avatar

Mate, I’m just lucky to have the fucks to give to brush my teeth daily. Rinsing is another step that I don’t want to add since my bathroom sink is too small to store a glass for that. Spit twice and go on with my day.

  37. sgostlin11 Avatar

I spit, rinse the brush, then brush my gums and tongue to get rid of the taste. Works pretty well imo 🤷‍♀️

  38. LHuisingh Avatar

My dental hygienist said to not rinse.
