Not really expecting an answer besides idk but just curious on when LE decides to do this but I’ve been pulled over a couple times but last year I ran a stop sign and got hailed. Except this time the cop made me turn off my vehicle. The cop went back to the car to write my citation while the entire time his partner was swatting his flashlight in my backseat and drivers seat like he was looking for something in my car and kept trying to talk to me abt random things. This stop took forever and they finally let me go with a citation, any reason why? I was nervous the entire time as well and i think they picked up on it
Why did the cop make me turn off my vehicle?

Because if you have to start the car first, it gives them a clear indication if you’re going to try to drive away.
Here to learn, not a cop but I always assumed it’s for the obvious – so we can’t just scoot off whenever we want
So you don’t suddenly drive off
Safety and control. The backup officer job is to keep an eye on you, so the primary can focus on the ticket. Also to spot contraband or any other surprises A PERSON (not just you) may have.
As for time, look at your ticket and write down everything he wrote on that ticket and it’s not as fast as you’d think. Sure you know how to spell your name and DOB and address off memory, but the officer has to reassure what he is writing is accurate and most important, legible to the operator receiving the citation. Nervousness comes with it. It’s almost like an interview for the violation and if you got the ticket or not haha.
