Water tastes awful

r/

Water tastes horrible. And I dont want people telling me “It tastes like nothing” because thats not true. Water has been my enemy since I was a young age, I dont remember when or why I started hating it but I did and still do. Ive been twice to the hospital for dehydration (not recently thank god). I know water is essential, natural, and not drinking it would simply kill you but I just cant like it. I’ve heard lots of people that only drink water when its really cold but I dont even like that, I just dont like water. I wish I liked it, I really do but I cant force myself to just drink it. Im terrified of stone kidneys, probably gonna die early for not drinking “8 cups of water a day” and just drinking coke and juice all day. I hate water and I won’t change my mind.

Get some decaf Mio drops or the offbrand version. Or some drink mix powder. See if adding in flavor helps–even with the additives, it’s still going to have less sugar than soda or juice, and should make it less likely that you get a kidney stone or experience other health issues. There’s nothing wrong with not liking the taste of unflavored water.

  4. knuckboy Avatar

Try filtering it and/or adding flavor to it like those water drops or limes/lemons

There IS a such thing as good and bad drinking water. Filtered, chill (not cold) water is the truth. There’s certain water dispensers at work I won’t use because it doesn’t taste the same as the others lol

So water itself doesn’t have any taste it’s the mineral content that’s in it. I would say maybe try drinking different bottled waters or getting a filter, that can alter the taste more than you would imagine

For me water taste depends on the location, like water from Florida, George, and other places. I will just refuse to drink them, and buy bottled water. It gives me a stomachache!

But if you give me water from Colorado, Canada, Alaska, and other places I will drink it in a heartbeat because it taste better.

  29. Poison1990 Avatar

Sounds like sugar addiction. Quit the coke and the juice for a month and you might feel differently.

  30. MiLys09 Avatar

Two things: 1. Check the water quality where you live. If it’s bad, try getting a filter, or purchasing bottled water, because while travelling I have had some truly horrid tap water. 2. Buy a sugar-free cordial to put in your water. Shouldn’t have that much of an adverse health impact and it’s much better than alternatives like soft drink and juice

  31. AdorableBowl7863 Avatar

Like, from a toilet? Doesn’t have electrolytes.

  32. PrudentSecretary9312 Avatar

It depends on the water, and how dehydrated I am.

Regular tap water is ass tho

  33. Appropriate-Let-283 Avatar

Depends. It’s pretty much the best drink for when you’re eating snacks like chips, but just drinking water alone, it doesn’t taste great.

  34. Grary0 Avatar

What kind of water do you drink? Contrary to popular sentiment, water can taste different depending on the source. If you’ve only ever had disgusting tap water then I can understand. Even bottled water can differ by brand, DeSani tastes like you’re giving a T-1000 a blowjob, and then there’s a plethora of powders and flavorings you can add to water to make it taste like whatever you want.

  35. nikoelnutto Avatar

Ignore everyone here and just stop drinking ALL artificially sweetened drinks. Your appetite for water will grow and grow into a beautiful relationship

  36. AceFire_ Avatar

How old are you? What kind of water are we talking about also? What brands have you tried? Was it Spring water or Purified?

So much is missing here, and you can’t just classify all water as the same. That’d be the equivalent of saying all candy is the same, which is just flat out stupid and untrue.

  37. meeksquad Avatar

Are you drinking purified water? Dasani perhaps? I used to hate water because Dasani was the only water in my area and it tasted like metal. When I moved and tried spring water, I liked it. Had a slightly sweet taste to it. You should try it, if only for health reasons because soda and juice are terrible for you in the long run.

  38. su1cidal_fox Avatar

You probably live in a part of the world where the water quality is shit and therefore has a bad taste. Water is not everywhere perfect. I’m fortunate to live in a country having one of the best water quality in the world and I can still recall different taste of tap water drinking it from different places.

  41. Bigbadbrindledog Avatar

I agree with you in every way. I’ve hated water my entire life and always been told I was wrong.

I drink a lot of water with the squirt bottle flavor because I just can’t stand plain water.

  42. geekygirl25 Avatar

I don’t like water either, but I’ve gotten used to it. I’m on meds that make me thirsty, to the point water is literally the only thing that will quench my thirst sometimes. A mouthful of water will quench my thirst better than a glass of pop. Still don’t like the taste tho. For me, that’s where mio comes in. It at least makes the water palatable.

That said, water absolutely does taste like something. I couldn’t tell you what, but it’s defiantly something and it ain’t good.

  43. LongHairedKnight Avatar

Water can taste awful depending on its mineral content. Aquafina for example is awful. I prefer tap water to most bottled water, though the tap water in some locations can taste gross. Have you tried Fiji bottled water? It’s the best tasting water in my opinion.

  44. Empty-Scale4971 Avatar

Upvote because this opinion is mind-blowing. I wonder what’s going on with your body to make water taste bad to you. I love me some water, it’s affordable and goes down smooth.

Edit: And it doesn’t wreck my teeth

Holy shit I never thought I’d meet another one, my wife hates water with a passion. She drinks it begrudgingly, and complains about the taste. I installed a $300 reverse osmosis filtration system to make it just bearable for her. I think she’s crazy.

  50. ImperialDefector Avatar

The town I grew up in had horrible water because of corporate contamination, but I moved a good 20 minutes away and now my sink water tastes much better.

I’d still take just about anything else over it though, which is why I always drink Prime or Powerade.

  51. leftJordanbehind Avatar

I wasn’t raised drinking water so I was never able to get used to it. I did time a long time ago, and in there water is really all you get unless you spend Alot on commissary for a warm coke or tea bags or gross Koolaid stuff. I drank it then because I had to. It was always room temp water too. Not good water.

Now though, I drink a ton of water. Had a doctor tell me 15-20 years ago just to do get drink mixes. Sugar free drink mixes. So now I buy bottled water. I add mix to the bottle and shake it up. I refill it a few times and add mix and stuff them throw out the bottle for a new one. If I had no choice but to drink water, I know I can do it because I did it for years that time before.

Water does not taste like nothing, I agree with you there. For me, I had to learn a way to drink water that was still halfway healthy. Thank goodness for drink mix packets lol

  59. iwillsumday Avatar

You should try a variety of waters and find out what you like.

Look for bottles that describe the mineral content or TDS (totally dissolved solids) in the water.

When water hits that sweet spot, it feels life-giving and tastes delicious

  60. todaythruwaway Avatar

I used to HATE water. Spent a solid 25 years without drinking water, even as a kid i hated it and idk it just made me feel sick after drinking it.

Now I live where there’s well water… woah! What a change! I drink a solid 80oz a day now. It definitely tastes different/better than city water. If I can’t get my own well water, I prefer any of the alkaline PH waters.

  61. imgotugoin Avatar

Live in the city or have city water?

  62. brinazee Avatar

Water definitely doesn’t taste like nothing. It tastes different in every municipality because it gets its flavor from dissolved minerals from the source plus chemical from water treatment. I like water from my own area, but drink it rarely elsewhere.

Bottled water is filtered water with minerals added back in. Those mineral concentrations are tested to figure out the taste the consumer likes the most and why so many people are brand-loyal to certain bottled water brands.

If you like and can tolerate milk, moderate consumption of that helps a lot with dehydration.

  63. slidinsafely Avatar

is this reddit day at the asylum?

  64. _H017 Avatar

I disagree. I love the taste of water.

But water does have a taste, and it would be ridiculous to say otherwise. Whether you like that taste is a matter of personal preference.

Could also be that water in your region sucks. Bottled water from the same brand can taste different in different regions depending on the source. Maybe try to get some better water?

  65. YourVentiMain Avatar

Agree! Water taste super funny and it’s unbearable when it’s not cold. I drink it so i don’t die but I rather drink a juice or something

  66. Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx Avatar

I struggle with water a lot as well. It’s easier as an adult, but as a child I hardly ever drank water plain. It’s easier to drink when it’s cold, and using a filter really helps.

  67. Tasty-Caterpillar801 Avatar

I think different water taste different. I don’t know what makes it different. Maybe the minerals or whatever I know everybody hates Dasani but that’s my favourite tasting water in a bottle. It’s like sweet. I can’t explain it, but I think it’s so good especially when cold.!

  68. Crunchy__Frog Avatar

Different water has different minerals that will affect the taste. Just have to figure out your brand.

I hate water. Hate it. Hate hate hate. It’s usually thick and it coats my tongue. Even if I could find a water I would drink, I’ve found that no two glasses or bottles of water taste the same anyway.

I get this. With that said, eh, don’t listen to the purists. If you have to put flavor in it, do it. It’s better than dehydration

  73. WatchStoredInAss Avatar

Your parents failed you when they allowed you to drink soda.

  74. Xevancia Avatar

    They say:

It’s not the water.. It’s your breath that makes it “taste gross”.

Apparently, water takes on the taste of the person’s overgrowth of bacteria in their mouth. And if water tastes nasty to you, then that’s your stank bacteria that you can actually taste. 🤣

  75. ____SPIDERWOMAN____ Avatar

You can change how you experience the taste of water. I used to be a soda addict, and only drinking extremely flavored liquids changes how you taste plain water. If you just force yourself to drink only water, you will grow used to it within a week. Over time, I’ve even began to notice a slightly sweet taste to just plain water! It’s tough, just as breaking any addiction is, but you are capable of doing tough things!

  76. LogieBear121 Avatar

  85. thehufflepuffstoner Avatar

I used to not like water because I was accustomed to drinks with a lot of flavor and/or sugar. When I was growing up, water was just a before-bed drink to quench your thirst when it was too late to have coca-cola.

Then in my late teens I went on a medication that required me to drink a ton of water, or else it could damage my kidneys. I lost my taste for sugary drinks entirely (not to mention all the weight I inadvertently lost from cutting out sugary drinks). I almost exclusively drink water now.

Maybe you could try flavored electrolyte drops or tablets for your water? You gotta keep yourself hydrated!

To be fair I have difficulty drinking the recommended amount of water daily because I find water to be boring (unless it’s a hot summer day and the water is very cold and filtered). Some water has tasted nasty, especially some bottled water like Dasani or tap water that hasn’t been filtered.

Also as others have pointed out, do you brush your teeth often or have had them checked for cavities/disease? That would be altering how water tastes to you

  109. wow_yuri Avatar

there a lot of stuff that you wont like about life. if you think water is bad, youre gonna love losing a foot.

the first two weeks are the hardest part of breaking an addiction. It gets easier soon after that; youll see dividends, feel better, be happier, and feel fewer and fewer cravings.

  118. Shadowdragon409 Avatar

Water will taste differently and have different chemical reactions based on your region. It’s entirely dependent on what is transporting the water, where the water is sourced from, and how it’s treated.

You might live in an area with poor tap water. Get a filter.

Also, the 8 cups a day is a myth. Drink water when you are thirsty. That’s all you have to do. Humans absorb quite a bit of water from the foods they eat.

  119. ConnieTheTomcat Avatar

Have you considered cold tea or other ways to add flavor to water without relying on soda? Personally, I have a big jug of unsweetend low caffeine tea in the fridge that I drink everyday. There’s plenty of types of tea out there, too. Also, do you dislike the taste of all water (tap water, filtered tap water, different mineral water, deionized water, etc) or are your water sources limited? I find tap water in some cities to taste god awful.

  125. necrofi1 Avatar

It should taste like nothing but I have heard of people with conditions in their in their mouth like certain bacterial infections being able to taste the infection when they drink water because the water kind of activates their taste buds and spreads the infection around their mouth. For some people.. drinking a lot of water doesn’t prevent them from getting dehydrated.

I kinda agree. I don’t like most water. I’ve really only enjoyed/liked water from few places. When I was a kid we had well water that was amazing, and I live near where I grew up and the water is alright. Everywhere else I dont like the water. I especially hate most bottles water and city water. It’s nasty and I cannot drink it, if I do I get nauseous.
I also hate all water at room temp or hot unless it’s tea.

You’re probably fine living off of coke and juice. Probably add a tea, or something less sugary, but I know people who have never drank water and only have drank diet coke or Mt dew their whole life.

I drink enough water to know that they don’t taste all the same. Some are better than others, including the bottled water brands. But it could be a symptom of a sugar addiction which makes everything less sweet taste bland. Tea is a good alternative if you really want some flavour.

Just add some sugar-free cordial and move on with your life, damn.

Most water is nasty to me. I have found some bottled water that I like. Fiji is my favorite

Do you have bad breath? You could be tasting your mouth.

Don’t force yourself to drink when you’re not thirsty. That’s stupid. And hydrating with non-water beverages is also perfectly fine.

However, I was expecting you to say that you had tried three different brands of filter pitchers and ten brands of bottled water across three different countries. So let me tell you this: It might just be that the tap water where you’re from is gross. Try getting a gallon of spring water or filtered drinking water from the grocery store. I like the tap water where I live right now, but I will say that stuff is still quite a bit better.
