I call it gravy rice. Cup of rice and a can of chicken with a gravy packet. Use the chicken water in the can for half the gravy water when making it and then dump the chicken into the gravy to heat it up. Pour over cooked white rice

    >If I have a million dollars,
We wouldn’t have to eat Kraft Dinner
But we would eat Kraft Dinner PC Deluxe Cheddar Macaroni and Cheese
Of course we would, we’d just eat more
And buy really expensive ketchups with it
That’s right, all the fanciest-, Dijon ketchup, mm, mm

Sorry, as much as I hate Loblaws, the PC Deluxe Mac and Cheese are awesome and fast, even tif you just make it with water and creamer in an office.

  49. boxerboy96 Avatar

Kraft mac ‘n chesse with canned peas. Try it some time, that shit’s fuckin’ delicious 😋

  50. ForwardPromise1348 Avatar

Wonder Sandwich. Two slices of white bread, lightly spread mayo, and you imagine what’s in between. It’s called a wonder sandwich because you commonly used wonder bread for it, but also because you had to wonder what was between the bread in the first place haha.

  51. Zodi88 Avatar

Chicken and rice. It is such a great base for a lot of meals.

  60. TimMacPA Avatar

We were rather poor. The church would bring us food, (we had no car for several years).

Creamed anything. Eggs, salmon, chipped beef, chicken. On toast.

Somethings I still detest…canned veggies. Corn, green or yellow beans, lima beans, canned hash.

I will never eat chicken in a can again, the most disgusting thing ever.

  61. RowdyRoddyPooper Avatar

Canned pork and beans with hot dog slices mixed in (or sausage or bacon or ham, etc.).

Also, buttered noodles with fried onions and hot dog slices mixed in. And ketchup, though that was a source of bitter contention between me and my sisters when we were kids.

  62. moonflower311 Avatar

    Hot buttered noodles

Chicken livers with long grain and wild or dirty rice

  63. bigcurvesgal Avatar

Rice and beans. You can’t beat the OG struggle meal. Still better than some of the overpriced, gourmet nonsense people are out here eating.

  64. pinniped90 Avatar

I will always make room for the humble ballpark hotdog.

A couple friends, an 8-pack of dogs on the grill, yellow mustard, some Natty Lights, a bag of store brand potato chips, and a college football game on TV.

That’s peak 1993 Central Illinois entertainment right there.

  65. BlondeKicker-17 Avatar

Ground beef, white rice, and corn with a whole lot of salt and pepper.

  66. betacuck3000 Avatar

Sausages and beans from a can. The exquisite saltines, the exotic mouthfeel, the rich irreplaceable flavours.

    Chefs. Kiss.

  67. pm_me_ur_demotape Avatar

Ramen with some better bullion than the packet, throw done meat in there, drain the water off and put in a pat of butter. Mmm

  68. disenfranchisedchild Avatar

Red beans and rice. Nowadays it has more meat in it but in the poverty days it was made with broth cubes.

  69. ezekiellake Avatar

    Vegemite sandwiches.

  70. Qheeljkatt Avatar

    canned food or instant noodles

  71. SilentExtent5340 Avatar

Brown sauce butty. (sandwich to you posh people) lol

  72. EpicBlinkstrike187 Avatar

Box of pasta with a can of tomato sauce, we used mainly macaroni noodles. Cheap asf but throw some salt on it and it’s pretty good.

Still make it for lunch occasionally.

  73. bagb8709 Avatar

Poverty Nachos. They get a kick up if I have leftover beef from taco night or use a rotisserie chicken but otherwise just some tortilla chips, mexican blend cheese, a microwave and salse (and a drizzle of wing sauce) is all I need for it.

  74. feetcold_eyesred Avatar

Spouse grew up fairly poor, but is very successful as an adult. I make Hamburger Helper at least once a week for him.

I grew up poor as well, but: 1) am successful only through marriage and 2) don’t like how I feel after eating Hamburger Helper, so it’s a no for me. My struggle meal is macaroni noodles with tomato juice (not sauce) poured over them.

  75. SpiritOfYinAndYang Avatar

A bag of Mini Oreos and milk.

If your feeling fancy, top it off with some whipped cream and chocolate syrup to it.

Mix em together inside the bag, and eat up!
