Do people with very white skin look unhealthy ?

Do people think people with very white skins look unhealthy.

I’m not talking about people who have albinism just people who have hardly any melanin think Scotland very white skin that is hard to tan no olive undertones just pink.

I am one of these people and have many comments in my life like oh you’re so white, do you have enough vitamin d, you look like a ghost. Also I see comments about how someone is so white they need to get a tan.

I do go in the sun but only in the morning or evening as I’m in NZ and our sun is like if the depths of hell we’re sending light rays to burn you.

At a certain point yes. Paleness can be a sign of lack of blood flow so there might be underlying issues

  2. Plenty-Daikon1121 Avatar

Don’t worry, when you’re >40 and that skin is still smooth and healthy from avoiding the sun – they’ll change their tune.

  3. Signal-Bit-5226 Avatar

Yeah im white AF and super do…… but also?

  4. North_Mama5147 Avatar

No, you’re good. It’s just your genetics.

  5. Aqueous_Ammonia_5815 Avatar

I am (mostly) of Scottish descent and anytime I’d go to the nurses office in school, they’d say “Oh your so pale! You must be really sick” even if i wasn’t

  6. ultimate-battle Avatar

I have a very light Irish complexion with rosy checks. I avoid the sun, always. I take a vitamin d supplement and vit d is in many of the foods I eat. No one tells me I look unhealthy. Many think it’s pretty. It’s me. I was born this way. Light and pink🙂
Don’t we all know burning our skin is terrible and can cause skin cancer?
You are beautiful the way you are, embrace your family history.

  7. Fringe-Farmer Avatar

    White yeah, pale no.

  8. anditurnedaround Avatar

Unless your vitamin d levels are low, I wouldn’t worry about it. You only need about 15 min of sun a day. You don’t need a tan.

No, being pale from not being sun kissed won’t make you look sick. I can think of famous people that are pale and think they look healthy. Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, Olivia Newton-John.

Maybe you’re a man, Jude law.. but I’m not bringing to mind many pale men off the top of my head, but I can picture their faces.

However… being anemic ( either in iron or b12) can make you look sick.

It’s a different kind of pale.

I used to get comments like that all the time, and thought it was just my natural skin color worrying people. Then I had a lifestyle change (switching from public school to homeschool) that drastically lowered my stress levels, and my parents commented that I was looking less pale. I’m still NW European ancestry, burn rather than tan pale, but I no longer look pale enough to worry people. So it could be a sign you’re under too much stress, OP.

Well, for example, I have such a feature that I have very severe bruises under my eyes, and it seems to everyone that I didn’t get enough sleep or didn’t take care of myself. But that’s not the case, until one moment it really annoyed me, but now I’ve accepted my appearance and considered that the main thing is what’s inside me and how I feel, and I don’t even pay attention to my appearance. When I was very thin two years ago, there were rumors in my small town that I was a drug addict, but in my 17 years I have never drunk alcohol or smoked.

  11. AnxiousChai Avatar

I like to think a lot of this is because a lot of old-timey diseases like tuberculosis used to make you quite pale. It’s just disease chic

  12. IWasBorn2DoGoBe Avatar

It’s the lack of pink- on any complexion- that makes people look sick.

A pale black person without the pink (blood) is going to look sick, just as much a pale white person without the pink

in the west some ppl get bullied for being too white even tho that’s their natural skin color. I’ve also lived in Asian countries where ppl get bullied for being too brown

  14. Jen0BIous Avatar

I don’t think so, but I’m partial to red heads and they tend to be quite pale

  15. NoTeaNoWin Avatar

    No, I love whites

  16. coldtasting Avatar

I’m paper white, I don’t think I look unwell, but people always tell me I should get some sun or try to coach me on how to tan, but I literally don’t tan. I don’t really burn either, I’m just pale.!

  17. Plumb789 Avatar

My legs look a kind of pale blue/grey colour. Not healthy looking at all.

  18. gothiclg Avatar

You can definitely take it too far. I’ve seen people just like me who are into the gothic aesthetic that go way too far with the whole “I’m not allowed to get a tan” thing.

  19. TheSerialHobbyist Avatar

    Some people do.

As a very pale dude, I’ve known a lot of people who were comfortable telling me so.

  20. Artz-RbB Avatar

I’m so pale I’m transparent. I’ve had problems with blood values before – very low iron , low VitD, low B12. All my levels are normal right now. I have them checked twice yearly sometimes more. But I’m still pale. I feel discriminated against sometimes because people assume things about me. But also very few makeup companies cater to such paleness. At least my husband is still attracted to me after all these years. When stockings were the thing you always had to wear, it was impossible to find my color.

  21. Ok-Somewhere911 Avatar

I’m Welsh so I only get to see the sun about once a year, I’m so pale I glow in the dark, my nickname at work is Casper. I’ve never been asked by anyone in the UK if I’m ill, but when I’ve gone abroad where pale skin is more unusual it has come up. Someone thought I was dying once lmao

I have had people tell me I need to get a tan to look healthier (nothing healthier than a radiation burn amirite?!) with zero understanding that my skin just doesn’t tan and nor do I want it to. Factor 50 12/7/365 baby.

  22. Corvus-V Avatar

I dont think so. Skin is just colors. Unless there’s an underlying health reason that’s a cause for concern, like jaundice, then people who are pale can still be attractive. There’s just also health things that can cause people to be very pale when they might otherwise not be. Im not sure which is more concerning to you based on your other replies.

A lot of people think I dont sleep because of the way my eyes look, so I can kind of relate; but they never really say it outright to me.

  23. YoungOaks Avatar

If I wear the wrong colors, I look really ill. Like everyone checking to make sure I’m ok, bad. Also when I’m cold I turn purple, which looks more concerning than it is.

  24. LawfulnessMajor3517 Avatar

Probably depends on how familiar you are with paler tones. Somebody you know that’s paler than normal for them is going to look sick cause it’s a sign of sickness. If you’re talking stranger then they might look sick just cause you’re just more familiar with paleness from that aspect. I don’t always assume sick if I see a pale stranger. If they’re a redhead I automatically assume it’s their natural tone and if not then just depends on their overall appearance I guess. No matter what I think they look like internally, I would not comment on the appearance of any stranger when it comes to skin tone or anything else for that matter. Cause why should they care what I think about the color of their skin and whether they’re sick or not? I’m nobody to them. And nobody needs a tan. Tanning was super popular when I was a teen in the 90s/early 2000s, and there was so much pressure to be golden for some reason. Glad I never got into that though. There’s nothing wrong with anybody’s skin tone and no need to change it.

  25. humbugonastick Avatar

Only when the skin tone goes into bluish. Like Musk. He looks so disgusting with shirt off. I mean, he is disgusting with shirt on, but he most definitely looks disgusting with shirt off

  26. Emergency_Cherry_914 Avatar

The only people I know who say that tanned looks more healthy are relics who grew up in the 70’s.

  27. Journo_Jimbo Avatar

pale New England boobs have entered the chat

  28. Westsidepipeway Avatar

I’m super pale and I find I look overly pale if I don’t pencil in my eyebrows. However, that may be the blonde and pale thing looking like I don’t have any facial hair (female). I don’t think I look unwell though.

  29. immasayyes Avatar

I think the big difference is pale vs white. Pale is associated with illness. Sometimes people mix that up but even the whitest people get pale when they are sick, it’s a big difference in my opinion. I don’t agree with it but i think that’s what happens when people say this

  30. dependswho Avatar

What colors are you wearing? If I wear black or dead white, even health professionals get alarmed.

If I wear “my” colors, I get compliments.

  31. Green-Eggs-and-Clam Avatar

I don’t think it’s pale complexion alone. Things like eye bags from lack of sleep might be a contributor as well; they might be more noticeable in someone with very pale skin. If you have some pink in your cheeks you tend to look healthier.

  32. hardesttree Avatar

maybe less unhealthy but at a certain point its concerning? especially in asian culture

if you’re obsessed with looking pale rather than just taking normal precautions (sunscreen, etc.)

  33. catsby1970 Avatar

I am pale. When I go into the sun without protection, I burn and look like a lobster. My legs are so white they might as well glow in the dark. What other people think I look like is their business, not mine. I know I am healthy, my doctor knows I am healthy and that is all that matters to me. I am 54 and have no wrinkles yet, which is both genetic and also due to the fact that I never sunbathed and always wore SPF/hats and have been a skincare fiend for decades.

I could not care less what other people think I look like. If friends are genuinely concerned, of course that is different, but I don’t care what the random person in the grocery store or at Sephora might think I look like.

  34. mothwhimsy Avatar

I think it really depends on the person. Some people just look very pale, others look ill. It depends on undertone and other factors like your clothes or hair color washing you out. Two people could be equally pale but one looks fine and the other looks gray

  35. raccoonhippopotamus Avatar

Commenting on people’s skin tone is so rude. Are you female? Do you wear makeup? I ask because I think people often get very used to seeing women in makeup and forget what our normal skin looks like, especially when we are naturally pale. Sometimes if I don’t wear makeup someone at work will be like “are you feeling ok?” when I’m fine, they’re just used to seeing me with blush.

  36. femsci-nerd Avatar

    Because of your personal bias.

  37. tracyvu89 Avatar

Depends. If you’re naturally pale and healthy then nothing is wrong with that. But sometimes pale skin with some health issues like: anemia, heart failure, cancer, autoimmune disorders,…would make you look sick. Also different places/people have different beauty standard about pale/tan skin. In Asia, people like pale skin in general while North America, people like tan skin.

  38. Superb_Letterhead_33 Avatar

As a pasty blob fish I can confirm I do indeed look ill when I’m not fake tanned. Whenever I have gone into work without any fake tan on I’ll have multiple people ask me if I’m feeling okay when they see me. I have to explain that I’m fine, just a deep sea toned bitch 🙃

  39. No_Salad_8766 Avatar

I’m pale. Irish and German decent, blonde hair, blue eyes. I’ve never been told I look unhealthy. I’ve actually been complemented on how smooth my skin looks several times.

  40. Ambitious_Hold_5435 Avatar

Not necessarily. My sister has very white skin, like an Irish person (we’re part Irish). I have yellowish skin, a lot darker than hers but kind of sickly-looking. I’m not sickly, I just look like it.

  41. thismightendme Avatar

No one has ever come up to me and told me I look sick or talked directly about my skin tone. One time about 30 years ago, a person looked at me and said ‘wow – your complexion!!’ I guess some of my friends have said stuff about ‘my complexion’ but not bad.

I just asked my boyfriend if I was in fact pale, because I really don’t hear much and don’t see it myself, he said I’m the palest person he’s ever met.

I’m a deep winter (color analysis), so I do make sure I’m wearing complementary colors for myself just because I think pictures look a little better.

My wife is British and just doesn’t tan.

And has pretty good skin. She looks like a Brit.
