If your pet throws up, dump a thick layer of baking soda on it right away. It neutralizes odor, absorbs moisture, and makes cleanup way less unpleasant. Let it dry, then sweep it up (or use a carpet cleaner if needed). Baking soda is cheap and lasts forever, so keep a few extra boxes around the house.
It’s just as effective for other messes you might run into as well.

I’ve had my kids leave some nasty vomit piles that this would work so much better.
Animals INSIDE the HOUSE??????
SO UNSANITARY.
For my fellow dog owners who know the yellow bile throw up from eating grass for whatever reason… Folex is a miracle worker on cloth. I’ve removed months old stains in like 10 minutes with it, and it takes very little work.
Any good for the other end?
Just a quick note. If odor remains after cleaning your pets bio mess, that means there’s still bio material there. My best luck has always been Nature’s Miracle Pet Enzyme Cleaner.
Puppy had a night time emergency and pooped on the carpet. After fully cleaning everything (scrubbing and wet vac), allowed the enzyme cleaner to soak overnight. One more crossing with the wet vac and good as new. The enzyme cleaner actually digests the remaining material, my best recommendation. Much harder to remove all the baking soda from certain surfaces, i.e. carpets/cushions. B
wow did not know that! My eldest does have stomach problems and does vomit more often than most. Thanks for this!
I find clumping kitty litter works very well too!
Definitely going to try this! Thanks!
My friend does oil changes at my house once a year. He ALWAYS spills some oil even with a huge catch pan. Baking soda cleans up the oil from my garage floor nicely.
great tip! It’s definitely a lifesaver for messes.
I know it’s not an option for everyone, but for pet/child owners I’d highly recommend getting a SpotBot – one of the ones with the rotating brush that scrubs for you. Saved me so much unpleasantness in scrubbing cat puke out of the carpet over the years, and I just wish I had got it sooner.
Cleaning 101! Also works with blood/wine stains.
Just don’t do it on leather, aluminum/silver among other things. Learnt that the hard way.
Omg yes!! Baking soda has saved my life so many times 😭 I always keep a box under the sink just in case—works like magic and doesn’t leave that gross smell behind. Total must-have if you’ve got pets
Baking soda is also great for getting stains out of white stone/quartz countertops!
What if my cat throws up on the wooden floors
When my cat yacked up a hairball masterpiece, I sprinkled that white powder like CSI: Furry Edition. 20 minutes later, it turned into a crispy science fair volcano ready to sweep away.
baking soda has so many uses, it is worth it to keep some on hand for many reasons.
