I’m a convicted felon & apparently can’t work anywhere

r/

I caught a federal drug charge in 2021 it went through fully in 2022. I’m a 24 single mom looking to be a productive member of society but because of this charge no one wants to hire me. I paid my debt to society & have nothing else on my record but this one thing continues to break me down. I feel helpless & like a failure. What do they expect me to do go back & sell to make a damn living. (I wouldn’t but I’m tired). Every job I apply for calls me back but once they mention a background check I’m honest & the conversation is over. It’s not like I can lie about it. Whatever’s in the dark always comes to light.

If you’re american perhaps you could run for office?

Do you have the means to see if your record can be expunged? If not, look into nonprofits.

Hope all works out for you and your child.

Try the GoodWill in your area, they hired me and I’m a manager now. I had similar circumstances myself.

Kudos for telling them the truth. Google “Felony Friendly Companies” and a list will come up, apply to those. United States Probation Office website also has a list. “Stop looking for oranges in a hardware store”

The restaurant business tends to hire people with felony charges.

if you are clean and sober, you could look into working in detox/residential treatment facilities. many of my coworkers have criminal histories from drug charges. They built strong relationships and support for our clients who have gone through the same thing as they can relate to them. look into AOD counseling too. I am not an AOD counselor, but a Registered Drug and Alcohol Technician.

Not sure what kind of skills you have but any possibility you can start a small business? You can also look into being a real estate agent or insurance salesperson as those are more independent jobs.

I’m in the same boat myself. I started selling stuff on eBay to make a little bit of money but it isn’t enough currently. It’s a struggle for sure but the most important thing right not getting in trouble again. I want to start customizing clothes in different ways but building up a customer base is a struggle

Hi…I’ve been exploring getting into the business of helping people with reentry after incarceration and I’ve learned a few things. If you want to brainstorm some ideas, send me a chat request.

I’m sorry you’re having a hard time. You’re right : you served your time you should be given a fair chance.

There are several ‘felon’ subreddits that might be able to give you advice and point you to help. (watch out for scammers – they’re everywhere, especially where people need help)

  14. BTP_Art Avatar

I work in call centers. I have employees with convictions and I’ve worked for a director that had one. Best I can tell you is just keep applying, be honest, and take what you can while you shop around for something else that will accept your past.

I am a felon and have a great career. I work in a construction union. There are many options. Look into other unions in your area. Construction is looking to hire women right now too. It’s hard work but it’s a good living. I know your struggle don’t give up.

The stigma of a permanent record like that is brutal and I really feel for you. I get companies wanting to make sure they hire good people but one setback like you describe makes it REALLY hard to walk the right path and invites recidivism. I truly hope you find something and get a chance to start over!

  17. chuckaholic Avatar

The US prison industrial complex is made this way on purpose. Once you get out, they make it near impossible to live any sort of life so that you are forced to do crime just to get by. Then they pick you up on that crime and the process repeats. Most states have a for-profit prison system and the companies that run the prisons donate millions of dollars to politicians in order to keep the laws fine tuned to maximize recidivism. The jails stay full of prisoners and the companies profit. I don’t know if this is common knowledge, but it should be. It’s the most inhumane system I’ve ever witnessed outside of war profiteering.

My boyfriend has 2 convictions for armed robbery and did 10 years in prison and he was able to find jobs and now makes 6 figures in management. Try factories and warehouses for now and utilize temp agencies.

I work at a women’s drug and alcohol rehab center and multiple of my coworkers have drug charges and/or were addicts. Some went through the very same program they now work for. Maybe that is an option?

  24. chi1jcj Avatar

I just hired a felon a year ago. He started working for me as a contractor. Industrial contractors absolutely hire felons. He was such a hard worker I talked with my HR department and asked if we could hire him on permanently. They said as long as it was a non-violent crime it was no problem. I hired him on full time and he is the best worker I have.

  25. RelativeRain35 Avatar

You are apparently still eligible to run for president though, so someone please make that make sense somehow.

  26. Tight_Ad_2724 Avatar

I’m really sorry to hear the situation that you are in, a family member of mine got hired by flagger force in 2020 right out of prison starting at $16/hr and is slowly making his way up the ranks.

  27. Wide-Pick3800 Avatar

Convicted felon making literally triple what I was before I spent all of 2022 incarcerated in county. All I can say is make yourself more attractive to employers and don’t give up. (Full disclosure, I am college educated and got involved with the legal system much later in life, so I already had 10+ years experience and a decent network of contacts throughout my industry.) I am in a niche industry and my credentials and experience get my foot in the door at a lot of places but I’ve failed a lot of background checks.

It took a while but the company I’m with now did more of a consumer background check, I believe. They seemed more concerned if you had any liens or child support or alimony or stuff like that which could come out of your wages rather than a hard criminal record inquiry (CORI).

They did ask specific question on the application and I did give specific answers outing myself but it never came up again. They asked about the gap in my resume in a panel interview and I straight faced, “I had to exit the workforce due to personal reasons,” to a room of hard ass dudes I had never met before. I was on parole and probation for two years on an ankle monitor the entire time at a job where I am in a locker room in front of coworkers so they all knew obviously but I don’t even know if management knows. They never acknowledge it or mentioned any contact with PO. My POs only asked for their names and numbers and pay stubs, never mentioned calling them.

Never lie if they ask you directly but you have the right to tell your story however you want. Drug charges sounds like sales experience to me. If I could use an unrelated bachelors degree in business as 4 years of experience for an engineering job, you can throw some sales or customer service experience on your resume for sure. Some places are cheap, too. Running background checks is expensive. Times is tough. Corners are cut.

One other thing: background check only goes back 7 years in my state, not sure if that’s a national thing yet. It’s not forever.

  28. GoodLadyWife16 Avatar

Try an employment agency. They know where felons can work. I know a felon who is still in work release prison and the agency had a job for him within a week making $22 an hour with tons of overtime.

Felon here. My felony is over 10 years old now. I just found a job and started taking it seriously and slowly got promotion after promotion. I now make 75k with good benefits and a solid christmas bonus. 2 beautiful daughters and a wife of 15 years that stuck through it all.

Wasn’t easy not gonna lie. I was mad at the world when I was released. But after having my 1st daughter I knew I needed to change. If not I’d be a failure like my father and that wasn’t going to happen.

Find a warehouse job. Gain experience/knowledge. Learn how to operate a forklift. You are about the age I was released. And that’s the route I went and im now a supervisor. Lock in anywhere tbh and show them you’re dependable. It’ll all work out in the end.

Honestly insane you can’t get a job and the freaking president is a 34 time felon. I second looking up places that hire felons.

You might try looking at off shift assembly jobs, I work third shift at a factory and know a lot of people that work there with felony records. I know it’ll be hard with a kid but people here make it work somehow

  37. Herc_onna_perc Avatar

Taco Bell hired me same day no questions asked. I got several drug charges as well as aggravated assult with a deadly weapon. Waffle House would not hire me. That was very suprising. The job is shit. But it is a job. Been working the night shift to keep me out of trouble. It helps.

  38. onlyhereforthelmaos Avatar

Just going to put this out there. My brother spent 9+ years in Federal prison for CP charges. He applied to a temp agency, got placed, and has had a full time job at various distribution centers throughout the 10+ years he’s been out.

I’m not proud of what he did, but I’m proud of what he has become.

  39. fifthgroupholidash Avatar

Someone dear to me was in this situation, and now they make more money than I do with a clean record and masters degree. Get into trades. They don’t background check. Electrician, HVAC, plumber, etc. Be a good worker, be respectful, and take initiative to climb the ladder. Yes, they’re male-dominated fields. But you can do anything a male can do. And if it’s too physical, see about being their phones and scheduler person. Don’t give up.

  40. Mamba_Lev Avatar

I hear the White House is hiring if your a bit rapey.

  41. SquigSquag Avatar

I’m sorry you’re having a hard time. There are programs for higher paying IT positions but if you need something immediately, try Texas Roadhouse, they hire felons and have a great program. But have you thought of running for president?

  52. PhilpseyForce Avatar

Many companies don’t actually pay for the background check and do go through with it. You don’t have to lie, but you don’t have to tell.  Passive ‘not that I can think of’ takes you a long way.

  53. Adventurous-Tie-7861 Avatar

8 years and they won’t care anymore. I know it’s a long time but if you can make it that long it won’t pop on back ground checks.

  54. silverbatwing Avatar

You could always try for POTUS.

  55. verdenvidia Avatar

Wendy’s hires felons. It’s not good work. It’s not good pay. But it’s there.

I work in a warehouse. Depending on the company they’ll look the other way because manual labor is usually short-staffed. Worth a try.

Good luck. We are not our past. Remember that and eventually others will, too.

  56. Oneup23 Avatar

  57. lusirfer702 Avatar

This is BS, if a 34 time felon can become president then every job should allow felons to work.

You have to become a small business owner. If others won’t hire you there is one person that would – YOU! There are tons of things you can do. You can be a house cleaner, you could be maid, you could sell shit on eBay and Amazon. If there are janitorial companies in the area – they hire ex convicts all the time. If you are trying to get into white collar jobs you may have to wait a while but as far as blue collar work goes – you can do it.

  66. Your_Girl9090 Avatar

I run a business and have hired several people with felony records. As long as it’s a non violent felony I really don’t care about it. I look at the person, not their past. I give everyone a chance.

  67. DeathMetalVeganPasta Avatar

I’m in law enforcement and decidedly pro law and order but once a person has done their time, we should as a society do everything in our power to make sure that person can move on with their life and that includes gainful employment.
