Amusement parks are a hyped scam, not fun and a terrible way to spend the day

r/

Amusement parks are a scam, you see advertisement of happy people, riding and having fun.

You just spend the entire time in a queue, bored and walking around under the sun. On top, everything is overpriced.

I feel like this is more a preference thing than an opinion thing. Not every person is going to enjoy every thing and that’s okay. That’s being human. Doesn’t mean that no one will like that thing or that the people who do like that thing are wrong. For example, I think attending sports games is an overhyped scam. Entry is overpriced, the food is overpriced, people are often rude and spill beer on strangers, and I find it boring to just sit there and watch. But I respect that lots of other people feel differently and enjoy going. Hence, me not liking them is a personal preference. You not liking amusement parks is your personal preference.

In a way, it has parallels to the pain of giving birth. For some reason, many women seem to forget the intensity of the pain and just remember the joy of having a baby. With amusement parks, the thrills somehow seem to blur the memories of standing in line for hours, the unappealing fellow guests, and the overpriced everything.

Anyone who makes subsequent visits to an amusement park has forgotten the pain. Good for them. The more people waste on amusement parks, the better it is for the stockholders.

I cannot stand waiting in line (pun intended). Especially during busy periods, you could wait more than 2 hours for a single ride.

I always get the fast/express pass. Yeah, it’s more expensive, but you get your moneys worth imo.

  12. First_Code_404 Avatar

Amusement parks used to be fun, then they all got crowded.

  13. CoffeeGoblynn Avatar

I disagree somewhat, even though I’m afraid of heights and don’t like rollercoasters. Every time I’ve gone to an amusement park, I end up just buying food and drinks and walking around, maybe doing bumper-carts or something and sharing in other peoples’ joy. Still, people have a lot of fun and that’s not something I can take away from them. 🙂

  14. Lumpy_Hope2492 Avatar

I completely agree, complete hell. Should I downvote? Jk.

  15. turtlesaregorgeous Avatar

stop going to the most popular parks on their heaviest days🤷‍♀️ we planned our waterpark days on weekdays and during school hours just so it could actually be enjoyed. places like 6 flags/disneyland/great wolf are just shit options because everyone goes there

  16. TS1664 Avatar

I dont agree, rides are the most fun part. maybe you are doing it wrong!

  17. Jellylegs_19 Avatar

The trick is to buy the fast pass. I don’t go to one without it. Funnest experience of my life.

  18. Sockular Avatar

You have to go off-season. If you go in the school holidays you’re going to have a shit time.

  19. Averagebaddad Avatar

Walking around in the sun with friends is a good time. People watching with friends is a good time. Add rides and it’s all of a sudden not a good time? I don’t think so. You might just be bad at having a good time.

  20. Appa-LATCH-uh Avatar

lmao I love going to amusement parks. I have an annual pass to Busch Gardens Williamsburg and take my son all the time. I think OP just needs to be constantly stimulated or something lol

  21. Prior_Ad_7706 Avatar

Normally I would disagree, but I gained a lot of weight and can’t fit on a lot of rides anymore. That was the only saving grace for amusement parks. The food and drinks are genuinely outrageous.

  22. ssmit102 Avatar

I agree that amusement parks aren’t the best now but growing up in the 90s it was so different. I remember summers in the late 90s going to Carowinds once or twice a week and if you go during the middle of the week there were almost no lines. So many rides that we would get off and run back to, some immediately getting back on if it was early enough, but never waiting more than 10-15 minutes for the really popular coasters.

At this stage I suspect it’s too expensive to maintain amusement parks while maintaining short lines at the same time. They likely need the ticket revenue to stay afloat which can lead to a degraded customer experience when you have that many people inside the park waiting on sides – but at the same time I don’t see many wanting to spent hundreds of dollars for entry for a single person to limit the lines. The hey day of amusement parks is likely begin us, but damn if they weren’t fun.

  23. JustForTheMemes420 Avatar

You get to do stuff you don’t normally get to do and get your adrenaline pumping on rides it’s a great time. Also the ambience is fun

  24. bigsillygiant Avatar

I dislike theme park rides, but my wife, and especially my kid, loves them, so whilst I dislike theme park rides, thisnis definitely unpopular as I get to spend time with my family and also time to myself when they’re queueing up for the rides, so it’s a win win, I’d suggest going more often if they brought the tickets back for just entry to the park itself

  25. Snipeshot_Games Avatar

lemme guess… you took your kids to an amusement part and because you “can’t handle” roller coasters, you just sat in queues waiting for your kids to fish riding.

  26. WatchStoredInAss Avatar

I agree. It’s entertainment for the low-iq masses.

  27. conceited_ocelot Avatar

Do you just forget to get on the actual ride after waiting in the queue??

Or are you deliberately overgeneralizing the entire experience like most people on this sub?

I will concur that waiting in line in the hot sun does suck (esp in Florida), and yeah the food and souvenirs are grossly overpriced, to the point I always pack food and order gifts on amazon. But calling it a scam is just dishonest. I see that “scam” is one of those words that get overused into oblivion.

I loved everything about amusement parks when I was younger but that was a while ago.

One thing I still genuinely enjoy as a 50-something old guy if it’s a hot day is a well run water park. Some are better than others.

I’m up voting for this truly being an unpopular opinion. Me and my gf went to Universal in Orlando this past winter and had a blast. Velocicoaster and Hadgrid motorbike and the Hulk blew my mind. I dying to try out Epic Universe when it opens.

  32. billsjets Avatar

This is exactly how I feel about beaches.

    Disagree, upvote.

  33. Unlikely_Necessary31 Avatar

The last time we went to Cedar Point was the last time we’re going to Cedar Point. The wait time for the biggest coaster, Top Thrill Dragster, was 2 hours. The time we went before that, we waited in line…and it broke down. Concession prices are abominable. And the whole “pay $75 more per ticket to skip the line” is massively unfair. Sure, you wanna go on a couple coasters and the Tilt-a-Whirl? And spend $100 for the privilege? Go for it.

  34. MidnightHeavy3214 Avatar

Last year I took my son to six flags and had a terrible experience. Six lanes for entry but 2 were open and the line was to the street. We got in and people are speeding past triggering my son’s anxiety.

Finally got to the front entrance and another line in the sun. Except it took us another 45 mins to get in. Once we did my son noticed immediately every ride had a crazy long line. We sucked it up and waited… for everything to fail. He wanted to go down the tandem tube. After 45 mins he had to pee so we lost our spot. Yet when we returned to get back in the line we found our exact spot and the couple let us back in line.

After another 15 he got tired of waiting and we went on a different slide. Idk why but they one we were able to do a few times.

Want to sit down nope not enough tables and chairs/ even less umbrellas and the bees and flys were triggering all the children. All together we spent over 100 UsD and most of it was waiting for broken slides.

The slide itself I later learned was a bad design from years ago and was never revamps or updated so people kept getting stuck at the start then restarting. It really killed the fun vibe for everyone involved. Even the workers too

I think some parks are fantastic. But six flags in general is the corpo of amusement parks and is the worst to go to.

  35. leredditautiste Avatar

I disagree completely. Take my upvote.

  36. Butt_bird Avatar

Last time I checked amusement parks are not mandatory.

I feel the same about cruises, so I don’t go on cruises.

  37. Tommyblockhead20 Avatar

I wouldn’t go as far as to say they are a scam, but it’s always wild to me how much people will pay so much (between ticket, food, transportation, and sometimes hotels) to spend like 6-10 hours waiting in lines for less than an hour of fun. And not really for a good reason either. Parks could totally set up a virtual queueing system (kinda like Disney used to have) to allow people to enjoy other parts of the park without having to just stand around in line.

  38. Creepy_Cupcake3705 Avatar

To me it’s a personality thing. You either like being in a large group or don’t. And the lines are fun nowadays at the cool parks, the velocicoaster has cool effects while you’re waiting.

  39. Confident-Pepper-562 Avatar

    Maybe you are not fun

dude bravo, for once a non rage baiting but honest unpopular opinion.

  41. Ok_Sentence_5767 Avatar

This is why I pay for the fast lane everything I go…the wonders of being childless….I can’t wait to take my nephew to Disney though!

  42. MintyPastures Avatar

Sounds like you’ve never actually planned out your day and or have only gone at dumb times.

You can get into any park and ride all the rides if you choose the correct day and time. Heck if you go to DISNEY right at open you can ride the rides solo sometimes.

I’ve had to wait in a few lines of course but it’s never been more than 10 minutes for me. I know some rides get stupid wait times…but guess what? Just don’t go at that particular time.

  43. AstroWolf11 Avatar

When I worked as a hotel manager at Disney World, I encountered the hands-down MOST miserable people I’ve ever seen in my life on a regular, almost daily, basis. They were not having a magical time, to say the least.
