Definition:’optimistic or positive, especially in an apparently bad or difficult situation’.
I know that, but I always have to consider it for a split second when I encounter this word. Sanguine. It sounds like it should mean gloomy or pessimistic about something.

It makes me think of blood, so yeah, that definition feels off to me too.
I literally looked it up yesterday because I thought it involved blood!
“Fun fact. Also means bloody.”
It makes me think of melancholy
isnt sanguine latin for bloody? like in portuguese blood is literally “sangue”
Honestly it sounds like some kind of food to me. Maybe something fish related. I can picture it on a menu in a high-class restaurant
Sanguine like a langoustine in a pot, I am not.
Makes me think of sanguinet from shoresy, and hes usually pretty optimistic and positive…
Oddly it makes me think of lying down.
You have a sanguine effect on someone, they can calm down and relax.
Maybe from the blood loss lol.
I’m assuming the optimism use of the word comes from the idea of being full of blood? Like, full of vim and vigour, vital spirit, blood. Possibly even from a humoural sense but I’m not that familiar with them. I always forget about this definition and think about the blood, like the other commenters. Thanks for the reminder!
sanguine paradise
That’s how I feel about “lugubrious.” Maybe we could just swap these two so they fit better with their vibes.
It makes me think of languishing or lounging about
I also feel the same way about the word Chagrin. I mean, come on. It literally has the word Grin in it.
Nah, it has too soothing of a ring to it
“Saturnine” is a word for gloomy that comes from a context similar to “sanguine”, i.e., premodern medicine.
When I was a kid learning how to read the word “grin” always threw me off. Why is it spelled that way? like a scowl looks like scowl, but a grin seems kind of evil based on spelling alone
I always think of Sangria.
Sanguine seems like a good name for a pasta dish.
In my head it means something like ‘taken into the blood,’ so I’m fine with the original meaning.
it always reminds me of “exsanguination” and i’ll get them confused a lot.
Maybe confusing it with “sangfroid”.
I have the same issues with the word “opaque”.
