I remember really liking it when I was a kid. Now, though… yuck.
There’s something about a game that punishes you for being in first place that really just annoys me. I think if I didn’t have to worry about getting blue shelled while in the air, and then falling back to 6th place because of it, I’d enjoy the game way more.
And don’t get me wrong, I understand the logic of getting better stuff when you’re in last place than you would in first. Not to mention that if you were in first place and you get a blue shell power up, you’d probably feel like you were strapped to a bomb. So it makes sense.
But guess what? I don’t have to like it. And I don’t.

There is a few different ways to block a blue shell
You could always just turn the items off, though in my opinion you might as well just play Need for Speed or Forza at that point.
the blue shell punishes being first yes but being in first you are safe from the 100 bullshit items the middle people are tossing at each other you literally are rewarded for being in first
You’ve never played Maximum Tune in Asia, Australia, or California.
Have you ever played with friends and after a few races realized that always being in first and winning by half a lap every race is just boring? Because that can be the case even with the current system. If power-ups weren’t delivered based on position then being good at the game would make it almost no fun to play with anyone who wasn’t as good.
I think you just would like a racing game and not Mariokart. Mario kart is about winning through the chaos.

Mario Kart is definitely the worst of the major kart racers. It’s only popular because it’s Nintendo. Crash Team Racing was better in every way, Motorstorm was better in every way, Burnout, Blur and Dirt were better too.
Mario Kart is like 20% skill and 80% luck. If you know the track layout well and you know the best strategies for grabbing items, you’ll do pretty well consistently but sometimes you just get Mario Karted and go from 1st to 12th
Keep just enough lead that once you hear the shell. Slam on the brakes let others pass you get blown up then pass them. Or if you have enough lead take your lumps
