Steak is not that great

r/

I just don’t like steak. The texture, it’s so chewy, it’s rough, and no matter how much I chew it still feels thick. I also find it gets stuck in my teeth more than other meats. I love other meats like turkey, ham, hamburger, and pork. Reason I posted this is cause my sister thinks I’m a weirdo and now is saying I’m a vegan or something.

    Alright I’ll be “that guy”

Guaran-fucking-teed that you haven’t had a good steak.

  7. OrdinarySubstance491 Avatar

You must be ordering it medium or well done or something.

  8. JustTalkToMe5813 Avatar

Well, could it also be that you’ve never had a really good steak? It should be tender, and though it’s chewy, it should definitely not feel like a chore. Whose steak have you had?

  9. RosalieTheDog Avatar

I think steak is just difficult to make at home. It sounds like yours was overdone. For me it’s the king of the meats, but I can’t make it. So much depends on the quality of the meat and the preparation.

Cool you don’t like a thing. Millions of vegans/vegetarians agree with you.

  14. SevereEducation2170 Avatar

Yeah that just sounds like you have had a good, properly cooked steak. Because it wouldn’t have a chewy, tough texture you’re describing if it was a good piece of meat done right.

“saying I’m a vegan or something” Oh heavens forbid how could she insult her own brother like that. Jokes aside take my upvote.

I hated steak growing up then realized I never had a good steak. I was so surprised at what a good steak is. Mind blown. Had been missing out my whole life.

Its not easy to cook well and very easy to mess up. Give it a chance with my method:

    1. Pre-heat the oven to 350, put a pan on the heat as high as it will possibly go. Season a raw steak with salt and pepper
    2. With a tongs and spatula, put the steak down and dont quite burn it, but sear it until its dark brown, use the tongs to sear the sides as well. If there is a fat cap, put it on that side for some time to render the fat. If your entire house isnt full of smoke at this point, it wasnt hot enough. (Open a window and turn on a fan)
    3. If there is no fat to render, add a spoonful of butter, a garlic clove and a sprig of rosemary to the pan, and take it off the heat and put it in the oven
    4. Put in a meat thermometer in the thickest park of the steak from the side and close the oven. Occasionally spoon the butter and herb mixture onto the steak
    5. When the steak reaches 120-125-130 degrees (depending on how done you like it), remove the pan from the oven, remove the pan and leave it uncovered on your stovetop for at least 10 minutes before serving. Steak will continue to cook in the pan, make sure the internal temperature reaches at least 135 degrees.

This method is called “Reverse sear”, is how resteraunts generally do it, and will result in a perfect steak every time.

Lower grade cuts/ bad steak can actually be pretty terrible. But I find steak delicious it needs to be a choice ribeye or better though for me to want to actually eat it and if it’s a NY strip prime.

Prime dry aged steaks are delicious

I also am not a big fan of steak (and before someone says I haven’t had a good one or whatever, yes, I have. My BFF loves steak, and I’ve tried hers. It’s still the texture.) I also don’t like pork for similar reasons. In terms of meat I basically only eat chicken, so I started letting people just assume I was vegetarian when they see me order veggie burgers because it was easier than explaining that I just don’t like the same things as them.

The problem is you’re just having crappy steak. Steak is not supposed to be that chewy.

  21. jagger129 Avatar

I die for filet mignon, medium rare.

The problem with steak is almost aways some guy is burning it on a grill, it’s a bad cut anyway, and it’s dry and gristly. So I don’t generally eat steak when someone says they’re grilling outside at their home. Because you’re right.

But at a good steakhouse cooked properly and not overdone? Amazing!

  22. Blackarm777 Avatar

Based on your description, you’re definitely eating overcooked steak

  23. hypotheticalfroglet Avatar

Entirely agree. I’d rather have roast beef any day. Or mince!

  24. Kcufasu Avatar

If you don’t like it that’s up to you but it doesn’t have to be chewy if cooked right and a decent marbled cut. That being said I do much prefer slow cooked beef to steak any day plus it’s easier to get right

  25. blaq_marketeer Avatar

OP forgot to tell us how he orders it….

As someone who grew up on (our own) Alberta beef, I definitely disagree with you.

I’ve never been impressed by steaks in the states, though. Definitely lower quality meat.

The cut of steak and how it’s cooked mattered a lot. As a kid I had quite a few medium flank steaks that definitely convinced me I hated steak. But you get yourself a nice medium rare ribeye, cooked in butter, garlic, onion, salt, pepper, and thyme, there’s nothing quite like it. Even better, cooked over an open fire. There’s something so viscerally satisfying about red meat cooked with fire.

  28. urlond Avatar

I agree with you, Steak isn’t all that great, not sure why everybody seeks after one. Though once in a while a good steak is good, but it’s not great to have it all time.

  29. neverfrybaconnaked Avatar

Take my upvote. I’m sorry you’ve been eating well done steaks.

I did the Carnivore diet for a year to try to help with Autoimmune Disease. Now just even the smell of steak makes me want to throw up.

  31. happy-girl40 Avatar

I’m not a fan of it either, no matter how well it’s cooked.

  32. Agitated-Cow4 Avatar

Have you tried a panda steak?

Yes!!!!! Steak is SO GROSS!!!! The texture is disgusting!
