I’m thinking of quitting my master’

r/

I’m (22F) in my first year in my Master’s, and I honestly feel like I just can’t do this anymore. I wanted to take a year off to rest and figure things out, but my father forced me to start my Master’s this year instead of waiting.
I was working at a call center because I wanted to save money and move out, but ever since I started my studies, I feel even more overwhelmed. I have no plans for the future, and I don’t even know what to do with my degree.
The worst part is that I have exams this week, and I barely understand anything. Yes, I know it’s my fault because I didn’t study enough, but I really tried I just couldn’t force myself to focus.

Now, I have 2 exams tomorrow and two on Friday, and I’m seriously thinking of just not going.

I feel really lost, and I don’t know what I’m doing. I definitely can’t talk to my father about this he will rage at me 🫠any advice please?

You are an adult. Stop letting a parent make your decisions. Move out and set boundaries. Maybe you can get the job at the call center back. That is more important than talking to your father. He will be unreasonable until he sees that you are going to steer your own life. I bet he settles down then, even if he is not thrilled.

Graduate school is one of those where it’s harder to come back once you take any time off because you are thrown out of sync with the work and schedule you’ve begun. Maybe think about whether or not a Master degree is worth the work…most aren’t. I mean, if you can’t land a respectable paying role with a BA, a MA isn’t going to make it easier and it automatically disqualifies one from many other jobs as overqualified.

There is no timeline you need to follow. If you feel like hitting the pause button, do it. Better do it later than exausting yourself both physically and mentally.

I felt the same in my first semester. But now I’m glad I stuck around and finished it. You’re probably feeling this because you’re not prepared for the exam. Can you do retakes? Maybe instead of quitting altogether, try retaking the exam and giving your all.

Also it might help to talk to a study counselor about if what you’re studying is the right choice for you, or how you could better prepare and understand your coursework.

Graduate school was somewhat easier than undergrad for me. I liked that it was all focused on my area of study. No general Ed.
You didn’t say your field of study? That’s concerning.
