Hi r/tipofmytongue, I’m looking for a specific movie and hoping you can help!
Media Type: Movie
Time Period: Almost certainly released after 2012, so 2000s (maybe very early 2020s).
Detailed Description:
- Protagonist: An older man, likely 60s or 70s, living alone in an apartment. I remember him being almost bald, with a short white beard, somewhat chubby, and a round face. He might have seemed a bit mentally confused or isolated, but not necessarily presented as having Alzheimer’s. I also recall him having two adult children (a son and a daughter) who might have been minor characters or visited him.
- Plot Point 1 (Suicide): There’s a significant scene where a woman commits suicide by jumping from a building. He might have witnessed this from his window.
- Plot Point 2 (The Knocker): This is very distinct – a woman repeatedly knocks on his apartment door. He later asks about her and discovers that this specific woman had actually died a long time ago. This strongly suggests a ghostly/supernatural element or a psychological delusion/hallucination.
- Tone/Genre: The movie felt very sad and melancholic. It was primarily a Drama, possibly with elements of Psychological Thriller or Supernatural Drama.
- Origin: I am quite convinced it was a Spanish film. However, after extensive searching based on this, I’m now slightly open to it being from another European country (France, Italy?) or maybe Latin American (Argentina?), though Spanish remains my strongest guess.
- Poster Memory (Fuzzy): I have a vague recollection of a poster featuring the old man and an older woman (similar age), possibly in a close-up similar to “The Father”‘s poster style, using blue and/or violet color tones. This memory is less reliable than the plot points.
What it’s NOT:
It is definitely NOT The Father, Amour, ¿Y tú quién eres?, Wrinkles (Arrugas), The Tenant, Rear Window, Mientras Duermes, El Habitante Incierto, or any film starring the most obvious Spanish actors fitting the age/description post-2012 (we checked many like Sacristán, Echanove, Juan Diego, Resines, Karra Elejalde, etc.).
The combination of the specific protagonist type, the jumping suicide, AND the “dead woman knocking” feels very unique.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks for any leads!
