I got a 46 on a university test. My mental health wasn’t doing great before, this just set me off. I still have 2 exams left on that course so I can still get a decent grade. But I studied so hard and I feel like no matter how much hard work I put into something, I’ll still fail.

Hi OP — different people learn in different ways, and one of the biggest challenges of university can be learning how to learn, for some people. If you are struggling with a course, it’s a good idea to talk to the professor. If there are study groups for the course, maybe you can join them. Find out if there are any workshops on how to learn. Do you know what the problem with the particular course for you is? There will always be strategies. You just haven’t figured out what the problem is yet. You could possibly have an undiagnosed learning difficulty which would mean you would definitely need to use other strategies to learn and sometimes even to write exams. Failing a test doesn’t mean you are a failure, it just means that what you were doing wasn’t working for you, and it’s time to try a different tactic to help you retain information, or write exams. Talk to the prof. Tell them what is going on with you. Ask them for their advice. Maybe the university has a guidance counsellor who can help with figuring out learning styles. I know how hard it is to feel like nothing you do works out, but also that is just a feeling, not reality. Much of what you do works out. You just need to figure out what the tools are that you need now.
