Is it normal to feel like you need a shower every day?

r/

I was talking with some girlfriends and the topic came up about showers and a few mentioned showering every other day and only washing hair a couple times a week. Personally I feel so gross in my lower abdomen/crotch area if I don’t shower every single day. Plus I feel like my hair is greasy after 24 hours and I like to wash it almost every day, very rarely every other day. Am I odd here or normal? Do most shower every day?

I shower twice a day. I think it’s odd to not shower at least once.

  2. bbspiders Avatar

I can’t comfortably get into bed without having showered that day. I feel like as soon as I walk outside I now smell and feel like, “outside” and can’t really relax until I’ve showered.

I also exercise and am just pretty active overall so I need to shower. I don’t wash my hair daily, though.

  3. potatounicorn4 Avatar

I take a body bath almost everyday (if i have been to the gym that day shower is a MUST) and i wash my hair 2-3 times a week since i have really dry wavy hair

  4. Uhhyt231 Avatar

Yes. I shower everyday. I wash my hair weekly but I have kinky hair so still on track

  5. ambitiousboxerdog Avatar

I don’t feel gross per se, but I absolutely shower 1-2x per day without exception (I also live in the tropics). I find it really off-putting when people don’t shower daily. 😬

  6. TikaPants Avatar

I usually shower every day in summer and every other depending on if I sweat r need a body wash. I wash my hair every other day.

  7. ThrowRAmangos2024 Avatar

I used to need to wash my hair every day. Since then I’ve trained it to need it every 3 ish days. Depends on how sweaty I get too. I think different types of hair are different too, and everyone sweats differently as well. I’m not a big sweater whereas I know people who are.

That said, I very rarely skip a day of showering once. I work out most mornings so I’ll shower then. Even when I don’t, I’ll usually do a quick rinse at the end of the day.

  8. Ad0r4 Avatar

I shower everyday also. (Okay maybe one Saturday in a blue moon I stay in my PJs all day, hugging my couch and not take a shower but that’s it)

  9. cardigancounting Avatar

Your hair is likely over producing oil because you wash it so frequently.

  10. stephlane80 Avatar

Yes, showering every day is normal. I would feel gross otherwise.

  11. missdawn1970 Avatar

I feel gross if I don’t shower every day. I only wash my hair once a week, but I get it wet every day to freshen it up.

  12. stoned_rambler Avatar

i shower at least once a day, and wash my hair everyday. have noticed my allergies arent as bad with daily hair washes so am going off of that experience. am prior service though, so have definitely gone without showering for a few days🫠

  13. Head-Drag-1440 Avatar

I have to shower every day, but wash my wavy hair only twice a week. I shower with a shower cap between wash days to keep it dry.

  14. crazynekosama Avatar

I shower everyday and I wash my hair every 3-4 days.

  15. SunsetAndSilence Avatar

What’s normal is what works for you. We all have different needs in this regard. And there are other variables, too, like the local climate, the time of year, your daily activities, and so on.

For what it’s worth, I’m similar to you. I shower and wash my hair each day – I feel gross, and my hair also gets greasy without daily maintenance (I have pretty fine and naturally oily hair).

  16. Appropriate_Sky_6571 Avatar

    I can’t sleep without a shower

  17. Western_Mud_1490 Avatar

Our skin and hair and habits are all different! I am a sweaty person (especially with postpartum night sweats 🤮), I work out or at least take a good walk every day, and I like the act of taking 15-20 minutes for myself to shower and get ready before bed. I find it relaxing. I only wash my hair 1-2 times a week though, otherwise it gets dry, plus I don’t want to style it that often. There are other people who can shower every other day and smell just fine. There’s no rule, and I don’t think anyone is gross for having different habits than I do.

  18. clrwCO Avatar

I’ll just jump in as someone that doesn’t shower daily. It’s dry AF here and I would probably disintegrate if it did! I generally shower every other day and wash my hair maybe every 5ish days. Caveat that I’m also a thru hiker (2200 miles on the Appalachian trail) and went many days and even 2 weeks at one point without a shower while hiking all day every day. After that experience, not much I do in my day to day life feels that dirty.

  19. eratoast Avatar

I shower every day or twice a day typically M-F (after I work out). I don’t wash my hair every day because I’m lazy.

  20. Victoriafoxx Avatar

I shower every other day, I only wash my hair once or twice a week because it’s curly. If I work out, I’ll shower after that. When I’m on my period, I shower everyday.

  21. cag0811 Avatar

I feel as I’ve gotten older after 30 that yes, I think showering when I get up and then Belford bed can be necessary most days.

  22. calliope720 Avatar

I may not shower every day if I’m just at home and not getting very sweaty. I can go a couple of days if I’m not moving around much. But I never go out to do anything in person without showering first. I don’t mind some second-day hair grease if no one’s seeing me but me, but I would never turn up that way around other people.

  23. ikoabd Avatar

Shower every day. Wash my hair every 4-7 days, depending on season, activity level, and honestly my energy levels. I have thick, curly, mid-back length hair, so washing it is a COMMITMENT.

  24. JessonBI89 Avatar

I may skip a shower for one day if I have too many things going on. But it’s definitely my preference to have one every day.

  25. Ladygoingup Avatar

I don’t wash my hair everyday and I usually need to shower everyday. I have had times where I didn’t feel the need to. I work from home and don’t leave the house times. I will freshen up and skip. But usually only in winter. It’s too hot here most the year to skip though.

  26. queenmother00 Avatar

Uh….I shower once every 4 days-ish. I use to shower everyday when I was a teen/20s. My hair use to get greasy the next day when I was showering every day, now it can go about 2 ish days of non greasy hair and day thee is meh, depending on the type of shampoo I use. I will clean certain parts of me every day, my face, feet, hands.

  27. nalycat Avatar

It really depends on how active I’ve been.

I have bipolar and when I’m in a depressed state, it’s REALLY hard for me to shower. So when I’m like that, I usually do every other day. Even that’s hard though and sometimes I get my bf to take a shower with me just to body double.

If I worked out that day, yeah I’ll definitely shower. But I haven’t had the energy or motivation to work out recently.

I wash my hair once a week because it’s below my butt and a pain in the ass to wash and dry. But my hair is used to it and I don’t get oily fast in the scalp.

No one died from skipping one shower. Gross? To some and that’s fine. But it’s not impacting anyone’s health and we don’t know WHY they are skipping a day.

I wear really good deodorant and put it on a couple times a day.

  28. UnderwaterKahn Avatar

Personally I feel grimy if I don’t shower every evening. I wake up in the middle of the night and feel absolutely gross. But I only wash my hair a couple times a week. I have naturally curly hair and it’s bleached. I have a close friend who has super sensitive, dry skin, and she only bathes a couple times a week because her skin can become so dry it cracks (it’s likely autoimmune related). I’m sure she has a hygiene routine, but it’s not something she’s shared with anyone. My mom is in her late 70s and she only showers a couple times a week because her skin has become really delicate. She’s not super active so it’s kind of a different situation.

  29. katie-kaboom Avatar

I absolutely shower every day, sometimes twice (or I take a bath). I don’t wash my hair everyday because it’s too long, but I did when I kept it short and it would get greasier. I think this is totally normal.

  30. howlongwillbetoolong Avatar

People vary. I think best practice is to wash crotch and butt minimum once a day, wash whole body daily to every other day depending on skin concerns and activity level, and wash hair as needed.

Personally I wash my whole body everyday in the shower and I wash my hair 2x week.

  31. nannymegan Avatar

I wash my hair about once a week unless something crazy happens. I shower every night before bed. I sleep horribly if I don’t wash the day away.

  32. OopsieP00psie Avatar

I shower twice a day, including a hair wash each time, and I feel gross if I don’t. Everyone says it’s awful for my hair, but I feel nasty and weirdly itchy if I skip it.

I also work out and dance usually multiple times a day, but need the showers even on rest days.

  33. FishGoBlubb Avatar

Yeah, daily showers are normal. But less often is also normal, which a lot of people find difficult to fathom.

  34. No-Cabinet1670 Avatar

I shower at least once a day but only wash my hair every three days or so. To be fair: I have curly hair and don’t use much product so it doesn’t get oily.

  35. peanutbrat14 Avatar

I shower once or twice a day during the summer, but during the winter I shower every other day as long as I’m just staying at home. If I go out in public I shower. I use sensitive baby wipes to freshen my genitalia on the days that I don’t shower. I also have bangs so I’ll spritz some dry shampoo them to get rid of the oil.

  36. LadyMirkwood Avatar

    I think so.

I can’t get into my nice clean bed without washing the day off me first. My hair I wash less often as it’s long and thick and gets really frizzy if It’s done too often, so once a week in Winter, every three days in the Summer.

  37. sweetgemberry Avatar

I shower everyday, and I wash my hair 1-3x per week. I leave it in a clip or I braid it in between washes. Washing less has made my hair less oily over time

  38. Exotic_Resource_6200 Avatar

I’m with you, I take a shower and/or bath daily and wash my hair daily.

I attempt to do what my gfs do sometimes on the weekend and by Sunday, I’m running to the shower by 3:00 pm. because I feel sticky and smelly.

I definitely cant go to work without a shower.

  39. debbie666 Avatar

My hair was greasier when I was younger and now that I’m in my 50s, I only use shampoo once or twice a week. That being said, besides a goblin day on a day off when I don’t shower, I wash daily and on days when I don’t use shampoo I will use cowash instead. I don’t like how strongly my privates smell when I skip a day and wouldn’t want to be out and about while feeling stinky. And I always shower before work.

  40. Konjonashipirate Avatar

I shower daily and I wash my hair every 2ish days. Everyone’s different.

  41. Careless-Ability-748 Avatar

I shower every day and wash my hair as well. I feel better when I do.

  42. Violet_K89 Avatar

Shower EVERY DAY is normal, even if the water dries my skin off I’ll be there! Nothing more relaxing, feel good sensation then getting home and taking a nice hot nuclear shower and feeling clean 🥰. Count on me! Now my hair I do once a week, otherwise it looks like crap. Requires way more work than just lotion up my skin after.

  43. winter_name01 Avatar

It depends on your lifestyle. If you work from home, don’t go to the gym, don’t cook, don’t have pets, don’t use public transportation… I could start to understand why you would skip some shower.
But when you actually have some outside activities even if you don’t sweat your body got dirty.
Hair is another topic since it depends on your skin, hair type, products you use etc

  44. ellef86 Avatar

Depends on the climate, the weather, your skin, your hair, your activities… there is no universal odd vs normal for this.

I don’t currently feel I need to shower on days I’m just working from home and doing little else, but in the summer I feel differently as I sweat more. I often shower twice if I’m on holiday somewhere hot as I hate feeling sticky.

I shower on any day I’m going out and doing stuff with other people.

I wash my hair once a week – it’s thick and long and naturally curly and I don’t feel like it needs more than that most of the time as it’s not particularly greasy (if anything it looks better towards the end of the week). But, again, that doesn’t apply all year round no matter what – sometimes I can stretch it beyond a week, other times I need to do it more often.

  45. Oyasuminasai3 Avatar

I shower every two days and wash my (curly 3B-C) hair twice a week. But I also have a water jet in my bathroom that helps me keep/feel clean in the crotch area. As other said, it also depends on the time of year/location/daily physical activities, but it can help to have the right garments

  46. justsamthings Avatar

I definitely feel like I need to shower every day. If I don’t, I can start to smell myself—not like full-on BO, but kind of a stale, sweaty smell. I’ll even shower twice in one day if I’ve been walking around in summer heat.

I also wash my hair daily, but I don’t think everyone needs to do that. It really depends on your hair type.

  47. bleh_bleh_blu Avatar

Where I live, South Western Ontario, its very dry. I get nose bleed almost all through the year. I shower/ bathe every other days and wash hair twice a week. That being said, I wash my armpit, downstairs and other nook and crannies everyday even though I don’t fully take a full shower. Like shower is not the problem, but putting lottion and oil on whole body after that takes a lot of time for me. And if I skip my oil after shower, I will become crispy like potato chips very soon.

  48. SaraKatie90 Avatar

I shower most days but not every day. Probably 5–6 days of the week. But I live in a very cold climate. I shower more if I’m somewhere warm.

  49. RiseAndPanic Avatar

I absolutely shower every day, but my hair only gets washed 2-3x per week.

  50. SheMakesMoneyMove Avatar

I can maybe go a day and a half without showering, but daily is definitely my preference. Sometimes I’ll have a quick cold shower in the morning and a hot bath in the evening.

  51. AddiieBee Avatar

I shower twice a day. I don’t feel dirty in the morning, but it feels part of my routine. I always shower at night because that’s when I feel I genuinely need it & I like to do my skincare.

  52. greenwitch64 Avatar

I excercise a lot so I shower every night, it’s like a before bed ritual, sometimes in the morning too if I’ve gotten sweaty AF. Wash my hair twice a week, it’s curly so that’s the reason I can get away with that. I think just what works for you is what works for you.

  53. Prior-Scholar779 Avatar

I’ve been showering every day since I was 13yo. I’m still alive, and my hair is healthy and shiny. If I go a day without I feel like a grease factory! Only downside is with going camping and feeling grotty because I didn’t have my shower.

Edit: my hair is fine, and my skin is oily.

  54. cthulhuwantshugs Avatar

Different people have different environments, activity levels, skin and hair types, not to mention comfort levels, habits, cultural expectations, and available resources.

So some of us need or like more showers, and some need or like fewer. If your routine is comfortable, keeping you healthy, and not causing people around you to avoid you, chances are you’re “normal.” As far as I can tell, most people in my generation/social class take showers every day or every other day, but no doubt the folks with oily skin and physical jobs in Alabama take more showers than the dry-skinned desk jockeys in Iceland on average. As long as we don’t smell terrible or wreck our skin with constant scrubbing, odds are we’re in the normal range.

  55. eveninghope Avatar

I absolutely shower every day. Wash hair most days/every other day. Daily: AT LEAST crotch, underarm, underboob, feet. Lotion. Face routine.

  56. mckenzie_jayne Avatar

I have to rinse off DAILY (usually right before bed), or else I can’t get in bed — weird OCD thing maybe. My hair is washed once a week and is very greasy by the end of the week, but washing it too much dries out my hair.

  57. TraditionalCookie472 Avatar

I exercise daily so definitely shower everyday. Plus I have curly hair that is unmanageable if it’s not cowashed every day.

  58. Jeepersca Avatar

My hair gets greasy in less than 24 hours but I found a dry shampoo I love that lets it go for 2 to 3 days. (Ecoroots) I also installed one of those super cheap bidet options on my toilet, cost about $24 off of Amazon. It does wonders to making me feel a bit more fresh if I’m not taking a shower. I work from home so there are times that I’m just not motivated or I’m waiting until I know I’m going to wash my hair going someplace.

  59. SugarT0ast Avatar

I think what’s normal, depends on who you are. Also, something is considered abnormal behavior only if it causes problems for someone or others. So if you were obsessive about showering and it would cause problems for you if you didn’t shower daily, then it would be abnormal.

I shower depending on what I did that day, and my energy levels (I have ME and Sjogren’s). If I don’t go outside, don’t wear sunscreen on my body, don’t sweat- and I’m not feeling a shower, then I won’t. It’s not like I’m getting dirty. Also, I have dry skin, so it’s easy to over shower.

That said, I tend to shower daily, at night before bed. Getting into a clean bed with clean skin just feels nice. I do only wash my hair 1-2 times a week. I have very dry skin, and dry scalp. It’s also curly and wild. So I get a blowout, and try to keep it as long as possible. Cause washing my hair is a chore and a half.

I think the longest I went without showering (since being an adult and in charge of my own showers, and not horribly depressed and not taking care of myself) was maybe 4 days? Like I showered on the 4th day.

I work with seniors, dementia patients and those at end of life. I will say- we shower more than we NEED to. As a society. It helps keep diseases at bay, but it can dry out our skin and hair. The reason I bring this up is that a lot of families with a loved one with dementia will complain that they aren’t showering and smell a little. They want the caregivers to make them shower. 1) we can’t MAKE someone do something. 2) It’s not actually hurting the dementia patient. It’s just annoying and stinky to the family. If it’s not breaking down skin, or causing an infection- then it’s not a big deal. We will try to get them to shower at the next visit.

  60. meshuggas Avatar

Yes it is absolutely normal. It’s also normal to not feel like you need one daily. I think it depends on the individual – their preferences, activities and genetics.

Personally, I shower daily. I exercise almost every day and go to the barn with horses (and while I don’t mind the smell, others definitely notice haha). My hair also gets oily as well.

Maybe I skip the odd day if I haven’t worked out but not often.

  61. Reasonable-Side-2921 Avatar

    People don’t shower everyday😳?

  62. kimchipowerup Avatar

I think the pandemic changed our routines. For me, if I haven’t done a workout that day and have been working from home, I’m fine with skipping a day. But sometimes I like a hot bath at the end of the day anyway to wind down before sleep.💤

  63. little_wandererrr Avatar

I shower about every other day (unless I work out then I def shower) and wash my hair about every 4 days. Every night before bed I clean down there with a Summers Eve wipe. I also use a bidet.

    ETA I work from home

  64. Ohhhh_Mylanta Avatar

I think a lot of it depends on lifestyle. When I was younger and worked in restaurants or daycares, I absolutely wanted to shower everyday just to get the smells off of me. Now I work an office job and I’m more likely to shower every other day, although I do still wash up every morning and every night. I think a lot of people make an assumption that if you’re not taking a shower, you’re not cleaning yourself, and that’s just not really true

  65. MomsBored Avatar

Proper hygiene is everything. I was raised to shower 1-2 times a day. I don’t understand the every few days people.

  66. studiousametrine Avatar

Definitely bathe 6-7 times a week! Wash my hair? 2-4 weeks, depending on energy levels 😩

  67. wtfamidoing248 Avatar

I showered every day when I was younger bc I was more active and sweaty. Nowadays? Every other day. I work from home, so if I’m not going to the gym every day, I don’t need to shower every day. Every other day works for me. In warm weather, I’m more inclined to shower daily, though. Otherwise, no need.

  68. kgberton Avatar

Most people shower every day or two, yes

  69. DepartmentRound6413 Avatar

I need to shower 2x a day. The 2nd shower is just a quick rinse but I need it to feel clean and wash away the day.

  70. m-j10 Avatar

I, 33, shower every night and wash my hair every 3 days. On non hair wash days, I put my hair in a shower cap.

  71. Remarkable_Story9843 Avatar

I shower daily (I’m a sweaty sleeper) but I only wash my hair 2x a week. I rinse it with water while I shower each day. But I have curly hair.

  72. BunnyKimber Avatar

In regular hygiene routine has me showering/bathing about 2-3 times a week. If I’ve worked up a sweat doing something I always shower as soon as I can afterwards but my skin dries and breaks out if I shower more than once every 2-3 days.”

  73. deviety Avatar

I shower every 2 or 3 days, or gym days. Sometimes it’s back to back, sometimes it’s day 3 and I go “ok fine let’s do this”

  74. Ok_Seaweed1996 Avatar

They must not be physically active. I go to the gym everyday and I work with kids, so I shower after morning gym and at night after working with germy little ones. I’d still wash my privates daily in the shower regardless.

  75. Yogabeauty31 Avatar

I need a shower every single day for sure or I will not feel right or comfortable getting into bed lol but Its actual common to NOT wash your hair every single day. Its good for your hair to have a little natural oil to it. but if it feels gross to you personally then wash it. Hair stylist will even say you “dont need to wash everyday”

  76. mvuanzuri Avatar

Totally – I shower every day, even when I’m sick and it’s just a bare minimum refresher shower.

I also am fairly active day-to-day and have very fine hair that gets oily quickly, so it’s rare I go a day without sweating substantially or needing to wash my hair (aforementioned sick days being the only example that comes to mind).

  77. sundaesmilemily Avatar

I usually shower every other day to prevent hair damage and drying out my skin, and then I do a bird bath in the sink and use dry shampoo on my off day. But I will shower every day if I get too sweaty in the summer or feel like I need it.

  78. Rosemarysage5 Avatar

Shower daily unless I’m being a bum or camping. Hair washed once a week unless I’m exercising a lot

  79. velvedire Avatar

I shower if I’ve been sweaty that day, which almost never used to happen but yay perimenopause!
I also shower if I’ve been doing dirty things like yardwork or woodworking.

In winter I might shower every third day. Summer can be twice a day. I wear natural materials which don’t get nasty fast like polyester does. That makes a big difference. Also fresh underwear a couple of times a day.

During allergy season, my hair gets washed every damn day. Otherwise probably weekly.

  80. Least_Promise5171 Avatar

I shower twice a day. It’s honestly one of my favorite things to do as a human. I know it’s a waste of water and I’m sorry but I just like feeling fresh and don’t like to sleep with deodorant on. I also like to brush my teeth, shave, wash my face in the shower vs in the sink.

  81. HugsyBugsy Avatar

Wait what? I shower every day, sometimes twice a day 🤷🏼‍♀️

  82. metaltsoris Avatar

wow this thread is showing me how few people here have experienced serious mental illness. and that’s not meant to be shady at all. just that a lot of the population doesn’t know how lucky they are to be mentally stable and in control of their actions and habits. if you’ve ever been or known someone with debilitating depression or other mental health conditions, sometimes showering every day is bizarrely out of reach. imagine asking someone to just get up and run a marathon, or fly a plane. that’s how daunting it is.

that said I have been anywhere between daily to every two days. showering every day turns my skin into ashy leather. its OK if you don’t shower every day and it’s OK if you do. I think the beauty/personal hygiene industry has definitely done a lot of work to convince people they need frequent, intricate routines so they can overconsume extremely specific products every single day. and I’m someone who loves skincare so I’m part of that too! just saying, you’re not a total freak or pariah if you’re only bathing 3 or 4 times a week. we could all stand to be a bit less judgy when it comes to personal preferences and experiences.

  83. CatelynsCorpse Avatar

I shower every day unless I’m sick or something. I only wash my hair once a week though. I used to wash it once a day or every other day, but over time my scalp has gotten adjusted to being washed less frequently so my hair is not greasy after a week…and it used to get greasy AF if I’d skip ONE day. In other words, my hair is probably less greasy after a week than yours is after a day or two BECAUSE you wash it every day.

  84. FirePaddler Avatar

I like to shower every day, but I also wish that more people understood that what feels clean or unclean to us has a lot to do with how we were taught and what we’re used to rather than what’s necessary for good hygiene. In modern times, most of us are quite excessively soaped and scrubbed. I promise it’s fine if someone goes 48 hours without cleansing every inch of their body.

  85. BonnieBlu22 Avatar

Feeling squeaky clean is glorious, but I don’t need to have a shower every day in order to not feel gross. I usually shower every other day. Sometimes, it’s longer if I’m just sitting at home and don’t have anyone to impress. I keep wipes in the bathroom for when I feel I need them after toileting. Plus, they are super convenient during periods. For some reason, I always feel disgusting after a day of travel through the airport, though. Travel day = shower day. Work out day = shower day. Hot sweaty day = shower day.
I have thicker, dry, wavy hair, so it doesn’t feel greasy quickly. Probably wash it 1-2 times a week on average.

I struggle with mental health issues at times and have gone long periods of time without showering, though. Baby wipes!

  86. Appropriate-Damage65 Avatar

I shower at least once a day. Sometimes I’ll do a quick 3-5 min shower in the morning to help me wake up and a more thorough shower or bath later in the evening.

  87. elvis-wantacookie Avatar

I used to be an every other day girlie (aside from summer), but I’ve become a much sweatier human being over the last few years so I now shower at least once a day, often twice just to wet my hair real quick or because I’m craving hot water. I don’t care what others do though unless they’re stinky, that’s their business

  88. Regular_Durian_1750 Avatar

I shower every day, sometimes twice a day. I don’t use a bidet because of the mess and sharing a bathroom with another person, so I must shower every day. Occasionally, when I’m not able to like I’m sick or something, I get depressed. I’m now so used to it – I think I’ll actually go crazy if I can’t shower more than a day.

But I have long hair and I put in some products and all that. I’ll go broke if I washed my hair every day. The oily thing is real, but mine gets like that after 4 days of no wash…and it starts smelling too, which is when I finally wash my hair.

  89. elvis-wantacookie Avatar

I also wash my hair every day because I have like three pieces & they get greasy by the next morning 😂

  90. RomanPotato8 Avatar

Everyone is different! What works for me, might not work for you.

I grew up a competitive swimmer with a mum that had her hair saloon for now 40+ years. She was terrified of the fact that I’d wash my hair every day with both shampoo and conditioner and my hair was absolutely FRIED but chlorine and I swear, I think I smelled like it for the next 2 years after I stopped. Now I’m 32, I shower every day after work, it is my daily ritual and it helps me wash the day away (also, yes, I feel nasty after a day of work). But I wash my hair every 3-4 days depending on how I feel / look. When I’m having a good week hair they are long and straight and clean and beautiful for like 3 days in a row, then there are shit weeks were like I’d wash them and be greasy within 24 hours. I also learned to not touch my hair constantly!

I shower every other day – definitely on days where I run, and then also wash my hair. The other days I wash myself with a washing cloth and some soap and water. If I shower every day, my skin will get very dry whether I use tons of lotion or not.

I do find my hair getting more greasy compared to my once a week hair wash routine I had before. I just can’t stand unwashed hair after a run, just getting it wet doesn’t work for me. It’s probably just in my head, but it doesn’t feel clean like if I don’t wash my hair after the exercise.

I had really thick long hair when I was young and my roots would get oily so fast I washed it daily. I also had to shave my legs daily in the summer (dark thick hair). I felt so gross if I went without a shower, I refused to go in public and was often showering multiple times a day.

Now days … I’m in my 40’s and if I washed my hair daily – it would fall out. I can easily go three days without a wash now and you can barely tell. My skin cannot handle a full head to toe wash in the winter and the hair on my legs is now soft and almost gone in places.

Everyone’s different .. and it will all change as you age. I’m glad I had oily skin when I was young now, my winkles are less than others my age!

I feel disgusting and greasy if I don’t shower. I also have trouble falling asleep if I don’t shower before bed. It’s like washing the day off. I do wash my hair every third day, at the suggestion of my hairdresser.

  94. Pandadrome Avatar

On colder months I tend to skip one or two shower days per week. I still wash my crotch and armpits even if I don’t shower.

I wash my hair every 3-5 days. It’s bleached and fine so everyday hairwash is not recommended.

In summer I shower daily, usually both morning and after coming home from work.

I love this question because it is a great example of the new “normal.”

I hear so many women talking about they must take a shower and wash their hair everyday. My daughter does. And they seem shocked when other women don’t. I realize a lot of younger women don’t realize that showering and washing your hair everyday or every other day was the exception rather than the rule until maybe 40-50 years ago.

When I was raised, until I was about 10, we had 2 bathtubs but no shower. Unless I was extremely dirty I took a bath once or twice a week. I washed my hair by dunking my head in the sudsy tub and rinsed it with water I ran into a cup. Once we moved and one bathroom had a shower, I switched to showers sometimes, but didn’t change the frequency. My older sister did the same except she washed her hair in the sink. Then pin curled it and sat under a dryer for an hour. My mom had her hair washed and set once a week at the beauty shop. She might have bathed 2 times a week. But from before my birth in the late 1950s until probably the mid 1970s, my mom never washed her hair at home and never more than once a week. We were pretty normal in my middle class neighborhood and among friends and family.

There is no right answer to your question. Shower as often as you need or want to. Wash your hair when needed. I do it more frequently now but rarely every day. But realize that bathing daily is a really new thing and in the world overall, still not the norm.

  96. Alternative-Bet232 Avatar

Everyone is different. Some people sweat a lot but don’t get smelly easily. Some people get smelly but maybe don’t sweat so much. Some people love the feeling of a long hot shower. Some people hate showering.

But to answer your question: yes, showering once daily is very much in the normal range.

  97. Vtjeannieb Avatar

Prepare for this maybe changing. When working,I showered every day. But now that I’m 72 and retired, I don’t get as dirty/sweaty, and showering every day dries my skin out too much in the winter.

  98. browngirlygirl Avatar

Yes, it’s normal to shower every day.

    Your friends are gross.

  99. veronicagh Avatar

When I am fully WFH I shower and wash my hair every other day.

If I am going into an office or doing more than casual errands like a neighborhood walk or grocery trip, I have to shower. The worst feeling for me is when I try to get away without a shower and then am like at a desk next to someone or in a social setting at a table with people and I’m like..I feel gross all over my body and I think they can smell me.

  100. AnaT1011 Avatar

I shower every 2 days usually if I’m not doing anything, sweating, or going out. I work remotely in a cooler climate and don’t usually sweat at all, I also have extremely thick hair I only need to wash 1-2x per week. But I always shower before going out to be social, always after exercising, going swimming, or doing anything more active. I shower more often, sometimes daily, when it is hotter outside. I’ve had times where I’ve gone more days when I was depressed. But that is not typical. I also will note that during the 1 long relationship I had when I was having sex regularly, I showered daily. But I’ve been single for a long time so it’s not as much of a concern for me.

  101. PattesDornithorynque Avatar

Follow up question for everyone that do not showers everyday :

So…you have sex without showering? Even oral sex?

I personally shower everyday and would not even consider having sex with someone who hasn’t shower in the last 12 hours.

  102. Astronaut_Cheesecake Avatar

I sweat every day due to exercise so yes an every day shower is a must.

  103. PaperNinjaPanda Avatar

I prefer to shower twice a day lol. In the morning before work and in the evening before bed to wash the day off.

But realistically I might get to shower every other day with my 3 year old who won’t go to bed until 11 lol

  104. CulturalBerry1051 Avatar

I body shower every day. my hair washing schedule depends on my work schedule (I’m hybrid). but it’s not uncommon for me to go days without washing my hair 🤷🏼‍♀️

  105. notme1414 Avatar

I’m pretty much the same as you. The only time I will skip a shower I’d if I’m really feeling lazy and not going out at all. But yeah, I feel yucky if I miss a day.

  106. sweetnsaltyanxiety Avatar

I shower every single day. I feel gross if I don’t. However I only wash my hair about twice a week unless I get sweaty. The rest of the time I just use dry shampoo.

  107. estedavis Avatar

I shower every other day and wash my hair 1-2 times a week (it gets greasy sooo quickly otherwise). I work from home so especially in the winter I’m not showering every day, my skin would get so dry and irritated. The only exception is that I’ll always shower after the gym or getting really sweaty.

  108. Caramelhime Avatar

Yes that’s normal, I like to shower once a day or every other day depending on the weather and I wash my hair 2 times a week

  109. homemakinghedgewitch Avatar

I shower everyday, but I only shampoo my hair once a week. Every second day it gets wet and I use a conditioner only. On shampoo day it gets washed twice and deep conditioned.

If I garden or sweat a lot I’ll have two showers in a day but they are under 5 minutes. Soap up and rinse off. I also have a hot tub so I shower before the tub.

  110. TheLoneliestGhost Avatar

I used to be an every day, or more than once a day kind of person. Now I shower every other day or so. During the pandemic I trained my hair so now it doesn’t get greasy for about a week. It’s worth it to fight off the oil overproduction.

  111. ProfessionalEarly965 Avatar

I shower daily. When summer comes and it’s humid and working out in the yard 🥵 I shower twice a day.

  112. randombubble8272 Avatar

I don’t shower daily. I WFH full time, and if I don’t exercise that day or it’s not particularly warm out I don’t sweat that much and don’t need to shower. I wash my hair less frequently because I have natural curls which are very dry naturally so it doesn’t hold grease much

  113. trialnfailure Avatar

I aim for every day just because it helps me feel better overall. Plus, there’s no place like the shower to be belting out pop punk songs 😅

  114. Purplezzz20 Avatar

I shower everyday but only wash my hair every 5-6 days because I have long hair and it’s a pain to wash, dry and straighten. I use dry shampoo occasionally to refresh and it works well.

  115. Zestyclose-Warning96 Avatar

I shower every day but wash my hair twice a week. I don’t feel like I’m ready to start the day if I don’t have a shower.

  116. MelloKitty171 Avatar

I don’t think it’s abnormal. But i feel the same way. If my home isn’t clean and if I feel gross, I can’t relax. It literally makes me anxious

  117. antique_velveteen Avatar

I shower every day. I do not understand how people don’t bathe daily. Hair washing, whatever. Each hair type is different. But wash your body every day. My husband will try to crawl into bed without a shower that day and I’m like “absolutely not”.

  118. ProperBingtownLady Avatar

I body shower every day and wash my hair every 3 days. Sometimes I’ll shower at night too if I’m feeling too lazy to wash my face in the sink.

  119. silver_fawn Avatar

I live in Florida. I shower at least once a day, sometimes twice. Hair wash every other day.

  120. Rabro Avatar

When I’m in my luteal phase for me yeah. I tend to feel ick

  121. southernjezebel Avatar

Unless I get excessively dirty or sweaty inbetween (far more likely in summer since it’s hotter than Hades here) I wash my hair once a week.

I wash my body, either a – pardon the term, it’s what my French grandmother called a “whore’s bath”, basically face, underarms, under breasts, and ladybits, or I pin my hair up and take an actual bath in the tub, daily.

I take the full shower with scalp mask, hair wash, shampoo, shaving, exfoliating, moisturizing, mask, etc, on Sundays.

Edit: It may be worthwhile to add that while I’m 43 I maintain my hair color as a sooty amethyst purple and that isn’t the only reason for washing my hair once a week, but it does help prevent color fade.

  122. misskarcrashian Avatar

During the winter I only shower every other day because my skin gets so dry and uncomfortable being showered everyday. During the summer when I’m more active and sweaty, I will shower everyday.

  123. jahlove24 Avatar

I wash my body daily or almost every day (sometimes skip a day on the weekend). I wash my hair about 3 times a week. I work in an air-conditioned office and rarely get hot or sweaty. However, when I used to work in retail, I showered and washed my hair every day or twice a day. Everyone is different!

  124. Vivid-Amount-3507 Avatar

Not showering every day is gross. Even if all you did was sit on the couch all day your body still produces sweat and bacteria especially in the crotch area. As far as the hair goes, that can vary based on hair type.

  125. ineedvitaminsea Avatar

I shower EVERYDAY I feel gross if I don’t especially going to bed without a shower. I wash my hair everyday also works for me. I work outside and I sweat. I don’t want my scalp dirty from sweat so I wash it instead of putting junk in it to absorb the sweat and oil

  126. MiloMM123 Avatar

I shower and wash my hair everyday. My hair is naturally very fine and gets greasy so easily. I’ve tried “training” my hair and my scalp literally starts to itch after a day. I couldn’t handle it.

  127. dianacakes Avatar

It depends on activity level for me. I work out first thing in the morning and sweat a lot so I shower immediately after. But on days I don’t work out, I don’t always shower. I wash my hair 1-2x per week though. In winter I can get away with once per week and twice a week as it gets hotter. But I will say that even if I don’t shower, I still put on clean clothes. I can argue that my body isn’t dirty enough to shower but I can’t wear underwear more than one day!

  128. Nopenotme77 Avatar

I am certain there are people who can shower every other day or less. Me, you don’t want to be around me if I don’t shower twice a day(at least).

I am just a smelly stinky person when I sweat.

  129. wandering_salad Avatar

People’s skin and hair needs can be very different. I am fine washing my hair twice a week and it won’t look greasy if I keep up this frequency. After about 4-5 days my hair starts to look like it needs a wash, but it might be different for others.

  130. Indigo9988 Avatar

We’re all different, and our bodies need different things.

I need to shower every single day, and I live in a cold climate. If I’m living somewhere hot and humid, twice a day.

But curly hair doesn’t do well if you wash it every single day. I wash my hair once a week.

  131. mrspillins Avatar

I shower twice a day, including my hair. I do lots of exercise and I have a cleaning job that leaves me filthy. However, even on days I don’t do these things, I still like to be clean in the morning and before bed. My hair isn’t dry at all from all the washing. It seems to cope with it perfectly fine.

  132. Lovesbooks_87 Avatar

I take a body shower daily and only wash my hair in an everything shower once a week. I was washing my hair daily so I had to train my hair and figure out what worked for me to go a week without shampooing. My hair was very dry and unhealthy so I wanted to prioritize healthy hair.

I work out and get very sweaty 3-4 times a week and on those days I use a good dry shampoo spray made for post workouts- bumble and bumble has a good one. Or sometimes I rinse out the sweat more or less and only apply conditioner. I hate the feeling of greasy dirty hair so this is what works for me.

Everyone is different though so don’t feel like your way is wrong. Do what you have to do for yourself!

  133. SheiB123 Avatar

Every body is different. Do what works for YOU and ignore other people…they aren’t changing what they do because you think what they do is odd, are they?

  134. cerulean_418 Avatar

Yes, I think it may be a cultural thing for me (2nd gen Latina). My parents were never superficial or image focused but they always drilled in us that we should never go out into public unshowered and should try our best to at least be groomed. They were always corralling us kids into the shower at least once a day and made sure we scrubbed lol. Maybe it’s the habit that was drilled into me, but my daily shower just helps me feel more comfortable. Even if you’re not showering I feel like you should still be washing your pits, bits, neck and feet with a clean washcloth daily.
