TL;DR: There’s no plot for most of the show, there’s no stakes until episode 7, the entire show feels more like a documentary where they sometimes do interesting things that have no consequences.
I won’t spoil anything here, but I will mention characters and events in an out-of-context way.
Don’t get me wrong, the acting and visuals are amazing, and the concept is obviously enough to carry the first episode. It isn’t enough to carry 6 episodes however. Until episode 7, the plot is non-existent, sometimes it sparks up, but then they throw out that version and do something else, like with Petey, or with Reghabi.
In Episode 7, we finally get information that raises the stakes of everything, why couldn’t we get this information in episode 2 or 3? This would make everything so much more awkward and frustratingly awesome. It would also spice up the eventless episodes 2 and 3.
The outies have nothing to do all season except drop lore about their lives and fill up time. Nothing really connects to what ends up to be the plot. The innies do actually get a plot in episode 8 (or if it was 7), but that’s too late, they should have established their goal much earlier and had their whole point of roaming around be to search for a way to accomplish that goal. This would also make the card reveal feel much cooler in episode 7, it’s not just a random item that they decide to use, it’s an actual god-given solution to what they have wanted all along.
I have no complaints about most of the innies time inside, it’s really cool and has so many interesting reveals, subplots and lore drops. and like I hinted, I obviously feel that the last 3 episodes are great, peak televison right there. Episode 9 is probably the best episode of television I’ve ever seen, i was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Sadly though, that’s just the 3 last episodes, it is by no means a perfect season as people say.
TL;DR: There’s no plot for most of the show, there’s no stakes until episode 7, the entire show feels more like a documentary where they sometimes do interesting things that have no consequences.

“and the concept is obviously enough to carry the first episode. It isn’t enough to carry 6 episodes however”
If someone doesn’t like episodes 1-6 and is still watching, they must really like the concept. Main strength of the show is simply the concept IMO, it’s great enough to keep you hooked, and it outlines it all very well in the first episode.
bro never heard of ‘build up’, I mean if you didn’t drop it after first several episodes then you must’ve like it enough to keep watching no ? the previous episodes have done their job to hook you in.
also the creators are probably contractually obligated to produce certain number of episodes so they have to focus a lot on the build up, introducing characters and developing them before the main conflict arise.
but yeah I can see how the show can be boring for some…
I don’t wanna read your whole post, just to avoid spoilers. But I just finished episode 3 and I feel like the show has completely grabbed me already.
His boss is the neighbor and she doesn’t sever when she goes into work? I wanna find out more about that.
Is Petey actually dead? What information did he leave behind? Who is calling the cellphones?
How is “outie” Helly going to react to her wrist injury? It was a pretty deep cut. If I was her outie. I’d be concerned.
Mark definitely seems to be unraveling. I’m very interested in seeing where that goes.
That’s amongst other things. Long story short, I disagree. The show is fully laying the groundwork for the story ahead. I’m loving it so far!
I am going to strongly disagree, I felt severance had a great opener, just the intro sequence alone is an amazing hook.
And while I don’t feel as strongly about other episodes not mentioned I felt that the mystery storytelling was decently paced and interesting.
I have far more issues with certain episodes in the second season.
It’s like Lost you have to watch an entire season to reveal 5 percent of the plot. After finishing the series you got about 30 percent but you have more questions than you did in the beginning.
There’s no way someone is complaining about the pacing of this show. FFS hellys suicide attempt woulda been the season finale of some shows
Completely agreed. The show had a weak season 1 until episode 7. They call it a “slow burn thriller” but honestly when you put it that way it shines light on the issue. They give us Petey and Reghabi and then just do nothing about it. Like they weren’t sure where they wanted to take it and were toying with ideas.
Lots of people like to meat ride new, exciting things. While the show is good, overall, it definitely could have had stronger, less aimless start.
