it’s weird to explain but every now and then, I’ll be reading something, either on my phone or a book, or when I’m at work etc everything suddenly seems so far away, or smaller. for example, I’ll be looking at my phone close to me, but it feels like it’s across the room, what could it be and what could cause it ðŸ˜

It’s probably something more mundane but there’s a chance you could have Micropsia which causes affected individuals to perceive objects as being smaller or more distant than they actually are
It sounds like you’re describing vertigo. Vertigo can come in different ways, like a sudden sensation of spinning, but it can also suddenly affect your sense of depth in weird ways. It is a medical symptom, though, so if you are experiencing it often it may be something to consult with a doctor.
Do you suffer from migraines? There is a condition known as Dysmetropsia, or “Alice in Wonderland” syndrome that can impact on the brains processing of information related to perception. It has been found in association with migraines or other brain conditions.Â
One condition I’m familiar with that causes this is AIWS, or alice in wonderland syndrome, and I have it myself.
When I meditate doing concentration meditation it has a similar effect. To me what you’re experiencing is the narrow focus from the book/ phone activity carrying on.
I used to experience this periodically as a child, especially if I stayed up late and had been playing video games for a few hours. I had totally forgotten about it. What a bizarre sensation.
I don’t think /r/explainlikeimfive is the place to ask specific questions about your eye health. Maybe see an optometrist?
I think you are simply describing tunnel vision.
It can often be triggered by intense focus on something as your brain and eyes are both engaged with something in the center of your vision or close to your face and your brain will start to ignore things in the corner of your eyes. When you readjust to your surroundings, there is a brief moment where your brain has trouble incorporating your peripheral vision back into “the big picture” and the objects in your center vision can suddenly become less pronounced and seem to get smaller.
This also can happen when you are driving for long periods of time. The road will often start to appear larger as you focus on it more intently, then when you try to shift to something outside the road, the road will suddenly narrow and elongate.
Alice in wonderland syndrome. Rare, but you can google it and will find exactly what you ecperience.
I don’t know what else to say to get the word count, it really os just as easy as that
