I’m interested in a certain mentor program in my field which matches mentors and mentees.
Just wondering, what comes from this relationship, and what do you talk about and do together.
Personally, I’m looking for someone to network with- meet the mentor and (hopefully) their contacts and find out if I can be of help to them, like being some kind of intern or research assistant.
Not sure if mentorships are meant for that though.

At what stage of your career? Are you an undergrad? Post doc? Assistant professor?
Networking comes with mentorship, but these kinds of mentorship opportunities are more about learning the career path and navigating the process. Engage earnestly with your mentor without expecting or wanting a job or internship and opportunities will come. Ask them thoughtful questions about their experiences, their career path, their struggles and successes, and share openly with them.
One of the weirdest parts of the shift from undergrad to grad school is that there generally is a big professional barrier between professors and students in undergrad and in grad school, the barrier comes down a lot and you need to make genuine connections with people way more experienced and established than you.
