Why doesn’t everyone just sit until your row is clear to depart the airplane?

r/

The ignorance……plane lands and then everyone clogs the isles. We’re all eager to get off the plane and you’re now standing looking foolish

I’ve always wondered this too!! It’s pointless, like we’re going to have to wait another 10+ minutes to move anyway. What’s the point in standing butt to face for so long when you can sit down and look forward to getting off of the plane instead

  2. TastySpermDispenser2 Avatar

You are trying to be fast as consideration for everyone else.

A plane can have 600 people on it. If you burn 5 extra seconds waiting for each person to realize it’s their turn and stand, the last guy on the plane is there for an extra hour. The fastest way to deplane is if everyone is locked and loaded like an assembly line, not with extra random spaces.

  3. AceAlpinaut Avatar

My long legs just spent hours cramped in those tiny seats. I’ll stand as soon as I can and cherish stretching my legs.

  4. tiggylizzy Avatar

Sometimes after a 6 hour flight. I really want to stand

  5. refugefirstmate Avatar

Clearly you don’t have sciatica or arthritis.

  6. tiggylizzy Avatar

Sometimes after a 6 hour flight. I really want to stand. I know I’m not going anywhere. Usually I’m in the middle seat with my husband in the isle and Im short so I don’t hunch over but I’ll lean away from the window seat person

  7. bad--juju Avatar

My legs are numb from sitting so long. I need to stand

  8. BaylisAscaris Avatar

The real question is why we board front to back.

  9. cjcoake Avatar

I have long legs and lower back pain. The moment I can stretch out, I will.

  10. cjcoake Avatar

Kinda guessing that everyone wondering about this also thinks it’s okay to recline their seats without checking to see if the person behind them is tall.

  11. PokemonLv10 Avatar

I just sat on my ass for like 6 hours

I want and probably need to stand, prolonged sitting is no good

  12. clarkcox3 Avatar

Sitting for hours hurts. Standing as soon as possible helps.

  13. KyleCAV Avatar

Stretch and GTFO as fast a possible.

  14. earthgarden Avatar

A lot of people stand because of leg cramps (old people type-sh!t, if you’re over 50 and raggedy you know)

Now why they clog the aisles, IDK. But I’m gonna stand up soon as I can to shake out my legs

  15. ask-me-about-my-cats Avatar

My legs hurt, I want to stand.

  16. likeusontweeters Avatar

Because we live in a culture of “me first”.

  17. redhandsblackfuture Avatar

I’m almost 6 and a half feet tall I’m not staying in the seat longer than I need to

  18. notade50 Avatar

To ease the pain from sitting so long. I’m only 5’3 so I don’t reach the top anyway. I’m not bothering anybody.

  19. kinkade Avatar

Do you think it would be quicker if people stayed sitting down and didn’t get their bags ready from the overhead locker?

  20. corndog2021 Avatar

I’m not in a rush to get off the plane, my legs are falling asleep from the uncomfortable ass seats and I need some space to stretch. I’ll wait as long as is needed as long as I can get some circulation back.

Feel like that answer should be fairly obvious if you give it a second or two of thought.

  21. Mr_Coa Avatar

Who knows but I’m good just sitting down at the window waiting till everyone goes

  22. roy-dam-mercer Avatar

My ass hurts after sitting 3 hours on those minimally padded seats. I’m standing up and I DGAF if I “look foolish.”

  23. harrisgunther Avatar

Because some people are just more important than you, and they know it! /s

  24. facialscanbefatal Avatar

I’m short and petite enough to stand in front of my seat under the overheard luggage (not in the row), but because I’m short it means my legs haven’t been touching ground the entire flight, which hurts my back. So yeah the second I can stand, and I’m not actually in anyone’s way, I’m standing.

  25. ePlayablez Avatar

It is a little cringeworthy seeing people that do this. But is is exponentially more cringeworthy seeing the loads of influencers and other folks constantly calling aforementioned people out thinking they’re better because they can “be patient” and sit for an extra 20 min. There are a multitude of reasons why someone may want to do this:

    1. They have a tight connection and getting off the plane a minute early can be the difference between them making or missing their flight.
    2. Their luggage is a few seats back so it’s either they get up quickly to get it or they have to wait for the entire plane to get off before getting their bag.
    3. They have back problems.
    4. They have a meeting to catch.

Obviously, the majority of these people are just a little too trigger-happy but I think best to just let them be.

  26. gigashadowwolf Avatar

There are a lot of reasons but the main reason is herd mentality.

Enough people stand up and try to get off first for legit reasons (eg connecting flight, rushing to a meeting, have to go to the bathroom, legs need stretching) that it triggers a response in the rest of our lizard brains.

We FEEL their anxiety and their rush to get off the plane and our brains unconsciously feel that same anxiety and flight response. We don’t want to be the ones left behind.

  27. TheGriz05 Avatar

I stand up, one leg in the aisle so I don’t get someone’s ass in my face. I’ve also had the people rush up from the back, so I try to stop those people unless they have a flight to catch.

  28. Serebriany Avatar

I usually stand because I’m tired of sitting, but I also have no intention of getting involved in the mess in the aisle and just want to stand and give my butt a break. I’m usually among the last to deplane because that whole aisle thing annoys me—stuff’s not going to move more quickly just because people are jammed together like sardines.

  29. SoSoDave Avatar

I am almost always the last guy off the plane.

  30. dallassoxfan Avatar

6 foot 2, bad back, and I want to put my headphones neatly back while it isn’t crazy and I can access my bag.

But hey, let me know the next time you are behind me and I’ll do all that arranging when it is my turn to stand up. I’m sure you won’t mind me getting out my headphones case, neatly putting the cord back in the pocket, and putting the case back in the inside zippered pocket. After all, you are better than me like that.

  31. Steel_Man23 Avatar

Because you have people that are boarding group 1 that put their carry-on bags at the front and then they sit in the back. I’ve watched so many people do this and it’s confused me each time like, “oh do you have a short connecting flight you have to catch?”

  32. unknownpoltroon Avatar

Because I want to get up enough to get my shit out of the overhead and out from under the seat so I am already standing so I can leave quick since i have 20 minutes to make my next flight and the idiots in front of me hold up the line by not doing the same.

  33. ellieD Avatar

    Because I have mild claustrophobia.

If the plane isn’t moving, I need to stand up.

I’m 5’7” and 130lbs, so I don’t take up too much space, but I sit on the isle so I won’t be trapped.

  34. checker280 Avatar

This is me. I sit until everyone is gone. No dirty looks while I retrieve my luggage. No jockeying for position all the way out of the airport

  35. Quinocco Avatar

    How does this hurt you?

  36. MsJenX Avatar

Opportunity. If they can find an opportunity to one-up everyone else they will. Also, sometimes their carryon luggage is not places near their seat and they want to get to it before someone else takes it I think.

  37. ObvsThrowaway5120 Avatar

I get the aisle seat and do this sometimes if I have a tight transfer to catch. Happened a few times where I literally have to book it off the plane to catch my next flight.

  38. alex_744 Avatar

People might have connections to make, I personally have missed a connection due to waiting for other passengers to disembark. It won’t happen again; next time I will be one of those standing up.

Also, some people end up with their carry on luggage in another part of the aircraft. It happens too often that somebody takes your luggage (usually by mistake because they’re tired and stressed) that I will always ensure I get to mine as soon as possible or at least have it in my sight.

  39. jp112078 Avatar

I’m only trying to get off first on an international flight. Clearing customs/immigration on a plane of 350 people with one immigration agent is horrific. I’m fine flying coach anywhere in the US, but go business internationally and get out first.

  40. shadesof3 Avatar

the worst is when the pilot announce a couple minutes before landing that there are a few passengers on board with tight connecting flights and ask for everyone to remain seated so those people can get off. Then everyone still stands up and people start getting into unnecessary shouting matches. I’ve never once seen the whole plane listen to those warnings.

  41. Lepmuru Avatar

If I have an hour to reach my connecting flight and the plane already landed 20 minutes late, I will not wait for a bunch of people who are not in a hurry and move as slowly as can be, risking to miss my next flight.

If I’m at my final destination, I’ll gladly wait in my seat for everyone in a hurry to leave before I move.

  42. jackfaire Avatar

Unless I absolutely have very little time to make my connecting flight I’ve always waited for the plane to be empty to deboard unless I’m already near the front. Let everyone else clog the aisles and squish each other.

  43. 3141592652 Avatar

Other thing I wonder is why people shove their bags in the overhead and take up all the space somehow. Like the people who need to park their big ass trucks in 2 spaces.

  44. KingKhram Avatar

Because I would like to get up and stretch my legs. If you want to sit for longer and look foolish, then that’s up to you

  45. notreallylucy Avatar

I want to get my bag down and have it in hand when my turn comes. I don’t want to be the dipshit that waits until it’s her turn to start gathering up her stuff and make people wait on me.

  46. oddMahnsta Avatar

I don’t mind everyone standing immediately they gotta stretch i get it. But it’s incredibly shitty if the line starts moving and the people behind my aisle try to push ahead of me and don’t allow me to get into the line to get out. Happened when i traveled to India, less in America.

  47. ChicagoMay Avatar

I need to stand after sitting for a long time. If I don’t, it’ll be harder and slower to get off the plane when it is my turn because my legs and hips need a moment to remember how to function. I usually get up, get my stuff on my seat and then stand where my seat is though, not in the aisle.

  48. RusticSurgery Avatar

It’s because some put their carry on luggage In OHB not near them

  49. BeefSkillet19 Avatar

You may have just one flight in a day, but others may have several. The tailbone can only take so much punishment.

  50. D3TH82 Avatar

So part of it for me is, I don’t like to make people wait for me, and I also don’t like the pressure of feeling rushed, so I hope up while people are in the isle and grab my bags.

  51. xadrus1799 Avatar

Why doesn’t everyone just hold there shares while things aren’t going well and wait until things are better?

  52. imTru Avatar

I never have any problems getting off a plane with people standing or not. It’s usually the short people who put their luggage overhead and have a hard time getting it out that blocks the aisle.

  53. SprinklesMore8471 Avatar

The same reason why we don’t all get along while driving. Some of us are just a little more important than others.

  54. NoHat2957 Avatar

I think a lot of these people have seen “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and it offers the rare opportunity for them to role play their hero without seemingly taking the piss out of disabled people.

Sure, having the overhead luggage container squashing the back of your head is uncomfortable, but how often do you get the chance to adopt a pose that suggests how much more important time is for you, than the plebs still sitting down, while paradoxically looking exceedingly dumb?

Besides, reaching the bag carousel 8 minutes before the bags start loading is a way better experience than arriving 6 minutes before the bags start loading.

  55. HotTopicMallRat Avatar

    Can I just stretch dude?

  56. tTomalicious Avatar

Some people want/need to stand because sitting in cramped airplane seats with no leg room is uncomfortable and can be painful.

Whether I am sitting or standing, I am waiting.
I don’t think I look foolish and couldn’t be bothered if anyone around me thinks I do. Some of them are in pajamas.

  57. Wtyiuy123 Avatar

I stand quickly because I’m 6’7 and wanna stretch my legs. But mostly so I can block the aisle so that people get off in order.

  58. biglongtimelurk Avatar

Bc I’m 6’2 and tired of having my legs in my abdomen.

  59. its_all_4_lulz Avatar

I always do, but then I kind of get looks from people in front of my know I’m going to take longer to move. It seems like a lose lose, fuck everyone.

  60. Bathhouse-Barry Avatar

Depending on how long the journey was, I’d probably just want to stand up to stretch my legs but I would agree.

  61. Sdbrown099 Avatar

I’m over 6 feet tall with a couple of knee surgeries… it’s nice to get up and stretch it out

  62. Jefeboy Avatar

Really, really dumb take. People need to stretch their legs after being crammed into those horrible seats for so long.

  63. mattycbro Avatar

Let me guess you’re under 6 feet tall lol

  64. Constant_System2298 Avatar

Because have you ever had to connect onto another flight and the person in front of you is reluctantly flying back home to go back to their 9-5 there is different type of urgency in those people.

  65. cupcaeks Avatar

Stand if you want, but keep out of my personal space if you have to do it. And don’t try to jump the line when exiting.

  66. VixenTraffic Avatar
  67. cohrt Avatar

Cause I’m 6 foot 3 and my knees have been jammed into the seat in front of me for hours.

  68. mladyhawke Avatar

I step into the aisle so people don’t run ahead and then I stand there waiting because I’m sick of sitting
