Its about the code. He’d kill either way. This way he gets the excuse of righteousness.

Dexter is a terrible example of sociopathy because he very clearly does have strong emotional bonds to family and his step kids and an emotional understanding of other people as fully realized individuals who deserve compassion. He kills bad people because deep down, he’s a decent person who was allowed and encouraged to give in to his fucked up urges instead of getting therapy and treatment.

In fairness to the character, if he were as fucked up as the show wants you to think he is, we wouldn’t root for him.

So instead they just gave a guy pretty standard values and turned his impulse control down when the plot demands it.

    A bit of both.

Dexter struggles a lot with what he is.

He won’t feel guilty about killing an innocent person (like he did,b at least twice), but he knows it’s not a good thing and he would avoid.

Dexter probably won’t kill any innocent person even if he was sure he would not get caught.

He stayed years without killing after the events of the main show and only killed someone who was a bad person.

I red the first few books and they’re a lot different, in them the only reason he doesn’t kill innocent people “on purpose” is because Harry taught him it would make him more likely to get caught. He has no emotional attachment to anyone and only uses people to get things or achieve goals.

Dexter’s ghost dad : “whats the first rule, Dexter?. “Never kill an innocent?”. “No, Dexter. The first rule is, don’t get caught”.

And that’s how the show went. He killed multiple innocent people.
