food is converted into biological energy,
he is currently only digital/electric energy
(idk if blood is an expression of being a user but i doubt its a biological function/maybe expression of cellular program?)
So “eating” a program that gives him energy wouldnt be far fetched
But he is shown in the first movie to do some crazy hacks (redirect an energy flow and branch it), and since he built the engine they are living in his ability to manipulate it would be godly- if countered by CLU who equally helped build it
I don’t think people are made of meat while they’re inside the mainframe. I think they’re converted into a computer program. So I guess he was eating electricity or CPU time or something like that.

Same thing he’s dressing with, touching, speaking to and breathing. Data.
Code that he had meticulously crafted into the semblance of asparagus.
And that power-liquid that sustained him and everyone else back in the Incom grid.
