To me personally, machismo is the idea of excessive male dominance and toughness, usually involving the subjugation of women. It implies male superiority and is typically accompanied by a repression of emotion. Many now oppose that in order to build the equal gender roles.
“”Machismo” in Spanish or Portuguese is normally translated as sexism or misogyny.
But, “machismo”, when said in English by the american media, means the sexist practices committed by latinamerican men. In the USA media, it’s mostly used to differentiate the white “sexism” from the Latin sexism, suggedting that patterns of discrimination against women and toxic masculinity when practiced by Latinos are caused not by genders structures but by the cultural background, taken as more primitive, conservative and violent than the one from white Americans.
For me is just “A set of attittudes who stablish a certain form of superiority of men against women.” A male version of Sexism. While i use “Hembrism” to define the contrary.
I dont think that a ideology with this characteristics exist, but as an attitude, you can find it in many, many things.
Sexism is the neutral form of the concept: “The notion that both sexes are different and because of that, one is superior to other”.
Of course feminist had another framework to understand this concepts, but i reject feminist framework from the beginning.
Machismo is when a guy refuses to carry an umbrella in a hurricane because “real men get wet,” spends three hours explaining spark plugs to someone who didn’t ask, and dies on a hill defending his right to barbecue shirtless even during a medical emergency.
It’s basically testosterone cosplay performed with loud confidence and quiet insecurity. A flex that’s constantly one beer away from a pulled hamstring.
“Machismo” basically means “masculine pride”. When a man wants to be tough and never show any weakness or emotion or anything that is perceived to be unmanly or feminine. That’s Machismo.
That is basically a term that is used to diminish the value a man can bring to society for being a man. Like when a man makes a lot of money and marries a woman who stays at home, it is “machismo”.
Macho used to mean a mature male(the good and the bad, and everything in between) back in the day, but over time it has come to represent on the bad, toxic masculinity.

Anything that feminists don’t like but can’t explain why

The idea that men are better than women and should be in control.

Sexism, believing that being a man makes you superior to women. Capable and deserving of more.

Interestingly it seems that “machismo” in Mexico means not only “sexism”; here in Chile it is just “sexism” without any other connotations.
