If I want become a Detective do I have to be a Police Officer for a certain number of years in all the states?

    A sworn detective, yes, you’ll need to be on patrol first.

    Larger agencies sometimes have non-sworn crime scene investigators, but they’re typically not doing anything outside of forensic work on scene.

    Not LE yet, but specifically looking to move into investigations if I’m cut out for it. Everything I’ve heard/read/seen reinforces that any decent detective needs to be an excellent patrol officer.

    Personally, I’d rather learn how to write a perfect report or warrant on a DUI than a double homicide anyway.
