Post WW2 were there a lot of bodies just laying around and how did the “clean up”process look and how long could bodies remain?

r/

I understand in saying medieval times they had people who would scavenge the bodies for weapons but I can’t imagine in WW2 a highly mobile war they cleaned as they go.

Where there dedicated cleaning crews or was it all sorted post war? Did civilians take the brunt of clean up?
