For my local department, not all applicants will take a polygraph. My question is, what makes someone need to take one? We have a questionnaire that we need to fill out that contains all the usual questions like have you ever stolen something, have you ever done drugs etc., I was thinking maybe during the interview if you say something that contradicts the questionnaire, that will elicit a polygraph? Or maybe if there’s an inconsistency from the background check?
What makes someone need a polygraph? (For recruitment)

More than likely the recruit has an acceptable exception within a pre-defined timeframe that will satisfy the polygraph requirement. As an example: they’re already a certified officer and took one within the past year, or they’re ETSing from the military and held a security clearance that had a polygraph/CVSA, etc.
