DAE feel like you’re dying when you don’t get enough sleep?

r/

I feel like I am the only person on planet earth who feels this way. I will legitimately feel like I am either about to have a panic attack or like my body is physically legitimately shutting down and dying if I didn’t get enough sleep the night before (8-9 hours). If I have 7 or less, it’s a wrap, I’m dead. And it’s not like “oh I’m tireddd” kinda dead it’s like I’m convinced I’m on the verge of death. Then after a nap or the next day I’m fine.

I know everyone else “brags” about how little sleep they get and how they run on coffee, etc. etc. everyone’s so busy yeah WHATEVER. Good for you. I basically diagnosed myself with mental disorders when I was tired just bc I only had 6 hours of sleep. And if I got 8-9 hours but the quality of it was bad, it’s a wrap as well. I just want to know if there’s anyone out there who feels this way bc I’ve only ever come across people who are the opposite and say “I thrive off 5-6 hours” blah blah blah whatever I just know I can’t be the only one!

Yeah, like a racing heart, severe muscle weakness, body just feels like it’s falling apart, stuff like that. I don’t know if there’s anything that can be done about it or not, or if it is common or not

  2. tooshy2usemyrealname Avatar

I also lose every drop of common sense, friendliness, and patience in my body

  3. kayidontcare Avatar

this is me. it’s exhausting, literally lol. i have lost jobs because of it. ive tried all the vitamins and everything, im just a sleepy person i guess. also i wish that having a cup of coffee could magically fix it. i have never understood how its so common for people to drink coffee to wake up because it doesn’t do anything to me besides taste good😭

  4. tmedwar3 Avatar

Shit, is this why I have panic attacks that I’m dying every single day?

  5. annasbananas_ Avatar

100% I am the same way. Feel like my body is shutting down quite literally lol.

  6. Hppysadgrl Avatar

Same here!! People think I’m being dramatic but I will feel so physically ill if I don’t get enough sleep. I’m terrified of having a baby because of this 😅

  7. Dishy8228 Avatar

Yes and I have to wake up at 4:30am so bed at 8 and I refuse to go to anything that starts later than 5. Still trying to get some people to understand that I absolutely CANNOT have a guaranteed horrible day the next day if I don’t get enough sleep. Anxiety central.

  8. AbesOddysleep Avatar

It was worse for me before I officially knew I had sleep apnea. Now some nights I’ll get less than 6 hours of sleep but I’m able to power through the day a lot better. I also won’t have headaches from lack of sleep as often as I used to.

  9. blenneman05 Avatar

If I don’t get my 8 hours of sleep, and I start to have auditory hallucinations, my stomach is upset and my rage level goes up

Why have the DAE posts been EXACTLY on the tee to my life. I had a panic attack last week but 2 daus ago i was really tired because i keep going to sleep at like 2/3am when i need to wakeup at 730 to WFH. Throughtout the day i was anxious and i had said, ‘am i anxious/panicking OR am i just fighting sleep?…’ especially as i took a melatonin that night prior. I couldn’t sleep as i had to work ofc but took a 3 hr nap after work and my brain felt anew again after with no panicking & no anxiety. Ill have to start practicing going to sleep early anyway as were RTOing but i have this too. Any emotions/bodily changed unchecked can lead to anxiety for me, unfortunately….🙄

I think it’s part of being female, men don’t seem to need as much sleep

  12. Sonofabiscuit26 Avatar

Yeah… Pretty much. That’s me when I don’t sleep well, I get pretty grumpy 🤬

  13. Sad_Analyst_5209 Avatar

I had a 10 hour/four day job that started at 6:00am and had a long commute. I had to get up a 4:00am. I would sleep in on the week ends. Got to where I could only get to sleep at midnight and then I would wake up at having a panic attack. Eventually did make me crazy ruined my health. I could not work and was under a doctors care for two years before I got SSDI, I was 58.

  14. determinedpeach Avatar

Yes 100%. If I don’t get enough sleep, my mental health tanks. It makes every moment feel like suffering to get through

  15. Blu8674 Avatar

YES YES YES!!! Nobody gets it. Even when they think they do. I feel like I’m not getting enough oxygen, physically, and my HR is always higher, and get EXHAUSTED doing anything, like just moving. Mentally? Oh my god, I can get suicidal if it’s really bad. My cognition is outta the window. The difference is terrifying once I get good 10 hours of sleep. I feel human and like life is worth living. It’s like I’m handed two completely different lives depending on my sleep. I’ve seen so many doctors and done a sleep test and still. I could go on and on this has been THE main issue in my life for 5+ years. Thanks for making me feel less alone (I hope I did too).

This started happening when I hit 23, but I also Hashimoto’s.

I’ve always been a night owl, and I can never fall asleep until late. Before it was never a problem. I could function on four or two hours of sleep easily. I could even pull all nighters and show up to school or work the next day.

Randomly it all just caught up to me. If I don’t get more than four hours of sleep, I will be literally sick to my stomach.

My dad picked a 5:30 AM flight once and we had to pull over two times so I could throw up. My friend and I signed up for a 5K that was an hour away from my house so I had to get up early. I couldn’t sleep the night before, and same thing my friend had to pull over so I could throw up.

I had an 8 AM class last semester, and I pulled an all nighter before my final, which was a mistake but at least I did good on it 😂

I was gagging the entire car ride to my college.

    It’s so crazy.

  17. angelsunnie Avatar

This is me! I lived with a close friend and she could tell how much sleep I got. If I had under 7 hours, I’d be unable to do the most basic things and so so anxious. I couldn’t enjoy anything. I feel just so on edge and like my whole day is ruined. I haven’t seen other people that get so severely affected by it. I will add, hangovers seem to affect me way worse than the average person too. I wonder if it’s because of how alcohol affects our sleep.

  18. prettyplutoo Avatar

Idk about this, but I do get extremely emotional when I don’t sleep (which makes sense duh) and I feel like I have an issue as well: no matter when I go to bed, what I do during the day, what I eat, my body will naturally just want to sleep for 11+ hours straight.. it can’t be normal. If I get 6 hours or less, I feel like shit and I feel so weak. I am a night owl, but even on a normal sleep schedule I will sleep the entire day, for an ungodly amount of time. Unless I have alarms/somewhere I need to be such as work lol. I feel so lazy but my body just feels so worn down and I’m just so damn tired all the time even if I sleep 11+ hours

  19. Blacklungzmatter Avatar

I am a total bitch. There is a huge possibility that I will cry about something tribal that happens. If I’m really racking up sleep debt, I may get some really dark life ending ideas

  20. KingSewage Avatar

Yeah totally. Talked to my doctor about it, turns out I have MS 😅

  21. DoqHolliday Avatar

No, but after quitting drinking and weed about two months ago, it’s def as close to hungover as I feel anymore.

So, yes I guess, insofar as being crazy hungover felt like being near death.

    Good chat!

  22. BaconFairy Avatar

Yes. Even with sleep apnea and cpap. I can’t function like other people if I don’t get the right amount if sleep. Coffee never wakes me up like other people.
I can sleep a lot though.
I don’t know how different we are but no one seems to believe how bad it can be.
It took me 20 yrs just to get migraines diagnosed, I don’t think I would be able to get this solved.

  23. sillybilly8102 Avatar

Yes. But not always. If I wake up and am so tired that “my heart feels tired,” that’s when I seriously consider skipping school/work. Like, I would physically not make it through the day if I went in. If I do go in, I’m gonna need to come out in a few hours and go back to bed. No one knows what I mean when I say that my heart feels tired, though.

  24. hourglass_nebula Avatar

Me. And I can’t fall asleep til late, but I have a job that starts at 9 am. I also work an hour an a half away from where I live, so every day that I have work, I have to take a 7 am road trip, then run around all day, and also feel like I am dying the entire time.

  25. SentientToaster Avatar

Yes, but in my case it’s like 7+ hours is all the same "tier", 6 hours I feel somewhat off, but 5 or less I feel like things are seriously and obviously wrong

  26. k00lkat666 Avatar

Yes. I feel like I could keel over at any moment. Anything less than 7 hours requires so much effort on my part to even stay upright and it feels like I might as well have just not slept at all.

  27. OkResearcher8449 Avatar

I just lose my grip on reality pretty quickly. But I’m always sick and feeling like I’m dying. I have health issues lol

  28. the_raccoon_ Avatar

You should try having 1 hour or 0 hours of sleep ….

  29. Sn0rkbaby Avatar

I literally get a fever and flu like symptoms when I miss even a little sleep or am up too late

  30. CuteCanary Avatar

Yep panic attacks or I am unreasonably angry at everything. Like because I had bad sleep I am mad but don’t know how to express it

  31. squabidoo Avatar

    YES and nobody understands.

  32. that_norwegian_guy Avatar

I’ve never died, so I wouldn’t know what that feels like. But yes, I do get very tired when I haven’t had enough sleep.

  33. PuebloDog Avatar

I frequently experience this and doing everything I can to hack the problem. I have had so many tests, and my sleep is a roller coaster. My experience with Western docs is they just want to give you a pill. I’m working with a team of naturopaths right now and am awaiting a discussion around the results of my Dutch test to look at cortisol and testosterone. I strongly recommend a naturopathic doctor to talk to you about this because it could be a variety of things. Meanwhile the one thing that has helped my resilience, despite not sleeping as much as I would like it very high-quality fish oil.

  34. Alexa302 Avatar

Didn’t get enough sleep last night and I’ve got pressure in my head and my eyes hurt.

  35. shelivesonlovestrt Avatar

I 100% feel this way. It makes me anxious but I know it passes eventually. But yeah, hard relate. I feel like breathing is harder

  36. uela7 Avatar

    Yes yes yesss

  37. doniameche_2098 Avatar

Have you been to a doctor about this?

  38. godcomplex36 Avatar

Ask your dr for a sleep study. You likely have sleep apnea. Getting on a cpap will eliminate those symptoms and you can get by with shorter sleeps

  39. DeepSubmerge Avatar

I used to feel like this until I was diagnosed with and treated for sleep apnea. I’m not saying that’s what you have, but feeling like you do is not normal. I thought it was and now I know it isn’t.

Document symptoms with date, hours of sleep, what you ate or drank before bed, if you wake up at all during the night, etc. and talk to your doctor!

  40. Ryanopuffs Avatar

The panic attack feeling is so real. I get scared of my own body when I don’t get enough sleep. I feel straight sick

  41. edskitten Avatar

    Get a sleep study.

  42. ScreamingLightspeed Avatar

Not bragging about it but I genuinely feel better on only 3 to 5 hours of sleep. Apparently sleep deprivation is an effective antidepressant for some people. Maybe that’s why: because it feels like the end is near lol

  43. my_metrocard Avatar

Because sleep deprivation causes cardiovascular problems

  44. jkmaddie Avatar

Yupp this happened to me the other day. I only got 4 or 5 hours of sleep and the entire day it was on and off heart racing, light headedness, and shortness of breath. I literally felt like I was going to have a heart attack and die. After getting a full night’s sleep I was fine lol.

  45. MILFinurhood Avatar

I turn into a monster. I hate everything and everybody.

  46. brau_miau Avatar

It’s not so extreme for me but I also need 9 hours of sleep and getting like 7 definitely doesn’t cut it. I feel like I have a lot less time than other adults around me. I’m only now at 29 starting to accept that I really can’t economize on sleep duration and quality unless I want my life to suck and to have even less useful and pleasant waking hours. I also have ADHD, don’t know if some other sleepy people do, and a night shift job (passive nights at a rehab center, which means I can sleep but only for like 6 hours, which for me feels like what I think 3 hours feel for "normal" people).

  47. Shark-socks Avatar

Anytime I don’t get enough sleep I feel like I’m going insane and almost want to take a grippy sock vacation bc of how bad my panic attacks are. Then I get a full nights rest and wake up fine the next day 😭

  48. Ambitious_Hold_5435 Avatar

Not dying, just like I want to die.
