“Hey guys my I just got my finger blown off, what should I do”. ” Hey guys I’m currently suffocating what do you guys recommend me doing” “My wife is currently passed out on the floor should I go no contact and file for divorce?”

For Americans, this can be a tremendous expense. If you don’t have insurance and live paycheck to paycheck, it’s food/rent vs a doctor’s visit. There’s basically no telling what the final total will be. Especially for ER visits. And even with insurance, there are ways it can still be an expense depending on the devil details of your plan and coverage, or lack thereof. It’s a gamble.
THANK YOU.
I work in emergency medicine. I appreciate this post 1000%.
ETA I understand there are potentially huge costs involved. But too many people take to Reddit or FB or Google for guidance and put their lives in danger when they truly need emergency care.
I would do anything I could to change the current system. It’s total bullshit.
They just was reassurance something isn’t horribly wrong even if it’s obvious
I have a Cadillac US health plan that was a minimal expense for the hospital and I still researched appendicitis for a week before I went in trying to convince myself it wasn’t.
Didn’t post on Reddit but maybe if I did, it wouldn’t have ruptured
Because it’s not “clear” to everyone.
Dont think iv seen these posts myself, but it could be the case that they’re in shock
You should see r/Cats. Constant.
“My cat vomited blood, what do I do?”
“My cat clearly has a infected puncture wound from fighting outside, is he ok”
GO TO THE VET
Avoiding the expense of a visit to the ER and hoping against hope that it’s not serious.
Sorry to ask, maybe this is in the wrong section, but, should you go to hospital if you have blood in your stool?
Not all the time.
Serious question.
Because in developing countries you have to pay for healthcare, and often people asking don’t need to worry that much and often don’t actually need to go to hospital.
It really annoys me when people post their dog or cat with hives all over or an infected wound and are like “do I need to take them to the vet?” OBVIOUSLY
Idk for clout?
This sub is filled with *definitelystupidquestions
But it’s the same as those AITAH or AIO posts where it’s like… “My partner has a second family, should I stay with them?” or “This person hits kids, should I stop them or ignore it?” asinine nonsense.
I’m trying really hard not bring up u/Smart_Calendar1874 ..
Oops, failed.
Because we are gullible and and love useless information.
I will always take redditers advice over a professional what do they know 🤢
I think people don’t realize that insurance comes with a number to call, usually a nurse triage line, to get direction on level of medical care, including where to go in-network near by. On private insurance it’s often a requirement to call before going to the ER if it’s not an “overt emergency”, and you’ll get charged a higher copay if you go and it turns out you didn’t need to, and didn’t call.
Not sure if they’re usually EMERGENCY medical questions. Usually there’s something that they’ve noticed and it’s a growing concern. But still within that realm of maybe, just maybe there’s an answer to this that doesn’t involve me spending a lot of money on medical expenses.
For the Nookie
I usually assume they can’t afford medical attention.
In the US, a trip to the ER can be a financially catastrophic experience, even if there’s nothing serious. Getting someone else’s opinion before you put yourself in debt for the next few years isn’t a bad idea.
US health care?
I think shock can be a big reason, alongside not wanting to seem like you’re overreacting. Even when we think it’s obvious that they need emergency help, the shock of an event can blur that line.
Working in a pharma lab, we were warned that panic is one of the biggest delay factors in getting an acid burn under a tap or being doused in washing solution, for example – and there were multiple acid burns within my lab where people had just hidden it and not gone to hospital, supposedly because they’d minimised the issue and ‘didn’t want to cause a fuss’.
Because they want confirmation that its nothing and a free pass to go back to just relaxing or whatever. Having to deal with A Thing™ is stressful, expensive, and anxiety-inducing, so a lot of people get flustered, freeze, and then really hope they can get out of doing something. Its kinda like an internal bystander effect.
I am a volunteer at a hospital. A man asked me to take him to medical billing. As we walked he told me his wife had been there for a long time before passing. He got a bill for over a million dollars.
Karma mining
Two options: a) they don’t know any better, or b) they are farming for karma.
While I do think some are legit questions, and due to healthcare costs people want some advice before going to a hospital and getting a $50,000 medical bill. I think the majority are attention seekers with no real emergency happening.
