What kind of job do you do, how much do you make a year, and do you feel like you live comfortably?

r/

I’m an American in Japan but I’ll go first! My salary equates to about $22k USD as an IB kindergarten teacher. Even though that’s super low by American standards (and honestly not amazing in Japan either), my husband and I live comfortably on our one and a half salaries. (He can only work part time here for now because of visa limitations)

I am a college student. I have 17k a year in income, I live in central Iowa, and I feel like I live comfortably. I got a decent apartment, a decent but old car, and a good job for a college student. Whatever cost of living crisis there is it doesn’t seem to bad in Iowa.

I make $50k ish doing typical office work stuff. Not a production grunt anymore but not a supervisor either. Do a lot of reporting and auditing of others work. The pay isn’t great but I tolerate it because it’s full remote. Dual income household, wife makes $65k ish. Don’t feel like we are hurting for cash. Have a small home.

I’m burnt out and pissed at myself for not going to college previously though so I’m taking pre reqs for a 2 year radiography program. Should be able to get to $100k+ fairly quickly after graduation with an MRI or CT cert

My average income years in America in multiple states was about $40k/year. My best year was $72k. It usually meant I could live in a rented room or sometimes my own place, but it depended on the city I lived in. Usually did warehouse jobs. But have done utility work as well.

I haven’t checked what my raise will be in September.

I make 135K in NYC as a project manager. My 2 bedroom apartment would get me a huge house in most other parts of the country. I live good enough that I don’t really budget monthly expenses and save about 15% of my paycheck.

34, M, NYC. Small business owner in New York. Base salary of $175k, keep another $10-50k after that based on annual profits after taxes and other expenses (small staff of 5, but we give great benefits and EOY bonuses plus 10% of profits to charity each year).

My husband makes $115K right now (surgical fellow at a hospital), so we’re around $290-350k combined at the moment. We live in Manhattan and work hard, but feel incredibly fortunate to be able to max out 401ks, keep a 7-9 month emergency fund, and still live what feels (to us, anyway) like a very good life. 2-3 weeks of vacations each year together, with additional time off for company closure between Christmas and new year’s and the first week of July.

I work in campus safety at a community college in Southern California (in a relatively low COL area, at least compared to major metro areas in the state like LA, SD or SF) making $52k/year in base wages, although OT often increases that by quite a bit (last year I made $83k gross for example after OT and small bonus). My wife also works for the college in a different department and makes $72k/year. We have no kids and are very fortunate to have little debt and a good housing arrangement renting a house from family for a fraction of the market value, so we’re living pretty comfortably overall.

We typically travel a few times a year (usually at least one or two shorter domestic US or Mexico trips ranging from a long weekend to a full week) along with a 2-3 week international trip every other year or so. Besides travel, I have a few fairly expensive hobbies (Star Wars charity costuming and going to all types of Halloween haunt events) and we generally don’t have to worry too much about entertainment spending. All that coupled with the fact that we don’t really spend much on luxury items like fancy cars or clothes means that we’re able to still put some money into savings/investment from every paycheck.

We have kind of similar situations! I am an IB middle school teacher in a suburb of Phoenix (Tempe.) I make 53k/yr and my partner works part-time as an airline gate agent making about 20k/yr. We sublease one of the rooms of our two-bedroom apartment out to a roommate and we don’t have a car. That might sound like a low living standard to a lot of Americans, but I’d say we’re pretty comfortable. Our apartment is new construction and definitely on the “luxury” side, and we take lots of vacations including one big international trip every year. We also live in a desirable, walkable neighborhood close to nightlife, events, and lots of good food options.

I live in Alaska and I’m 18, had a commercial fishing job last year but due to the worst year we’ve had in a while and terrible dock prices ( the amount we make per pound selling to the factories that purchase from us near the docks of towns) I was making around 650 bucks a week despite working 18 hour days 7 days a week( I would’ve had a 50 percent bonus for all of my checks added into my last check if I stayed the whole season but still didn’t think it was worth the hours and labor). I was a deckhand on a troller ( no they are not the same as trawlers we hate trawlers). Long story short I quit after two months because i felt terrible working damn near the hours and labor of a slave and getting paid sh*t for it while my captain does nothing but captain and handle mechanical issues but keeps 85-90% of our total earnings after we pay for expenses. Now I’m a housekeeper at the best hotel on my island making only 15$ an hour and I’m not even guaranteed 8 hour days, so far averaging 5 hour days, I’m currently on my 6th day of 10 consecutive work days. My boss says it should pick up to full days when we are full in the summer. I want a different job but due to lack of jobs on my island and then being the only place that would respond to me it’s all I could get. I’m thinking about working on a seining boat this summer though with a friend because they make more money than I did as a troller deckhand despite doing way less work because they have 4-5 people working efficiently on a boat and work shorter days, they also wait in lines of seiners sometimes just hanging out until it’s their turn to pull which I didn’t have the leisure of even getting a minute to stop on a troller. I would say I live comfortably because I still live with my mom and stepdad which actually isn’t frowned upon on my island because living costs in Alaska are terribly high and we have a housing shortage on my island. They thankfully aren’t making me pay rent and understanding of how hard it is to make it as an 18 year old here so they let me save my money. There’s also nothing to do here for youth, all of the kids with rich parents go off to college right away, some who stay manage to secure a decent labor job through family connections but a lot of kids sadly become addicts or alcoholics because they feel there’s nothing better to do. We will probably move down south eventually again to southern washington or central Oregon.

20 years later: I earn 80,000 dollars in the US. Still no car, and a bit under comfortable, but we do OK. (My wife from Japan earns about 60,000$)

I can travel a bit, have a newish car, and can take a few trips a year, but if I didn’t I would be saving more, but wouldn’t be as happy.

Obviously, I would love to make more money, but I am paid fairly and am absolutely very comfortable. Definitely glad to have this standard of living because a few years ago I was unemployed and living with my parents and very adrift.

My wife and I paid off our house in the Philippines last year, and I am quitting work for good in 3 days. I live comfortably.

Your income is likely to increase the older and more experience you have. When I was a 17 year old Private, I made $550 a month. Just keep working to gain experience, and it should come.

Is a master carpenter, welder, metal worker, liscenced in hazmat removal, mold removal, tons of other things, and all around “I can make that” person. He can tell you the difference between 2/3” and 1/2”. Can add fractions quicker than a calculated and can look at something and know if it’ll fit through the door. He’s a human Tetris game. He makes 250k a year. His body tells him he’s 50 but his brain says he’s still 25. He’s passed out on the couch while I write this. And today was a “light” day.

To put the dollar amount in perspective, I made about $37,000 at my previous job (also maintenance mechanic, but they made shampoo and skin creams, in a much dirtier and crappier facility), and did slightly better than break even.

My expenses have actually decreased, because my credit cards are finally paid off. All other expenses are the same. For the record, I already own a house. I also have the advantage of access to a good VA facility for healthcare.

If you want water you must pay much, much more for rent. It’s not even worth it if you ask me.

I live in decent comfort, my biggest expense is my heating fuel per winter, about $1200-1500 depending on how long winter lasts. I have one teen child and one adult child, the custody is super loose and neither of us pays the other child support. The only reason I bring it up is because they are my second biggest expense because I spoil them way too much lol.

When I was still single, I rented a small 1-bedroom apartment in a semi-sketchy neighborhood in San Francisco. No car. My budget was smaller, but it was a comfortable lifestyle. I could afford to travel and had a robust social life.

I make $105k and (after medical care deductions) my husband makes about $60k. We are in Northern California and all of our bills are paid each month. No credit card debt, both vehicles are paid off, but we don’t have a ton to put in savings. Our net pay is much lower than our gross and paying a $4k mortgage and with the outrageous cost of PG&E ($400 non-summer and about $850 or more when we run the AC each month), the numbers dwindle quickly. I work from home so literally could make this amount in any state, but family is deeply rooted here or we would be gone. It’s terrible what California has become.

I make $132k before bonuses doing People Analytics for a large and publicly traded company.

We are doing alright now. I have concerns about when Student Loan payments start back up. They wouldn’t be as much of an issue if I wasn’t the sole provider for this family of 4, or if I wasn’t paying just under 1k a month in child support. So I’ve been working to get other debts into better situations to ease the transition back into paying on those.

I work in commercial composting and do some food delivery on the side for a total before tax of about $45k.

I have enough to live on frugally, but there’s not much left over after the necessities are paid for, so I wouldn’t call my current situation comfortable. I worry a fair bit about big expenses cropping up like a major car repair or any medical issues that might prevent me from working for a time.

I’m moving to a nearby area with more affordable housing this summer, so that should make things a little easier.

I work probably less than 20 actual hours a week and have a lot of time to get other things done at home. I just have a really good team and have the support I need….and since I’ve basically been through hell in this kind of work, the “challenging” parts are really nothing to me.

I work with data scientists a lot and am learning new coding languages….my goal is to transition to data science here or find it somewhere else down the road. I want more money so my spouse can quit their job, but I also really, really like this company.

I’m a Natural Resource Technician making $45k per year (pre-tax). I feel like I do live comfortably, but I live with two other people who both make more than me ($60k and $175k). I wouldn’t be able to live on my own

Urban Kentucky. 39k/yr. Spouse earns about 40k. We still can’t afford a house but at least I’m looking at a new-to-mev car soon

I work for a non profit and I make a little over $35,000 a year.

My husband and I are doing ok. He makes a lot more than me. I think we are in that weird space between working class and middle class. I drive an old ass car, but I also buy what I want (small things, not like $500 purses).

My husband is the sole provider. I’m a stay home parent. I don’t know his gross income, but his take home is about $9500 per month, so about $114,000 per year.

It’s definitely enough for us to live comfortably and save some, too.

69k usps. My husband is on disability and we have 2 teen sons that eat about half our pay. I spend so much on food.

I make just shy of $70k (remote insurance work), my wife makes about $35k (medical assistant) working a little less than full time because she’s in nursing school. Once she’s done with school her pay will increase significantly. But we do okay here in central Ohio, we have a house, 2 cars and 5 pets. We don’t do a lot of vacations or shopping because we try to be frugal.

Teacher here. I make 50K. I have 12 years of experience and an M.Ed. My husband makes about 40K as a state government employee. I definitely feel we are both underpaid, but we make it work. Thankfully, we live in a LCOL area. We definitely aren’t able to live big (we don’t go on vacations really and all our stuff tends to be secondhand) or save a ton of money though.

  84. doccat8510 Avatar

I’m a doctor in a LCOL area. I make ~450k a year. I had a ton of debt from medical school, undergrad, and residency but now that I’ve paid that off things are super.

Attorney. Been practicing 25+ years and make mid six figures …. I’m admittedly well off. House is paid off. 401K and IRA are flush. Vacation 3 times a year minimum to various global destinations and about 7/8 years from hanging it all up and spending my days fishing and hiking

I’m in the military, and my take-home pay is 98K per year. I feel like I live very comfortably, I can’t complain.

Journeyman Electrician, work with fire alarm systems. I switched up because the work seemed more chill and the co-workers aren’t a majority of degenerates. I’m in the Union, pull in about $85k after taxes. It’s not great and it’s not bad. Insurance is amazing, $600 out-of-pocket max. It pays the bills and I live in a relatively low cost area. Take home truck that I have free range of.

  88. Ultimate_Driving Avatar

$100k, and I only live comfortably because I have a 700 square foot house that I was fortunate to have been able to buy for $140k. I would not be living comfortably if I had to pay rent or buy a house at today’s prices and interest rates.

Reading the comments, I wish my skill set went beyond hospitality/food service/retail jobs. 😢

I did go back to school but the field I got my certification in is not a high demand field. It’s best if I go the freelance route with and I’m struggling with that, too. Ahh.

I make about 300k as a software engineer. I work remotely from a relatively low cost of living area and I feel plenty comfortable spending about 50k/year (single).

Today l learned people on Reddit are making $$$. I live in California and make just under 100k. I can pay bills easy enough, but it’s been harder to save extra with the cost of everything increasing. I am taking the CPA test this year and am hoping to increase my income and relocate.

  93. Justmakethemoney Avatar

    Approx $80K as a gov’t law librarian.

I’m saving for early retirement and had bought a house on my own prior to being married, so I’d say I’m pretty comfortable.

I’m a speech therapist (SLPA) in Texas. I have 14 years experience and am making about $67,000. I can usually afford everything I need, but I do have to be VERY conscientious of how I spend because there’s not a lot of extra. Trying to save, but find that difficult as I have one credit card I’m working on paying off.

Recovery Program Coordinator at a nonprofit supporting folks with SUD. I’m a program manager with a recovery coaching certification. I make $56k/year. I do okay, since my partner is a baker who makes about $60k/year. We live in a HCOL area and have a 6 year old. We still can’t buy a house, but we’re getting there. 🥲

    I’m an EMT.

I make $15.5 an hour, but overtime kicks in past 40 and is paid at 2x.

I work 48hrs a week minimum, but can comfortably bang that up to about 84hrs and still only work 4 days in a week. I sleep, eat, play games, drive, clean up, read, and workout like 80% of the time. So I have time to do my at-home hobbies while AT work.

I think my take home is about $2.5k a month if I do the bare minimum, but I can easily more than double that if I choose to since I’m pretty much a homebody anyways. I once worked 84hrs in a week just because I decided to pick up extra shifts because I didn’t want to drive the 20 minutes home and have to set my laptop back my desk (I got really into a game and wanted to beat it). In that period I only got like 24 calls.

My bills come out to about $1.45k. I own a 3br/2ba home with 10 acres. Fairly low COL area, so I could comfortably live off of a 48hr shift alone.

About $50k as a bedside ICU nurse (with baby on the way!). Husband makes next to nothing because he’s got a part time min-wage job and about to go back to school for computer science, so right now things are paycheck to paycheck. But it’ll be okay. We are sober (6 and 5 years respectively), our first child will be here at the end of summer, we own a lovely home that we hope to pass down to her one day, and nobody goes to bed hungry. So it’s a grind but I’m grateful for all of it.

Farm laborer. I make 22/hour, it goes up every year. I don’t really have expenses. I can stay at my parents any time I want but pay a friend for a room. I went from miserable chasing a dream to having a job that I don’t hate every time I show up. No amount of money can take that relief off me ever again. All that said I do appreciate i got lucky in life. I’m by no means rich, but also not broke.

I manage a dozen field crews for a chimney sweep and fireplace shop. A lot of hats to wear in this position. It’s the most stressful job I’ve ever had. NGL. But It has led me to learn and grow so much over the last five years, I love it despite the high stress.

    I make about $70k/ year.

“Comfortable” is relative. I live comfortably on that. My definition (keep in mind that I am a 45-year-old life-long bachelor): I own a suburban 1,000 sq.ft. ranch house. I drive a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek base trim with a manual transmission and a 2014 Harley Street Bob. I put about as much into retirement savings every month as my mortgage plus RE taxes. I don’t go out much anymore. Being a bachelor, it’s not like I’m making fancy meals at home. Dinner every night is like $5 worth of groceries if that. I treat myself from time to time, but regular meals are pretty cheap.

I work in aviation, moving up to a nicer salaried position, my better half is a therapist. We’ll be looking at about 125,000 combined this year. We don’t have any student loans or car payments anymore, and are hoping to have our home paid off in the next 10 years, by the time we’re 40.

I think we live pretty comfortably. Typically take 4-6 weeks of vacation a year. Probably eat too well to be honest. Will be starting a family this year or next. Wish I would’ve invested more in my 20s, and wish I would’ve gone to college earlier. Also lived in Japan for about a year, I miss it a lot sometimes!
