I ate a shawarma with garlic sauce, I noticed the sauce was sour after eating it.

r/

My mom smelled the garlic sauce after I ate the shawarma and she told me the sauce went sour. She told me nothing would happen, but I still wanted to ask here if it’s not a big deal.

Lol. You’ll be fine. We all eat food past its prime occasionally. You might have an upset stomach or maybe a little diarrhea. If you do start to feel sick, just stay hydrated with plenty of water or Gatorade. If you spike a high fever or see blood in your diarrhea, go to your nearest urgent care or ER (but that is extremely unlikely). Honestly, you probably won’t have any symptoms at all. Our stomachs are strong and can handle a little gross food now and then. Don’t stress 🙂

Get medical advice from a doctor, and not from people on reddit. Call poison control or a doctor, or check out one of those fancy apps that give you doctors to talk to for cheap if you feel concerned

It will likely be nothing more than an upset stomach at most. Try to distract yourself so your mind doesn’t play tricks. If you are really sick it will let you know but if you think about it your brain will say “I’m thinking about getting sick so I should create the symptoms.” I do that all the time.

If you feel very bad that it’s concerning then talking to a doctor. Also, you can let your mom know and it sometimes helps just having someone there who knows

Serious GI upset (aka food poisoning) is usually a result of either a communicable microorganism (like norovirus) that someone gets into your food, onto your hands, or onto a food contact surface, and then you ingest (aka the oral-fecal route), or the result of something able to grow in non food-safe temperatures which produces a toxin, like botulism. Being infected can make you really sick, and toxins (that won’t be destroyed by cooking) can make you really sick.

Neither of these typically causes any perceptible change to the food.

I’m nearly 40, I’ve had food poisoning two times in my life, once enough to land me in the hospital, and one was a delicious breakfast biscuit at a restaurant, the other was Pizza Hut. Nothing was weird about the food, just someone didn’t wash their hands, or didn’t cool/heat something properly.

There’s no way to say exactly what you’re looking at, not without some dedicated testing, but it’s probably just a sauce held too long that started to ferment. Almost certainly no health impact, I’ve had undercooked dough give me really serious gas (yeast that wasn’t killed I presume), but the real consequences are almost always something you didn’t see coming.

Worst thing is you’ll poop yourself for like an hour or two.

You lived long enough to post about it. My guess is you’ll be alright.

What kind of garlic sauce? Was it homemade, store bought or restaurant made?

You’ll be fine. At the worst you may get the poops a bit but most likely not.

Most garlic sauce in shawarma shops is simply garlic, salt, lemon, and oil… probably nothing harmful will come of this.

Good for you. Feels strong bones. Honestly though, if you eat like this occasionally I feel like you’re not going to be someone who gets food poisoning easily.
