im just trying to find the best way to hang my clothes that’ll save me the most time in the mornings & not make me annoyed that I can’t make an outfit.
by color, type of shirt, texture? or any other way I haven’t considered, all are accepted and encouraged 🙂

I’m not a fashionista by any stretch, but I find it easiest to put outfits together when stuff is hung up by color. I put pants on one side and shirts on the other. I fold my leggings and tank tops up and put them in a drawer or on a shelf in the closet.
Color. Blacks on the left, Whites on the right, with “Rainbow”, as best you can, in between. TWO Rainbows, if you wanna divide Work & Play. Also, ALL the way to the right, hang anything you’ve worn once & can wear again; “shop” this section when you’re picking out next outfits…
By type. Sleeveless shirts, short sleeved blouses, long sleeved blouses, short sleeve T-shirts, long sleeved Ts, jackets, nice pants and dresses. Everything else is folded.
Most everything on my closet is black, so by color doesn’t help me.
I used to organize by color, but with patterns it gets hard and I used to wear a lot of stripes. Now I organize by type and I find it easier because the last thing I want to do it shift all my crap to find the one tank top I want to wear because it’s invisible amongst the larger shirts. It also make it easier to shuffle seasonal things around. I keep my pants all folded on a shelf and hang all my shirts.
I’ve tried a bunch of things. For me, what works best is solids in a rainbow (like someone else mentioned) and within that starting with long sleeves, middle sleeves, sleeveless, pants/leggings, and finally skirts/dresses. The other rung is for prints, largely organized the same way. This works for me because I start with something like, “Oh, I LOVE this top, and it’s finally the weather for it!” And then it’s easy to put an outfit together.
I also take time the night before to pick out that outfit, along with jewelry and any other accessories. That way I feel more confident when I leave the house. I’m not wearing “what’ll have to do” because I’m running late.
Organize my what, now? I’m 59 years old and still consider it a win if it’s hanging up. That’s the best I can do lol.
There’s not one right way to organize your closet. What’s going to be the most useful to you in the morning? How do you pick your outfit for the day? Is it by color? Do certain things seem to go really well together such that you want to wear particular article a with particular article b? Then put them together and hang them together. Do you sometimes pick by colors, then organize by color and kind.
Organize by that, and things will make sense. You’ll know exactly where to put things when you put away your clean clothes from the laundry.
Put your tee-shirts, jeans, underwear, undershirts, bras if you’re a girl, socks, and other accessories into the drawers of a dresser. Hang everything else.
You might also want to check out the book “The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo. It has a lot of good tips for keeping things organized and letting go of the things that aren’t useful and clutter up your space, the things that don’t spark joy.
I usually put the things I wear the most at the front/in the most easily accessible spot.
And then the things I’m least likely to wear (formal wear, etc) at the back.
That’s it, really.
color coded and then within each color by sleeve length and casual/dressy
I habitually wear the same things together. Once I tried separating them, only to find myself searching for that specific piece. So much for that.
I hung everything together in mated pieces. I only accessorize. It has saved tons of time.
Repurpose locker organizers. They’re cheap at thrift stores, yard sales, etc. and they work just as well as the expensive clear acrylic closet organizers.
I organize by type. for example: Dresses, Thick jackets, Cardigans, Long sleeves, T-shirts, Collared Shirts, Gym wear, etc.
Work clothes, casual clothes, dress clothes. Pants in between work and casual because they go with both. Then casual clothes by sleave length, or warmth.
Like others have said I separate by casual/work/dressy. I rotate my closet twice a year.
I’m about to pack away fall/enter and bring out the spring summer stuff.
When I start packing away, if I didn’t wear it that season then it doesn’t get stored but instead donated. Of course, I have exceptions but this keeps me from keeping clothes I’m not wearing.
I also put away things like tee shirts and pajamas each season. They aren’t really season specific but it gives me a ‘new’ option. Plus it helps them last longer.
I do mine by type, then by color. Dress pants together, jeans together, short sleeved shirts and sweaters, long sleeved shirts and sweaters, dresses, jackets, etc.
TOPS
By color – left to right.
White, cream, prints, pinks reds orange green blue brown black.
Each color then gets sorted sleeveless, shirt sleeves, long sleeves, vests, jackets.
BOTTOMS
Left to right: skirts shorts dress slacks, jeans
By length & type. Long dresses to short dresses to long skirts to short skirts to short shirts to long shirts. Kinda makes an arch and allows for storage under the hanging clothes.
My long sleeve tops are on the bottom rod, short sleeve on the top. I colorize them all. I love when I need a black t-shirt and just have to look through the black shirts that are all grouped together.
I always rehang things on the end. The things I wear most will be right there and the things on the other end, I know I don’t wear so I can get rid of them. Not that I do get rid of them, but theoretically, I could.
Sleeve length. Long sleeves,, 3/4 sleeves, short sleeves, no sleeves p, then dresses in no actual order. Sleeve length I try to also keep in order of warmth. So really warm items to the left, less warm to the right. When I know the weather, I know what section of my closet to look at.
I have 2 closets. One side has 2 tiers. It has shirts, t shirts, blouses and tops. It is all color separated. On the bottom tier I have all my jackets and blazers and cardigans color organized. Sweaters are on the shelf by type, and leggings and folded pants are on the next shelf and a basket for scarves is on the third shelf. In the opposite closet are long hanging things by type. Pants, skirts, dresses, gowns and maxi dresses, dusters, raincoats, and opera length coats. Shoes and purses and hats on the shelves. I have a whole other closet for collections from 4 artists/designers, and I keep my costumes in that closet. On the wall I have a towel bar where I keep all my tank tops with a shower curtain ring through the straps.
In these categories:
And then also by season for the things that need to rotate in/out.
Nicer pants, sweaters/ sweatshirts and anything buttoned I hang up- t shirt, shorts, jeans I’ll fold and put on the shelf.
