Mod note: OP asked about your experience with Nexplanon.

If you don’t have any experience with it, don’t leave a top-level comment as you’re not answering the question. Also please remember that this is not a place for advice, especially not for medical advice.

I had 2 nexplanon for about 8 years. 4 years for each. I liked that it completely stopped my period. I had no major issues like weight gain or massive spotting or a constant period or anything like that.

However, I realized it did cause me to have a MASSIVELY reduced libido for most of the time I was on it, to the point that I thought maybe I’m asexual. I am not and now I’m on a Low-Ogestrel pill and definitely no suppressed libido.

My first one, I didn’t get a period for the full 3 years. But it made my acne much worse. I started taking Spironolactone with the nexplanon just to keep my acne at bay. I think I gained about 5 lbs too.

My second one, I bled at the most random times and lengths of time. I ended up getting it removed early because I felt like I was on my period 24/7. Granted it was more like spotting than a full blown period, but it was annoying.

On the bright side, I don’t feel like it made me moody or impacted my libido like some other birth controls did. And no unwanted pregnancies!

I used it for 8 years and in the beginning I really liked it. Low hassle and my periods were basically non existent. Maybe one every 3-6 months. However, the longer I was on it, my libido continued to lower until it was basically zero. I also started having very low self esteem and just struggled with self-image in general. Once I took it out it was like a complete 180. I went back to wanting sex almost every day and actually thought I was pretty again. I also found out I have PCOS once I came off it because I didn’t have a period for three months and they’re supposed to come back within a monthish. So the birth control was pretty much hiding my symptoms.

Similar to almost every birth control though, your experience may be very different. I’m honestly never going on birth control again because I didn’t realize how much it was impacting my body over time and I don’t ever want to be in a position where I don’t realize what’s going on with me. But I fully support whatever folks decide to do on their own. This is just my rambling opinion.
