its a typical “grass is greener on the other side” mentality. usually from people that dont actually know that much about said “other side”

in this case they’re probably seeing all the nice stuff about eastern culture and forget that everything has pros on con. some stuff about eastern aspects of life might be better, but other things might suck. Then they also take for granted things in the western world, like cheese.

In the west, it’s currently fashionable to hate your home country. That often comes with a lack of willingness to criticize non-western countries for their shortcomings.

Huh? Gonna have to be a bit more specific.

New wave-y Buddhism fans? Anime stans? People who somehow mix pro-Palestine views with a fight against western capitalism?

Wtf are you even talking about.

Because criticising foreign peoples and cultures is just pure racism and evil while any and all criticism of western culture and history is extremely common and almost a sport to a lot of people. Furthermore any positive talk about western history and culture can be seen as white supremacy or colonialism and is deeply frowned upon.

So when you weigh up the eastern cultures where you can be only say positive against western culture which you are only allowed to say negative things it’s pretty obvious which one comes out on top

Because they think it’s the same as having a personality

Lets be completely honest, what you are talking about is an incredibly small minority. However, the few people who adopt this mindset are reacting to the last 2000 years of “western the greatest ever, everything else totally barbaric”.

As someone with a history degree focusing on western history, plenty of non-European cultures have plenty to teach us. I assure you, we can afford to give them some space.
