If I apply for a place on Indeed and I’m immediately emailed something that eventually wanted my social security number, that’s a huge red flag right?

Yes. Real jobs don’t need your social security number until you’re hired and getting paid.
Unless you’re offered employment by an actual person and you’re signing actual employment documents- do not give your SS #
“Eventually wanted your social security number”
That’s normal.
Definite red flag.
Let me guess, the email address’s domain is not the same as the company’s domain you applied to?
They won’t need your SSN until it is time to fill out the tax forms to get your withholding set up. Which is part of the hiring process. So if they haven’t even offered you a job yet, they dont need it. They might try to claim that they need it for a background search, but the last four digits should be sufficient for that. They don’t need the whole thing.
