Meat on the bone is gross

r/

This hit me recently when I got wings and realized that it’s literally the leg of a chicken. A chicken’s leg. I look at my cat, he’s almost that same leg, looked down at my own calves and quads and felt nauseous almost immediately.

Like the whole drums versus flats vs thigh debate is just debating which body part is best. It’s wild to me and I’m seriously astounded no one thinks about it

Just so you’re aware, even if the meat isn’t on the bone it still came from an animal.

  3. ExpertRegister1353 Avatar

100% correct. I will not eat meat with the bones left in.

  4. AdStrange2167 Avatar

Lots of people do think about it. This is the basis for vegetarianism and veganism, or at the very least reducing your meat consumption.

  5. Icy-Swordfish8694 Avatar

While I won’t outright refuse to eat a chicken leg, I have often thought the same thing myself and prefer boneless if I have a choice.

  6. Rainbwned Avatar

    So your vegetarian now?

  7. staggspirit Avatar

Ripping flesh from bone is one of the greatest sensations a human can have. It’s primal. You’re a baby.

  8. C5H2A7 Avatar

Would you prefer to eat the breast, or thigh meat stripped from the bone? Or meat ground in a grinder? It’s all meat.

  9. CalgaryChris77 Avatar

Nah, all the best meats are right on the bone, chicken, ribs, t-bone, pork chops.

  10. Ok_Relationship_705 Avatar

That happened to me… For like, 6 seconds

  11. James50100 Avatar

I like that it reminds me it was once alive. Just knowing that it suffered and died makes it taste better to me.

  12. superchimpa Avatar

bo hoo hoo, are you gonna go vegan on us next?

  13. ratbastid Avatar

A chicken’s wing… is its leg? Let’s think just a little more about that.

Look, being a meat eater is gross if you think too hard about it, bones or no. You’re eating an animal’s muscles. And they’re delicious.

(EDIT: If you want to tell me a chicken wing is its arm, I can nearly get on board.)

    Seriously????

  15. cookiesoon Avatar

I prefer meat.on the bone tbh

  16. Y-the-MC Avatar

This reminds me of a quote from Archer:

“You think that meat comes from the supermercado, all wrapped in nice plastic wrap.”

    “Yeah, you’re describing meat.”

  17. WorldWideVegHead Avatar

I feel this so hard. I don’t eat meat and I don’t share meals with people eating meat to save myself from this sight. I work at a non-profit fighting the worst practices in factory farming, and I look at a lot of animal cruelty footage as part of my job. There’s no way I’m going to sit around watching people dig into dead animals when I’ve seen what they go through during their short and brutal lives.

  18. RustyDiamonds__ Avatar

If you’re willing to eat meat then I don’t see why being reminded it was a living thing should matter. You’re always aware of that. But if you feel strongly about this you should read up on veganism. Folks do think about this stuff, some very strongly.

  23. Darnitol1 Avatar

We think about it. It’s how our species survived and thrived. Society creates an insulating layer for people like you to not have to think about how we survive, but effectively everything you’ve ever eaten is killing something. I’m not a hunter and hope I never have to kill, skin, cook, and eat an animal, but I respect the reality that we live in and that I am insulated from these tasks because I have other skills that have value in a society where other people are providing literally every bite of food that keeps me alive.

  24. ForeignSleet Avatar

I mean yeah what did you think it was? Are you really that disconnected from where your food comes from?

  25. bugsy42 Avatar

Have you ever processed any meat in your life? Or you buy take out your whole life?

  26. Sunny_Hill_1 Avatar

Uhm, I was about five years old when I realized it? Have you never seen a living chicken, or at least a whole chicken in the grocery store?

  33. EmoPrincxss666 Avatar

I agree that meat on the bone is gross, but for me its a texture thing (mainly with poultry)

  34. Hariblanus Avatar

I actually prefer sausage and other processed meats. Some hooves, lips and a pig dick? Give me two.

  35. timmyaintsure Avatar

    Nothing else to worry about?

  36. yaleric Avatar

If you don’t like the fact that meat comes from animals, then you should probably stop eating meat rather than trying to obscure the reality of its origin.

  37. baddecision116 Avatar

This is a problem of people being way too disconnected from their food.

  38. connorgrs Avatar

I think people don’t like eating bone-in because it forces them to confront the fact that they’re eating part of a well-seasoned animal carcass. Boneless stuff suspends belief much better.

  41. WOLFMAN_SPA Avatar

    It doesnt bother me

    All meat comes from bones.

  42. Beginning-Seat5221 Avatar

How long did it take you to realise this?

  43. D3adp00L34 Avatar

My wife doesn’t like to eat meat too close to a bone because she thinks it looks gross. So I can sorta understand maybe?

  44. lostevrthng888 Avatar

Of course it would be been nice to get meat not killing any animals but we don’t have that option and meat is irreplaceable cause it has unique proteins that we need, thus we have to admit that we have to eat meat and if we do it, why not to talk about what is the better part and how to make it good? We’re all animals and animals eat animals this is nature. We’re on top of food chain so we have to take it. Honestly if cats were herbivores we would be eaten them too! We don’t eat carnivore animals cause it inefficient. Anyway your attitude to something is your choice and you make your choices cause you decide it’ll be better for you. Like vegetarians for example, they sacriface food pleasures to feel thesmselfs better so this is all about trade.

  45. mstrong73 Avatar

Upvote for being an unpopular opinion. My wife prefers meat that isn’t on a bone because she finds it messy but she’ll eat it. Growing up as a hunter/farm kid gives me a different perspective.

  46. GerFubDhuw Avatar

    > I got wings and realized that it’s literally the leg of a chicken

  47. Chunky_clouds Avatar

I eat meat because I can buy it. If I had to slaughter a chicken for that meat I probably wouldn’t eat it.

  48. cdh79 Avatar

  49. doesnotexist2 Avatar

  50. flowersfromflames Avatar

Have you considered your too used to meat not being on the bone so you don’t think of it.
I regularly chop up chickens and it’s cool how it all works. Stay connected to food.

  51. _Diggus_Bickus_ Avatar

Drummets and flats are both from the wing not the leg. You can buy them still connected to each other.

    The Drumstick is the leg.

And yes, different body parts taste different, have different shapes and nutritional values.

  52. Hour-Watercress-3865 Avatar

It’s fun to watch people have that realization. We are so disconnected as a society from where out food comes from that the idea that your meat was once alive is just a full shock to so many people.

Even your hamburger was alive and mooing once, despite being off a bone.

  53. tooskinttogotocuba Avatar

Everyone thinks about it. Very few people care, at least not enough that they’re the to change their habits.

  57. Rubyhamster Avatar

This is just one of many realizations people go through during life. Like seeing the moon as orb rather than flat; like feeling the call of the void; the realization that even a spider has a whole world in it’s perspective; or feeling how the wind is just air being air moved around by electricity over the whole world. Congratulations on the realization. Now lets see if it makes you vegan or not. For me, it just felt primal and made me a part a nature

  58. ogrefab Avatar

  61. 21_Mushroom_Cupcakes Avatar

My grandpa was a butcher. The closer the bone, the sweeter the meat.

  62. BigJohnsBeenDrinkin Avatar

Wing. It’s the wing of a chicken.

  63. Frewtti Avatar

You’re just trying to pretend you’re not eating an animal.

I think everyone who eats chicken should be forced to kill and dress one.

  64. HeroBrine0907 Avatar

…what? Have you never eaten a chicken’s actual leg, which isn’t its wing? Have you never had the opportunity to hold a fried chicken leg in your hand and eat the meat off of the bone? You are shocked that meat comes from animals? Is this your first time as human? Are you an ancient dryad living off of the forest who has turned into an omnivore, a human, for the first time? What is this opinion?

  65. TurdEye69 Avatar

Bone on the meat on the other hand…

  66. MelanieDH1 Avatar

I learned that the meat we eat is from animals when I was 5. I didn’t give a fuck!

  67. Teaofthetime Avatar

Not really, if you can’t face the reality of eating an animal perhaps vegetarianism is the best option for you.

  68. VeganMinx Avatar

I’m proud of you for this realization. I urge you to keep going down this path. You’ll realize how truly horrific animal agriculture is, and what you’re truly consuming when you eat meat will turn your stomach.

  69. Midnight2012 Avatar

Most animals have roughly equivalent skeletons.

  70. mckmaus Avatar

I’m going for a succulent and juicy experience. Bone in for me. I guess if you think a leg is a wing you aren’t going to be on that level.

  71. throwfarfarawayy99 Avatar

Don’t eat meat then, you should have enough respect for the animal you’re eating to face what the reality of it is imo.

  72. Imaginary_Dot_8953 Avatar

  74. GrimmTrixX Avatar

At Thanksgiving, we all huddle around the cooked corpse of a turkey and slice into it and pass it around. I’ve always thought of how that’s normal to us. I still enjoy a good turkey leg even though I’m literally holding the leg bone of a dead animal while consuming it’s flesh.

But we don’t actively think about it like that otherwise we would all go insane. I’m just wired like you where I see things for what they are and how odd it is.

Like we goto a place with packaged animal flesh, dead fish, dead shrimp, and even live lobsters that we then kill when we get home to cool them. But it normal to our brains to do this. And for the turkey, we leave the frozen body of the uncooked bird in our freezer until the day comes to cook it. So it’s a feather plucked and headless corpse of a turkey.

But I get why vegetarians/vegans exist and I’d wager they think of this horrifying thought too any time they see someone eating a chicken wing or a drumstick.

  75. dnatty503 Avatar

Nah bro, you’re alone on this one. I specifically look for specific parts cause I know they’re tastier. If I had to kill my own I’d probably pick the best parts first ya know?

It’s food first. Once it’s dead ya know.

  76. Goddamitdonut Avatar

Counterpoint:  its literally the best part.  But if it grosses you out then you shouldn’t be eating meat.  You are still participating in the meat industrial complex than is killing animals whether you are gnawing on a bone or eating a multi processed dino nuggets.  So think about that

  77. Greedy_Ray1862 Avatar

Bro, you lost me at calling a wing, a leg. ITS A WING… You can buy chicken feet. Claw and all

  78. oogledy-boogledy Avatar

A wing is more like an arm than a leg. The drumstick is the lower leg.

Kids should learn how to raise and butcher chickens in school. It would give them a better idea of where their food comes from.

  79. Gold-Ninja-4160 Avatar

Understanding your own body is one of the most empowering things you can do—and there’s no better way to do that than by feeding it what it was designed to eat. Ruminant meat, in particular, delivers the most complete amino acid, fatty acid, vitamin, and mineral profile available. Nothing even comes close. Particularly when the animals are raised in a natural environment with the foods they would naturally eat. Not a factory.

Eating meat isn’t just about fueling your body—it’s about shaping it. Chewing real food off the bone actively strengthens your jaw, conditions the ligaments around your teeth, and helps maintain natural alignment. Contrast that with the modern soft, processed diet that leaves kids with crowded teeth and adults with chronic metabolic dysfunction.

Soft Foods, Soft Bodies, Sick Minds

Processed carbohydrates, especially refined sugars, wreck everything early. Cavities, orthodontics, blood sugar roller coasters. Fast forward a few decades, and it’s full-blown metabolic collapse: diabetes, obesity, dementia, degenerative disease. All avoidable, but only if you’re willing to reject the standard diet most people blindly follow.

    Predator Eyes, Predator Fuel

You’re a forward-facing predator, not a grazer. Your eyes didn’t end up in the front of your skull by accident—they’re there to target, hunt, and survive. Just like lions. Just like wolves. Exceptions like sharks and crocs prove the rule: different environment, same outcome—maximum efficiency in pursuit of prey.

So yes, the meat is on the bone. And yes, it’s supposed to be torn off, not spoon-fed.

  80. anxnymous926 Avatar

    The wing is the leg?

You’re eating the flesh of an animal, it’s all “from a bone.” The flesh of a plant really isn’t that much less gross either, some animals eat animals, some animals eat plants, some animals eat both.

I’ve never understood this perspective, personally. I guess I could, but I don’t eat meat without considering where it comes from. I have seen a few animals I had previously seen very much alive slaughtered (thankfully, I didn’t actually have to watch them get killed as a kid). That is what meat is, after all.
