Traveling on vacation to barhop is stupid. With some exceptions.

r/

Vegas, fair. Springbreak, fair But I do not understand how many people travel on vacation to new locations just to get f***** u* at a bunch of different bars. You can literally do that in your town.
I went on vacation last year to a oceanside town. The place was absolutely stuffed with amazing things to do, but the people I went with just wanted to bar hop. Why would you travel 5 hours to see the bottom of a tequila bottle when you could do that in your home town? I will never get it

Because bar hopping from beach bar to beach bar is probably more fun than doing it at home?

To be honest, I think some people like the idea of a vacation more than the concept of a vacation. Some people probably just want to drink and socialize somewhere that isn’t their hometown. Not saying they’re weird or wrong for doing so, but maybe that’s just what they like to do.

    Have an upvote.

The bar scene is probably the easiest way to meet locals and really get to experience the culture in a foreign country. This just comes off as made and opinionated because you personally have hang ups about alcohol consumption in general.

So yeah unpopular opinion, but comes from a place of no experience too.

I am not a big drinker so I agree that it is kind of silly to pay money to go get hammered. On the flip side I don’t like going out in my small hometown because I know I’m going to see the same people all of the time I don’t care to see. I don’t mind going to a bar and having a few drinks on vacation because there is at least the opportunity to me new and interesting people. – But, yeah, if it’s purely just to go out and get piss drunk I don’t understand it thankfully.

Maybe you been 86’d from all the bars in your own town!

I think bae hopping is just an excuse/an easy to meet new people in a natural way. I wouldn’t do it tho.

You can say fucked up here. I prefer doing fun stuff while drinking

So you don’t want to relax or drink. Not everybody vacations the same. If your job is stressful and time-consuming, you need to take time to relax and refuel.

So they can say they’ve been to whatever the trendy location is and they think they can get away with more because they don’t live there.

Bars are where most socialization between strangers happens. If you want to meet locals, odds are good there’s a number of them at a local bar

I don’t drink, but the biggest difference for me between going away on vacation and taking time off at home is that there are chores to do at home! You go away to get away from your regular responsibilities.

Sure, you could bar hop in your own town, but you’re still going home to laundry and dishes and everything else that needs doing.

100000% agree. I barely drink on trips. My city (Toronto) has tons of bars 😂

Resorts in foreign countries. You go to Belize or Costa Rica to sit by an admittedly beautiful ocean and eat hot dogs and hamburgers and guzzle whatever cheap commodity booze they have a deal with. You do this for 4 or 5 days then leave. You never experience the country or the cuisine or the people.

You literally could’ve gone to a resort in California and gotten the exact same experience for half the cost.

When I travel internationally, I would rather meet people and enjoy music and local culture than see a bunch of churches or paintings I don’t care about.

I’ll travel and do local breweries. My first rule of traveling is to not eat/drink what you can easily get back home, so when we travel we try to experience as much of the place as we reasonably can.

Because i like drinking and i like traveling. I like to mix them together.

    Pretty simple to understand.

I bar hopped in Nottingham UK. The oldest bar I went into was from the 1600s.

You can learn a lot about culture and about the locality at a bar or dinner table. It definitely isn’t my sole purpose to travel, but I’ve made some life long friends drinking in the places I travel.

I went to Dublin for example. Met some random guys playing rugby, ended up asking where the locals go to drink and that turned into probably the most memorable 8 hours of my life. I visit Ireland annually now to see some of those guys.

I feel like you’ve twisted the reality here.

Limiting the good (vs stupid) reasons to “Vegas” or “Springbreak,” makes it seem like you have a very narrow perspective of destinations travellers go, and/or what they do when they’re away. So, if I barhop in Vegas I’m not stupid, but I am stupid if I do it in Prague? Or San Juan Del Sur? Or Bangkok?

Where is this line between a place where it’s not stupid to bar hop vs. it is clearly stupid?
