hereditary wasn’t bad, but it was seriously overhyped.
it started off strong with deep themes of grief and trauma, which seemed promising, but then it suddenly veered into cults and decapitated pigeons…like what?
that flip was so jarring and not even in a clever way. it felt like two completely different movies awkwardly stapled together tbh.
the plot got weird really fast, and not in a good or satisfying way. It relied too much on shock value over actual substance, like it just wanted to be disturbing for the sake of it.
it felt cheap, like they were trying way too hard to be edgy. and the ending??
and before anyone says “you just didn’t get it”- i did. i’ve watched it multiple times, I know what it was trying to do, and it genuinely had so much potential imo.
however, it just wasn’t that deep, and it definitely wasn’t worth the hype.

100%. Only good scene was the creepy kid getting decapitated.
Well it’s nice you think that. You’re wrong but you are allowed to say that
it wasn’t even scary honestly
Spoiler****
It’s like they wanted the decapitation scene in there so bad they didn’t care where it took the plot hahaha
I agree with you. Heavily overrated film.
I’ve honestly always felt the same, that it kinda veered totally off track suddenly from a deep psychological drama about this family. Like they do set it up, kind of, but that doesn’t mean it’s set up well or should have even been done. I found myself loving the first half and really not liking the second half because of how jarring it was. I’ll usually give a film a second chance, but when they don’t know the genre they want to be I don’t.
It literally scared the hell out of me. What is with all the decapitation in the movie?
I feel it’s overrated. Its not bad. There are things it does well… but overall it doesn’t escape the genre in any unexpected way. Its still very much a horror that relies heavily on shock.
The acting is phenomenal, there are a lot of great shots and certainly memorable moments.
A24 has the wool over our eyes.
7/10
Pos. Hated it
I agree I was really enjoying the movie until the cult themes started to come in and I felt incredibly disturbed with the ending. I couldn’t even watch the last 40 minutes of it because I was completely disgusted and not in a way horror movies usually do it for me. Just a really bad turn of events that didn’t fit with the initial theme. I rate the movie a 5/10 at best.
I thought it was near perfect. Take my upvote.
I think it was strong but uneven and had that air of new talent desperate to impress. Titus Andronicus vibes
Dang, that was one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. I was absolutely in awe from start to finish. An emotional rollercoaster.
Truly an unpopular opinion.
Can I ask how old you are? You seem like you might have been a bit young for it.
I loved it and thought they hinted at it all the way through. The supernatural as an allegory for mental health was a cool concept, and I’m glad they didn’t go down the “she was just crazy” route. One of my favourite youtube essays is on unpicking this film: Novum
I don’t think your opinion is unpopular though, I see people complain online about this film all the time.
I don’t think it’s an unpopular opinion. I prefer Midsommar because of its shock value. Hereditary neither had that nor any jump scare moments (except that one).
It was a great movie, you just aren’t used to media that forces you to pay attention to detail. For you to say that the movie lacks substance just goes to show that media literacy is fried and dead.
Yes I didn’t think it was a great movie. Yet I’m told it’s a freakin masterpiece. I just don’t understand.
Reddit loves it for some reason
I agree and then I watched Midsommar and figured maybe I’m just not into this director’s style or something. I thought Rosemary’s Baby or the original Wicker Man was better as far as fictional cult-themed films go.
Also, it’s a bit disingenuous to make the cultists act this bizarre and maybe it’s because I live in an area that had a lot of cults and people with cultish thinking that I couldn’t enjoy either film for being so unrealistic and shock-horror when they try their best to act “normal”. [ I also follow a YouTuber who lives kinda nearby who would investigates these local cults as well and that’s far more entertaining than either of those films were for me xd]
The post-decapitation scene was one of the most visceral scenes I have ever seen in any movie. For that alone I give it props. But I agree the movie itself is very mid.
First time watching it can seem a bit patchy. Second time absorbing the movie you get the deeper sense of the interconnected story. 3+ times and you realize what a masterpiece the movie really is
Same, it’s like 2 movies smashed together with just the same characters as connectors.
This belongs in r/wrongopinion
Dude just remade Rosemary’s Baby minus the Baby, then remade Wicker Man plus a girl, total bum
I had a great theater experience with it. I saw it in West Hollywood and there were some really dramatic men in the audience. My favorite was a jump scare scene where everyone screamed at different times. One guy was super late to find out and we all laughed at him
EDIT I tried rewatching it alone and it wasn’t as good. I still appreciate what it did though. And I just like horror movies in general
Shit was weird & creepy
It’s a movie about grieving and loss. You clearly didn’t get it
At the time, it really freaked me out in an uncomfortable unsettling way but I really agree. The way it just flipped to demonic cult plots was just not where I wanted it to go as a horror drama. We already have that in so many other movies. To me, Barbarian was a better drama horror to me. The drama and fear of the unknown, but wasn’t ruined by cheap demonic possessions and cult stuff like in Hereditary because that could’ve easily been avoided.
Upvote cause that movie was good AF to me
What did you make of Midsomnar?
So, like… do you watch a lot of films?
Because all other factors aside, the cinematography and the writing in Hereditary are pretty damn strong. It’s well regarded for a reason.
The cult aspect of the film shows up very early on. It’s not “stapled together,” both of these narratives are deeply intertwined. All of the trauma is deliberately inflicted by the cult.
Tried to watch it 3 times. Fell asleep 3 times. It’s The Babadook all over again.
I feel the same. I didn’t find it scary or a horror masterpiece.
Misses 50 cues that this is about a cult, it’s practically spelled out lol
I think the concept of ‘the paranormal is real! It’s real and powerful and so evil, but it’s not on your side, and you’re doomed before you’re even born’ to be existentially terrifying, personally. Genuine distress is what freaks me out the most, and Toni Collete’s acting was … ooogh, so hauntingly good!
Gotta say that I didn’t enjoy the sudden twist into culty stuff with my first watch, but I grew up in a cult and thought it was always a dumb twist for movies to just have a summoning circle or something.
That said, I do think it’s good overall (set design, cinematography, subtle notes in the script, etc), but maybe not your cup of tea!
the ending up in the treehouse is as stupid as stupid endings get.
idk if you did get it though, there was nothing deep to perceive metaphorically, its just a cool creepy/scary movie about a grandmother using her own kids and grandkids as vessels to give a demon king a body to harbor, it plays out like a mystery and has fantastic performances, theres no scenes that are pointless its so airtight
Couldn’t agree more it’s a load of old shit
Nah it was a very good movie. Specially in the context of horror which is often just tired reused crap.
I feel like, even though the writers/directors put enough in there to have someone guess the ending, it was still a pretty shit and abrupt ending.
I agree. And I didn’t like Midsommar that much either. Fans of both have said to rewatch them and you’ll like them knowing what’s coming. I rewatched Midsommar and haven’t been able to get myself to rewatch Hereditary.
I want to like them. I appreciate them, the talent on all sides. I appreciate the dive into grief, toxic relationships, need for community, death, dealing with death, fate, trauma, etc. They go much further than basic horror movies into things like this. The acting is great. The artistry is fantastic. I just don’t enjoy them.
Yeah. And the whole family had greasy hair. Especially that boy. They need to clarify that mess.
Everything that happened was because of the cult’s planning of events, it all fell in line to their motives. Saying it “veered into cults” just shows you actually didn’t understand it despite you saying you did. All of the signs are there, and the beauty of the movie comes from the fact that the normal person just watching it once most likely won’t pick up on it, but rewatching it makes you more aware to the clues left in the scenes.
