Subtitles should never be censored unless the audio is.

r/

In every content creation app I know of, “indecent words” can and are frequently said aloud, but the auto-generated or even scripted subtitles censor the word entirely. This loses sight of the fact that, while many hearing people (including myself) use them to make speech easier to understand or clarify if misheard, their primary function is to facilitate the retelling of the story to the deaf and hearing impaired. Unless the audio of the content is also censored, this double standard is a straight up middle finger to anyone who relies on the subtitles to understand the speech for no reason other than “it makes us uncomfortable to write the word and have to see it, but we’re cool with hearing it in everyday speech” because…consistency, I guess.

It is so weird how much of a cultural reflex being uncomfortable about swear words still is.
