Priests celibacy

If a young guy has sex, can he later on become a Preist even if he has remained celibate since that one time? Also why can’t they have sex?

They don’t have to be celibate before they’re priests. There are priests – and nuns – who have been married.

It’s part of the vows. Same reason they can’t be wealthy. It’s considered distracting from their service to god and their congregation/the church.

Congratulations you have found the loop hole. Bang like bunnies while you can and become a pious priest later. Lol.

    Yes. They can’t

Keep in mind that this is only limited to certain priests, for example Roman Catholic priests. They absolutely can have sex before their vows, as they have to usually do a degree in Divinity and then enter the seminary before doing their priestly vows (although as part of their discerning they would likely be celibate in the seminary). Anglican and Orthodox priests can be married, and with the connections between the Anglican and Catholic churches, I believe it is possible for a previously married Anglican priest who is widowed to serve as a Catholic priest.

The notion is that they are faithful to God and to their community, rather than to their own marriage and family.

    Sure.

    > Also why can’t they have sex?

Tradition. It’s believed Jesus never married or had sex.

Being a virgin is not a requirement for priesthood

I met a married Catholic deacon once, he took the vow of celibacy which prevents him from marrying again it does not interfere with his current marriage, as it is it not a vow of chastity. Priests can’t be married and are therefore chaste as sex outside of marriage is a forbidden.

This is true for Roman Catholic clergy, apart from those to whom were married clergy in another denomination, and have since become Roman Catholic priests.

Other denominations which have priests, such as the Orthodox and Anglican churches, their clergy can marry, of which I am an example of that, being a married Anglican priest.

Interestingly enough, the Roman Catholic church used to allow their clergy to be married. That, however, came to an official end at the Second Lateran Council in 1139.

Because they don’t want family interference. No families means priests come and go and the church retains all property and assets. But it’s just a ridiculous request. And one has to ask why so many pedos were attracted to be priests. I know it’s another issue but celibacy and sex is intertwined.

Most priests are married and have kids

Priests are “married to god” so they can’t get married to anyone else. At least in roman catholicism

    It’s a 12th century retcon.

For more than 1200 years, Catholic priests weren’t required to be single or celibate, so it’s obviously nothing to do with devoting their life to God or whatever they say.

The rule was made up so that the church’s wealth couldn’t be diluted by their descendants’ inheritances.

Bro, a priest raped my friends and molested me. They can still be priests. Literally, nothing fucking matters. Cheers.

PS I would not recommend anyone join a religion where the priests have to be celibate and never leave your children alone with them.

I know a few priests and NONE of them kept celibate….

Yes he can. He just can’t (or isn’t supposed to) after he becomes one.

  17. mustang6172 Avatar

    Yes.

    Because they can’t get married.

From what I have heard, sex before marriage is frowned on by the Church. If you can’t follow all the rules are you really religious enough?

What do people think happens in the bridegroom chamber revelations talks about.

Not all priests have to be celibate either, depends on the religion and denomination within that religion. As far as the REASON they are to refrain from sex: it is usually because they are to give up the desires of their flesh and pursue spiritual matters and helping others.

Most non-Catholic priests are allowed to be married and have kids during their priesthood. Episcopal priests, among others, are allowed to have same-sex marriages.

There’s a lot of widely varying beliefs within Christianity, actually.

Celibacy means never getting married. Doesn’t mean no sex. That’s a vow of chastity.
