That feeling when you’re trying to swallow a pill, and it feels like it’s decided to take a vacation halfway down your throat, and you’re just praying you can get it down without needing a Heimlich maneuver, it’s honestly just an awful sensation, I remember my son once had a similar experience, and it was quite disturbing.
yesss omg sameee 😭 even the tiniest lil ones make me gag like whyyy does my throat betray me like that lol 🙈 i always gotta hype myself up first like it’s some olympic event or smth
I can’t swallow pills at all. They get stuck in my throat and I start to choke and almost throw up. Anytime I need meds they write them for the liquid, chewable, or ODT versions.
My brother used to wrap his pills in bread more than doubling their size. It never made sense to me, but he said the bread was easier to swallow than the pill. He didn’t chew it either. He just swallowed this huge chunk of bread. I will never understand, but pills are fairly easy for me. I take them without water, no issue, so I don’t understand the gag reflex for pills.
Practice with mini M&Ms, move up to full size M&Ms when you feel you’re ready
Get a mouthful of water.
Tilt your head back.
Drop the pill into the water. You should have enough water that when you drop the pill in, you can’t feel it on your tongue or anything – it should just be surrounded by water
Swallow the water
Immediately take another drink of water and swallow that too.
Once you have this down, you can swallow even chalky or gross pills without tasting them or gagging.
I have to get a big drink, toss the pill in, and swallow all at once. It creates a little pond that just takes the pill with it. People that do pill first make me want to gag and it isn’t even my mouth facing the atrocity.
Always! I feel like I am unable to get it down. And when the aspirin like coating on some of them gets on your taste buds…it is so gross. It takes me a good twenty minutes to wash it away.
I can take pills without fluid but it’s not a good thing for your system. It’s is recommended that you drink a glass of water with pills to ensure everything goes down well.
I once coughed while taking a pill and it went up my nose and dissolved. The burn was intense and I had to get a saline flush due to the ingredients of the pill. That’s worse.
No, once I was properly taught how to take them I was good. I can slam down a handful of giant pills no problem. I’ve had patients who flat could not get even a small one down, though. Try a straw or bottle. Just using a glass or cup to drink out of is much harder.
Don’t drop the pills towards the back of your mouth or tilt your head back. Just place them on your tongue then drink like normal. I have to take a lot of pills, including some rather large and bitter ones. It wasn’t optional for me to be able to take them. My throat and esophagus spasm less with warm beverages, so I usually take my big handful of pills with my morning coffee or tea, rather than a cold or iced beverage.
I saw this on instagram recently and found it worked for me. Take the pill and put it in your mouth. Take a mouthful of water but don’t swallow just yet. Instead lean your torso forward like over a sink or countertop then swallow. Pills went down so easily I can even take two at a time!
I look down to swallow instead of the intuitive nod-and-gulp. Facing down and swallowing is necessary for pills that float. If the pill sinks in water it makes less sense, but it still helps me for some reason.

Yes. I almost always have to take pills with food so I can swallow them.

This is the reason I smoke medical cannabis! I hated taking pills and that’s all the docs want me on
I recently learned a trick that helps me, maybe it’ll help you too.
Put the pill in your mouth, then drink regularly from a straw for 3-4 gulps. More if necessary.
That’s it, best of luck friend!
Your boyfriend must be miserable

I do a little better when swallowing with a thicker liquid, like chocolate milk.

Yes, I put the water in my mouth first and that helps a lot
My ex couldn’t swallow pills. He had to grind them into a powder and dissolve it in water

Tuck your chin down before you swallow, it will help.
Only when taking my prenatals… there’s 3 of them I take at the same time and they smell like fish
