The women aboard the Blue Origin flight were passengers. They were not “crew”.

r/

Saying it was “the first all female crew” makes it sound like they did something extraordinary instead of the passive, overprivileged experience it actually was.

Even “astronaut” is pushing it somewhat.

  3. wibbly-water Avatar

Were they given roles? Checks they had to complete? ETC?

If not then yeah they are passengers.

But if they had roles that made sure the mission went smoothly then it makes sense to consider them crew.

  4. DaVirus Avatar

They were “crew” in the legal sense so the ship doesn’t have to meet safety regulations for commercial craft.

They are given “advisor” roles to dodge regulations, that is it.

  5. Davien636 Avatar

    Were the actual crew female?
Seems more important than whether the passengers are crew or not in terms of the accuracy of headlines.

  6. EvieStarbrite Avatar

Taking a trip on a boat doesn’t make you a sailor.

Taking a trip for five minutes into the upper atmosphere doesn’t make you an astronaut.

Also, Katy Perry fucking sucks and this is the only way her name stays relevant.

  7. Spacemonk587 Avatar

They weren’t even in space, so..

  8. TwitterWWE Avatar

Agreed. The entire thing lasted around 60 minutes. It’s an overpriced carnival ride.

  9. greencasio Avatar

I thought the same thing, it ain’t a crew if they are just sitting there lol

  10. LeoLaDawg Avatar

Agree. They were on a thrill ride.

  11. Neat_Suit3684 Avatar

I don’t think this is unpopular. No one believes them as crew for a second.

  12. ProblemSavings8686 Avatar

Actual astronauts who train in science, engineering, aeronautics, survival training, medical training etc to go on missions to push the limits of human knowledge and exploration whilst adapting to life in orbit… versus rich company bring famous and influential people to edge of space for a few minutes… I know which I would say is more inspirational

  13. Fine_Cap402 Avatar

Bunch of useless narcissists playing make-believe. What else is new?

  14. Proletarian_Tear Avatar

Furthermore it was not all female passengers, it was all millionaire passengers

  15. Not-User-Serviceable Avatar

I agree they were passengers, but I hope they were fully advised of the risks.

If they were, then they are much braver than I… and I respect them for that.

  16. Imaginary_Ambition78 Avatar

No one who hasnt gone through the training that astronauts go through can call themselves an astronaut. Not jeff bezos, not just any rich person, bcz unless u had tasks to do up there, u are just a passenger

  17. Joy_3DMakes Avatar

‘Passive, overprivileged’ – I’m not afraid to admit that I would 100% do the same thing if I had the money. I just hope that commercial space flight does become slightly affordable in my life time.

The real question is, why are you so butt hurt over it? The flight did contain females only. And she is a celebrity so of course that type of thing would make the news.

  18. Shferitz Avatar

So was Bezos and Shatner and whoever else has gone up. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  19. Radioactivocalypse Avatar

    Agreed

I think in time we’ll see changes to what we call “astronauts” and “crew”

In a few years, maybe in the 2030s I reckon we’ll see lots more celebrities like going to space. And then we’ll need a way to distinguish them from people who are actually working in space, as opposed to passing through.

  20. meatballinthemic Avatar

    Popular opinion 👍

  21. Pale-Turnip2931 Avatar

If you pay enough someone will call you whatever you want. They are simply getting buttered up because they paid millions of dollars.

  22. KnightFromNowhere Avatar

It was a joy ride to space. Nobody earned a spot. They went on a joyride on one of the passengers boyfriends rockets. Nothing of scientific significance was done. Just a bunch of fuel burnt for nothing and now we will have to listen to Katy Perry screech about how important mother earth.

  23. Sorry-Programmer9826 Avatar

Yeah, the whole thing has really pissed my girlfriend off. The fakeness of the whole thing. As if it’s somehow empowering.

It’s absolutely fine if some people want to go on a tourist trip. But don’t pretend its something that it isn’t

  24. 2K84Man Avatar

Like when spaceX said they did a spacewalk and then just stuck their body out of the hatch like its a sunroof

  25. Young_Old_Grandma Avatar

    They’re space tourists.

    They’re not astronauts.

Anyone can go to space by paying money.

It takes mad skills to operate a ship, stay in space for long periods of time, and successfully land back to earth.

Those are the people I’m focusing my attention to. Not these people.

  26. Impossible-Aspect342 Avatar

Flying in a plane does not make you a pilot. This is Disney world for rich, entitled people.

  27. Lexter2112 Avatar

It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye. The first commercial spaceflight disaster will change things. Saying that, I would go up in a heartbeat.

  28. WhoDoesntLikeADonut Avatar

    “Cargo” is probably the word

  29. CaptainNoskills Avatar

The whole thing was really cringe, I wouldn’t know where to start

  30. AdvocatingForPain Avatar

Theyre space tourists and glorifying that is beyond stupid.

  31. NotA_Drug_Dealer Avatar

Not really an opinion but an objective fact. Passengers are not crew

  32. l339 Avatar

I mean I think it’s a stretch for anyone to say that this is as extraordinary, even if it was an actual space flight for work

  33. etymoticears Avatar

    Girlbosses gotta girlboss

  34. ryohazuki224 Avatar

Yeah, they’re more just glorified space tourists, barely touching the edge of what we consider “space”

  35. VariousLandscape2336 Avatar

    But, they were women..in space!

  36. snipdockter Avatar

    Spam in a can.

  37. EarthDwellant Avatar

I hate to use the word Bimbo, but in the 70s we’d would have called it the Bimbo Flight. These women put themselves into a position of claiming some kind of worthiness to go into space with a lack of purpose for the incredibly high carbon footprint this leaves behind just to get pics of their hair blowing in the wind and bouncing off of their Big Lips.

  38. Mr-MuffinMan Avatar

not unpopular to be fair. i agree.

also, idea: for every rocket sent to the “edge of space” for no fucking reason by a private company, they are fined a $50 billion dollar fine for environmental harm.

send some fucking shit that ACTUALLY helps us. this “space race” amongst billionaires is just a glorified dick measuring contest that serves no purpose. no we’re not going to colonize mars in maybe even a thousand years, no we’re not going to have $150 dollar tickets to space where we stare at earth from space for a few minutes and drop down

  39. Educational_Skirt_81 Avatar

You’re right but I don’t think this is an unpopular opinion. Most people seem to think it is kind of a self indulgent farce.

  40. Infamous-Bed9010 Avatar

Furthermore there was no scientific purpose for the trip. It was pure tourism.

They did not even control the space capsule, it was remote controlled on earth by a team of men.

  41. OJSimpsons Avatar

I figured that out when I saw Katy Perry’s name in the headline.

  42. Anonymous_13218 Avatar

I’m going to agree with this one. I do not consider those who fly with Blue Origin to be astronauts. You’re not contributing to scientific advancements, you’re a supporting a billionaire trying to capitalize on the one sacred place we have left. I’m in school to be an astrophysicist, space is my life and my passion; I despise Blue Origin and the whole concept of “space tourism”. Leave it alone.

  43. Garchompisbestboi Avatar

Come on OP, I think you’re being a little needlessly harsh. They spent 10 WHOLE MINUTES at the lowest possible altitude legally determined to count as “space”. They might have even almost felt the effects of microgravity during their trip!

  44. chandleya Avatar

Exactly. No one would care if:

    • there was no press event
    • no one said anything about it
    • these “ladies” didn’t tarnish so many “firsts” with their “richest person to X” awards
  45. Admirable-Zoner Avatar

Wtf is the point of all this bullshit when we actually have female astronauts in space at the current moment. This is just rich people experiencing novelty.

  46. CraftPrestigious8995 Avatar

It’s like saying the passenger in a dirt rally car giving directions does all the hard work.

  47. VariousLandscape2336 Avatar

Too bad they didn’t choose OceanGate

  48. decixare Avatar

They’re not “crew” or “astronauts” the same way a passenger on a plane isn’t a pilot, or a hiker on Everest isn’t a Sherpa. Some titles can only be achieved through hard work and dedication, not bought

  49. JStewy21 Avatar

This isn’t an unpopular opinion. Boooo

  50. Average_Potato42 Avatar

    Cargo. They were cargo.

  51. doomsdaysayers Avatar

The funniest thing ever could have happened, maybe they want to appreciate earth from the titan submersible next?

  52. yourstruly912 Avatar

Valentina Tereshkova’s Vostok 6 mission had only one crew member (herself) so technically it’s already the first all female crew

  53. Spiderinahumansuit Avatar

I think this is a popular opinion for normal people, unpopular with news networks for some reason.

Honestly, calling them “crew” seems kind of insulting to actual female astronauts.

Also, Valentina Tereshkova made a solo flight, so it wasn’t even the first all-female space flight.

  54. Utterlybored Avatar

Wait, Katie Perry is not a trained astrophysicist?

  55. Akumu9K Avatar

This is not unpopular tbh. But absolutely agreed, its just a carnival joyride for rich fucks that erases the actual accomplishments of actual female astronauts in favor of some privileged billionares

  56. Brunchovereverything Avatar

They’re trying to make it all about feminism and female empowerment and I don’t see how one thing relates to another. You’re literally not doing anything ground breaking because you did not create the flying device, you didn’t stay for a long sustained amount of time to look for discoveries and you didn’t come back with any new info for us to learn. It’s literally a vanity trip and the cost of that I’m sure could’ve fed a city of impoverished kids in America. And all they could talk about was getting glam for the trip. How fucking dumb.

  57. deadlygaming11 Avatar

I agree. They weren’t actually trained how use the vessel outside of how to sit down, strap in, and keep themselves safe. If anything went wrong it was someone else’s job to fix it and not theres.

  58. SailorMars1986 Avatar

I have not stopped dying with the cringe for these women.
Imagine your whole lives work is leading to you getting into space, and KP just rocks up in her space suit from the joke shop.

  59. Late-Reputation1396 Avatar

What’s wild is when jeff bezos went on the rocket ride everyone was condemning him, how evil he is, how much wasted money, all kinds of crap. Katie Perry and some rich girls go for a ride and you got Oprah and the kardashians out there in tears the whole area full of women joined at the arm swaying and crying like it was some monumental event. Bunch of rich people went on a rocket ride … big deal

  60. notedrive Avatar

Wait, they weren’t flying it, they were just riding along?

  61. fr33lancr Avatar

WOW. I had no clue. Thanks for the information. I really don’t care, but that headline is completely misleading.

  62. von_klauzewitz Avatar

fake women. space tourists. in a giant penis. for an Amazon commercial.

  63. MIKEPENCES_THIGHGAP Avatar

Katy Perry acting like she’s fcking Sally Ride.

  64. terryjuicelawson Avatar

Very possibly but it is interesting as a lot of unqualified people have gone into space, but it doesn’t get hyperanalysed in this way, only when it is women.

  65. HighJeanette Avatar

    It was utterly disgusting

  66. RezzOnTheRadio Avatar

Yeah that was the first thing I thought lol. Thought I was about to hear of some cool mission to the ISS or something not a bunch of rich Soccer mom’s taking a day trip to space before mimosas a brunch

  67. OnTheHill7 Avatar

Valentina Tereshkova has something to say about that title.

  68. CyanideMuffin67 Avatar

They are just rich passengers… Nothing more, nothing less. Why get so crazy over this?

  69. Archon-Toten Avatar

    >the first all female crew

It was reported here, “the first all female crew since 1963.”

Which we have a word for. It’s called second.

  70. Frank_the_NOOB Avatar

If you don’t go into orbit did you REALLY go into space

  71. broketoliving Avatar

six women in a cockpit doesn’t make a crew

  72. CyanideMuffin67 Avatar

What I wonder about these flights with celebrities is this? What contingencies are there if something were to go wrong, however small, a computer glitch or something. Do they have backup plans?

  73. SafeOdd1736 Avatar

When they started yelling “oh my goddess” I was so embarrassed for them. Like imagine being that cringey that you planned out phrases to say like that?

  74. zeez1011 Avatar

I wish we could move on and pretend this didn’t happen. I don’t care that a bunch of famous women who didn’t deserve to go into space rode on Bezos’ cock rocket.

  75. FreakshowMode Avatar

Why let the truth get in the way of a good story! Seems to be the way the world is these days.

  76. FreakshowMode Avatar

I would have been more impressed if they donated the cost of the flight tickets to charity instead. The effects would have been much more impactful and longer lasting.

  77. builderboy2037 Avatar

they also slipped up and called them astronauts. absolutely not. I totally agree they were just passengers.

  78. pinniped90 Avatar

It wasn’t even the first all female space(ish) ride.

Russia launched an ACTUAL SOLO FEMALE COSMONAUT fully into space, where she had real technical duties and orbited the planet before returning.

They did this like 50 years ago, but she didn’t post it on Instagram and use it to sell products so maybe it shouldn’t count…

  79. Analyst-Effective Avatar

    It was a dei move.

They can be called whatever they want, just don’t expect them to do anything

  80. Jasmisne Avatar

From what it seems like two of them were actual scientists but yeah, this was just a disgrace to the planet. We accomplished nothing by doing it except pandering to some rich people and burning a fuck ton of fuel

  81. UtopiaRat Avatar

I assume there still needs to be an actual crew, even if all the passengers are women. So to make this statement the pilot or whatever other crew was aboard would need to be female.

  82. Timely-Salt-1067 Avatar

I’m just amazed the wigs stayed on.

  83. tacticalpotatopeeler Avatar

    Suni Williams is an astronaut

Katy Perry is not an astronaut

What a disgrace to actual female astronaut crew members.

  84. DJ__PJ Avatar

The entire notion of wasting space flights on billionaires is honestly disgusting. As long as any space flight is hella expensive, time consuming and ressource intensive, the only ones on such flights shouldlbe scientists that can do something useful with that time.

If you want a billionaire-worthy joyride, go build a submarine

  85. dermsUK Avatar

The all-round hubris to publicise this event amongst everything that’s happening is genuinely astonishing, I’ve not seen a single internet user since it happened receive it positively.

  86. Jathaniel_Aim Avatar

Downvote because this is not an unpopular opinion this is just what happened. The fact that this has 2000 up votes because you’re stating a fact just shows you how little this subreddit actually means

  87. sobloodytired13 Avatar

Bunch of rich people going a bit higher then a commerical flight, didn’t go to space and didn’t do anything to earn being up there.

Gods but i hope the next rich flight explodes.

  88. Round_Caregiver2380 Avatar

What was the gender of the people flying it? If they were women then it was all female crew but the celebrities weren’t part of that crew. If men were controlling it then it’s clearly bollocks.

If it was completely controlled by people on the ground, they’re still just passengers.

  89. Many-Wasabi9141 Avatar

    Who flew the rocket?

  90. largestcob Avatar

just in case no one else has mentioned it yet, this should not apply to amanda nguyen! she’s the only exception!

  91. Scrumpyguzzler Avatar

    Just like the OceanGate sub

  92. FloydEGag Avatar

This was a pointless, egregiously wasteful exercise that had no value other than publicity. It’s not even as though they’re the first women in space, if you can call that going into space. Sorry Jeff, all this hoopla still won’t make you taller or less bald

  93. Zealousideal_Neck829 Avatar

One of these ladies, Amanda Nguyen, was previously in an astronaut training program that often collaborated, but is not associated, with NASA. The name of the program was the International Institute of Astronautical Sciences and they have had at least one graduate be selected as a NASA astronaut. I would say she could be considered the ‘crew member’ with the most experience. As an aside, her life story, how she came into and out the astronaut program, is pretty interesting and inspiring I’d say. You can read about it from Wikipedia.
