Family members working in research fields have had their jobs threatened repeatedly with the redhat war on education, prices are shittier than they were even under Biden, and I wake up every morning more disgusted at what this country has become
Political dialogue among friends and family has always been fraught, but it’s at a whole new low now. Half of my family can’t talk about politics at all without burning up friendships. The Right has gone full “Dear Leader,” and The Left cannot find a suitable candidate to go up against someone with dozens of felonies who sa’d a woman and setup up a fake school to defraud his fans and pretended the election was stolen from him. So, everyday? Picking and choosing what you say, freaking out or holding your breath, and looking at all our leaders as failures.
It’s raining a lot too.
Everything is getting more expensive, and every social interaction is way more tense. It feels like everyone I interact with is either infuriatingly out of the loop or on edge. Almost no in between.
Day to day, not much has changed except that things are noticeably more expensive. However, as a gay married woman living in southern Louisiana, I feel a lot more anxiety, fear, and dread with every headline. We kind of feel like sitting ducks, waiting for them to come after us next. I also think a lot of us feel more helpless than we did before – a sort of “when will someone do something to save us?” type of helplessness. So, yeah, to echo what others have said: similar but more expensive and with more anxiety.
A lot of my friends have been laid off. My wife lost her job. My bills are higher than ever. Groceries cost more. Literally everything is more expensive
I am a federal scientist for NOAA and -although we didn’t have high hopes to not get fired- we just found out we’re getting dismantled completely sooooo . Other jobs in science fields are getting scarcer by the minute, as well. It sucks!
401k took a dive, but I’m far from retirement, so I’m not worried.
Prices are high. Are they higher?
Things that directly impact me: I work in imported commodities and the tariffs have thrown everything into a tailspin. My wife works for a law-firm this has a very high likelihood of being in Trump’s crosshairs.
Everything he does is bad. He’s now moving into the realm of scary. Targeting lawfirms and deporting people who are legally here is the stuff of 1930s authoritarianism.
My entire family has been advised to carry their passports/birth certificates and SSN on them in the instance someone questions citizenship.
I am a graduate student and I was due to apply for a NIH grant but was unable due to harsh attitudes towards DEI. The NSF fellowship I applied for reduced the amount of awards given by 56% this year and I was not one of the lucky ones. As a result, I continue to work a full time job along my full time research efforts (working 7 days a week). Making me less present for my partner and step child while I pursue higher education with the intention of getting a better paying job to afford the rising cost of living.
My current job that pays me has paused promotions and raises due to University funding concerns so I am being given additional responsibility with my seniority with no additional compensation.
My entire gynecologist practice closed in early March and I currently no longer have a GYN.
I did not expect so many aspects of my life to be affected by this administration so quickly and upset is an understatement for the feelings I have on a regular basis.
Well I worked as a core engineer at a Seacoast Nuclear Power Plant. We take in ocean water, filter it and use it to cool the cores. A 21 year old from Dodge came in and told us our jobs were a waste in government spending. So now the core lays unattended and will over heat in the next 55 days. This overheat will cause a meltdown equal to an atomic bomb taking out 12 square miles of the surrounding area killing thousands.
But other then that fine.
Let me preface my response with my knowledge of Trump prior to his candidacy. I owned a golf business for 40 years and voted mostly Republican.
I knew most of my competitors around the country and often chatted with several. One competitor, who did business with Trump, said don’t or suffer the consequences. Another told me of Trump’s lying and blatant cheating about his golf game as a result of personal experience. Another had a contract, for several hundred thousand $, which Trump attempted to bully, the owner who did the work, into accepting 75% of the contracted amount.
How has my life changed? I have very little respect for “most” Republicans. I did not vote for Trump and never will. I learned that there are far more people who lack the ability to think critically, than I realized. In other words, the number of people who still support him have taught me that there are far more people who are easily scammed / conned than I ever thought possible. Alarm bells should have been going off long before the day he was sworn in and made the outrageous crowd claims which began the chaos of this presidency.
Instead of a tax cut, I am paying more.
When any news program airs him making a statement, I immediately change the channel so I don’t get angry. Every time he says “to be honest” “we will see what happens” “in all honesty”, I know he is either lying or has no idea what he is talking about.
I am embarrassed when visiting a foreign country because I can feel how the citizens view Americans as a result of Trump.
As a military veteran and officer I am extremely concerned that Trump has placed war hawks, such as Bolton and Pompeo, in positions of power.
I think we’re still just at the tip of the iceberg of the “Find out” section of “fucking around and finding out.” Groceries are a little more expensive. ICE raids are more common (and visible). You turn on the news everyday wondering what insane thing is happening now. If you have friends working in the federal government (we do), they are insanely stressed out, worried about their jobs- losing their jobs and just dealing with the day to day stress coming down on them from on high. LGBTQA folks are terrified. All of our queer friends, as soon as Trump won, began taking extra legal steps to protect themselves and their families and even plotting “escape routes” out of the country.
I live in a blue state and that shields us from A LOT but what I can say is that even if life feels normal/the same there’s just this… cloud of fear that sort of permeates everything for a lot of us.
I’m a trans college student. My life has looked mostly the same except that there’s a lot more fear from people around me. I’m leaving the country in September for school and we had to do extra prep work in case I wouldn’t be able to come back.
My work essentially has a hiring freeze and a promotion freeze, the latter of which affects me because I was potentially up for promotion soon. We had a good 2024 but seem to be incredibly focused on expense management lately.
Day to day? Fine. And I think that’s true for most people. And that’s the problem.
Trump is doing real damage to our country, but the inertia is huge and most of the problems he’s creating now won’t have serious consequences for months or years. So people who are inclined to like Trump see all the complaints as Chicken-little talk. They don’t understand why we built all these systems the way we did. They don’t understand why our government powers were separated like they were. They don’t understand trade or supply chain or international relations. They don’t understand any of it. They just know their day-to-day is fine and Democrats are complaining about stuff and they’re glad someone finally stood up against the trans people and the immigrants.
People who have retirement savings saw it take a huge hit, but even there, it doesn’t impact your day-to-day… yet.
A lot of my friends have gone radio silent. There’s a lot of people who’ve had their aunts, uncles, and cousins disappear. One of my friends is now caring for her niece because her father just didn’t come home from work and no one knows where he is.
Several of my friends who did government work, stuff like monitoring water supply for hazardous chemicals, investigating sources of hazardous waste, or ensuring the logging companies only sort of break the rules, have been fired.
I’m making a lot more food boxes to hand out from the church
Feeling very unsettled. There is no logic behind what he’s trying to do with respect to tariffs. DOGE efforts are sketchy at best. Deporting what appears to be some immigrants without merit is troubling.
My father in law a Vietnam vet who has worked religiously for his entire life tear up because they are raising his taxes, his insurance and increasing his pharmaceutical cost as well as cost of living. He’s spent his entire retirement terrified they will take away the social security he paid so much into.
My friends mom cried as she was explaining she would only live a week without her medication & she’s having to give up living on her own due to cost of living.
I lost my job in a nonprofit and had to let a staff of 15 go. My family of nurses, doctors and scientists have been let go due to funding.
No one around me has not been affected in a negative way. We are all poor or barely breaking into middle class. So I doubt anyone is losing in the stock market. But we loose daily with the higher cost of living and the unnecessary stress on the elderly.
Then, we have to come to terms of what we will accept in our lives on a daily basis. While feeling helpless , knowing it’s up to our generation to fix the problems and not leave them to our children.
I’m going to be honest. Other than not buying eggs, not much has changed around me. My work makes a lot of products in the US already, and it’s a more cost-effective alternative. During covid, we were super busy.
We did get the tariff email, but it was more of a “wait and see” email. I avoid reality as much as possible. I’m a single woman with no kids, and I’m also an older millennial, so once in a lifetime events are just the norm. Lol
I’ve also been poor my whole life, so I’m already frugal and live within my means. 🤷♀️
I am an optometrist. There have been an uptick in patients with longstanding autoimmune diseases having flares of their uveitis and other ocular inflammatory conditions likely due to stress 🙁
I was planning on retiring this month but my 401(k) says otherwise.
My friends in the military, at the VA, and several other industries have all been affected in a bad way.
One family friend, a rabid Trump supporter, is a doctor for the VA. Morale is terrible there and it’s only going to get worse. Another friend is an SVP at a major media company. Hiring freeze plus spending freeze is in effect.
Another family friend is a military pilot. She was the captain of a historic mission, the first to go into combat. Her accomplishment was scrubbed from the US Air Force website.
Meanwhile, some gay and trans people I know are buying guns and learning how to shoot.
I am embarrassed on the daily to be an American with this current administration in office, oh and my 401K has been reduced by 20% in the past several weeks. Good times.
Comments
Same, but more expensive, and a growing sense of dread about what else this moron is planning.
Groceries are getting more expensive, and my wife’s job has lost access to a lot of grants that used to fund them thanks to DOGE.
A new focus on efficiency at work for no reason. They’re like, “We need to be more efficient!” And I’m like, “….for what?”
That hiring is basically stopping altogether is probably the only legitimate reason.
Family members working in research fields have had their jobs threatened repeatedly with the redhat war on education, prices are shittier than they were even under Biden, and I wake up every morning more disgusted at what this country has become
but it’s still going to get so much worse
This one guy at work can’t retire now, so who knows how much longer I have to deal with his BS.
Everything is more expensive. My 401K is getting hammered.
If I’m being completely honest. Pretty much the same. That said, I don’t know what my answer will be in 2 years from now.
I have lost a shitload in my IRA’s, retired 3 years ago with more than I have now.
Political dialogue among friends and family has always been fraught, but it’s at a whole new low now. Half of my family can’t talk about politics at all without burning up friendships. It’s raining a lot too.
It feels like there is no more right or wrong, no more separation of powers, and the economy of the US and maybe the world is going into a nosedive.
I am from Argentina . When milei came to power two years ago . He promised lower prices , end inflation end poverty .
Now we have higher grocery prices , more inflation , more poverty .
So brace yourselves .
Everything is getting more expensive, and every social interaction is way more tense. It feels like everyone I interact with is either infuriatingly out of the loop or on edge. Almost no in between.
I work at a seaport, so longshoremen and truck drivers are definitely freaking out as their jobs are vaporizing.
If they’ve been deported to an El Salvadorian gulag by ICE they’re unlikely to have access to Reddit.
I’m sure a lot of people’s lives looked the same until the day they ended up in a prison in El Salvador.
I own a small restaurant. All my prices are increasing especially supplies.

Weekly status meetings now include the phrase “this client’s plans are now on hold because of the tariffs” quite a lot.

I have a Canadian friend who won’t be making her yearly visit to the state for the foreseeable future
No president has had a more negative impact on my financial well being than Trump has
More anxiety, people seem ruder and more stressed. Everything is more expensive, it’s awful, exhausting, and terrifying.
Everyday worries about my SSI and Medicaid being cut, and Elon are his minions having access to my personal information 😔🤬

I’m the IT guy for a school district. I just started in November, and now I’m wondering if I’ll have a job in a year.
