My 70 year-old dad is unhappy with his marriage to my mom, but he won’t take steps to improve his quality of life because he is so submissive. AMA

They’ve been married for over 40 years. In recent months, he frequently just sits and looks at YouTube videos about becoming a more assertive man, but it leads to nothing.

Back in the fall, he and I had a discussion about things he’d like to do when he dies. “Go the Grand Canyon”, he said. I have a conversation with my parents about it (both of them present) and I pitch the idea to my mom about doing a father-son trip to the Grand Canyon. She’s not happy about it and he sits there and says nothing. I chastised him afterwards for not speaking up for something he says he wants for his life.

Why did you exclude your mother? Does she travel without your dad?

He wants to go to the Grand Canyon “when” he dies? I think God could arrange that.

Did you mean ‘before’ he dies?
