SNL shouldnt have apologized for making fun of Aimee Lou Wood

r/

Was it not a flattering portrayal of her? It was not. But there have been a ton of celebrities and politicians and other public figures who have received not the most flattering portrayals on SNL for 50 years. With comedy sometimes you’re gonna piss people off with your portrayal of them. Whether it succeeded in being funny or not is a different question. But if you want to make fun of public figures you cant give everyone an apology whenever they bitch and moan and demand one out of you.

There’s making fun of a person, and making fun of a physical feature of them that they didn’t choose. Making fun of her teeth was too childish.

  3. ConiferousTurtle Avatar

They should’ve apologized for doing that skit, because it was not funny at all.

  4. Loud-Scarcity6213 Avatar

Well given a lot of the SNL cast are outspoken liberals, it seems hypocritical as fuck to make fun of someone for a physical attribute they can’t control. Rules for thee and not for me?

  5. Uhhyt231 Avatar

The issue is they made fun of everyone else’s character and bed actual appearance. Plenty of jokes flop. Nothing was lost from apologizing

  6. animus_invictus Avatar

Insane that this is even close to an unpopular opinion. It’s a comedy show. Tell the poor celebrity to suck it up.

  7. Fillitupgood Avatar

The issue was that everyone else was mocking a politician. There was literally no purpose for making fun of her eyes and teeth.

  8. Necessary_Position77 Avatar

I’d agree. It’s a caricature. Cartoonists do this ALL THE TIME and she’s a public figure. Personally I think it’s ok while I also don’t mind her teeth, they make her uniquely her.

  9. Dung_Beetle_2LT Avatar

No comedian should apologize for making fun of anyone. Jesters privilege should still exist.

  10. Mid_July_Diamond16 Avatar

I think mocking the Menendez brothers was worse.

  11. HeyWhatIsThatThingy Avatar

Fuck no, never apologize for jokes that fail to land. You gotta take shots that miss sometimes

  12. BusyBeeBridgette Avatar

If you are in the public eye people will say unsavory things. It is one of the things you have to grow a thick skin for if you are going to survive in the lime light otherwise it will devour you. Making fun of something she can’t help was rather a low hanging fruit. But they shouldn’t have apologised for it. Offense is taken, not given after all.

  13. heavybees Avatar

Overall, I agree that SNL shouldn’t have apologized. In some ways, I found it was a bit unnecessarily mean towards ALW, especially given that she was the only one whose personal features were joked about in the sketch.

But her whole woe is me, “I’m Ugly” thing since the sketch is totally weak as well. I find it to be her garnering sympathy for what is largely a non-issue — and that’s coming from someone who enjoyed her work in the White Lotus and thinks shes actually quite pretty. Jokes about British people’s teeth are commonplace in America, we don’t need a whole long rant about how mean SNL is because of common joke in a singular sketch.

  14. 0KOKay Avatar

They should probably stick with white vs black jokes with Che. /s

  15. Legion1117 Avatar

SNL did what SNL does – They made a joke.

    GTF Over it.

  16. HOLYCRAPGIVEMEANAME Avatar

I had to google who this was, and after realizing, I’m sure their sketch was nothing worse than what everyone said in their home while watching The White Lotus.

  17. twhiting9275 Avatar

    yeah, SNL mocking someone…. whaaaaaaat?
    I agree

  18. mdoelrk Avatar

It’s called a caricature. It’s a comedy show and granted it might not be everyone’s cup of tea but it is what SNL does. Comedic sketches.

  19. SuperTune2540 Avatar

Agree. If you know anything about acting, you know that your physical appearance being scrutinized is part of the gig. That’s not to say that she deserves getting teased, but that she literally got hired because of her entire appearance, teeth included. Her teeth aren’t a bug, they’re a feature. To suggest she doesn’t deserve teeth shame is to admit her teeth are weird. Also, this is SNL we’re talking about. Impressions are half of the whole show. This is what they do.

  20. billiemint Avatar

Nobody forced them to apologize, but they know they fucked up with that unnecessary joke. And yes, it’s not funny and no it’s not a different question. They apologized because they know it’s not even funny. It’s fine to acknowledge your mistakes.

  21. BetLeft Avatar

    feels like a PR stunt.

if she didn’t draw attention to it everyone would have forgotten it by 2am Sunday.

it wasn’t a flattering portrayal but, as a heretofore virtual unknown, why not just be happy to have become relevant enough to mock?

now scores of folks who would have never seen the show are talking about the show. maybe even have started watching it.

millions now know her name and people of significant prominence in her industry surely are rushing to her defense in all sorts of ways. she will make innumerable contacts she might not have otherwise.

she wins all the way around, other than having been reminded of how mirrors work.

  22. McFlyyouBojo Avatar

I agree with the double edged sword being that if you are gonna make fun of someone, it better be funny, and while I haven’t seen this particular skit, only does not have a great track record in recent years for its comedy hitting.

  23. spilly_talent Avatar

Nah it was the wrong context. Everyone else in that skit being mocked was a political figure. And then randomly they were like lol also fuck that one actress’s teeth let’s make fun of her too.

    Just felt forced and mean.

  24. Successful_Craft3076 Avatar

You are right, and like always reddit is fast to feel offended and rush to rescue. South park did things a hundred times worse than this. Family guy too. Hell SNL too. Comedy might feel mean or personal, the person subjected to it might feel bad or offended or hurt. What should we do? Stop making comedy? Do what Will Smith did and start assaulting others? Or do we feel offended only when we like the person who is being ridiculed?Things much more serious are happening normally. Character assassination is one of them. Inciting violence against a group of people is another. Making fun of a celebrity is not one. People are getting too soft.

  25. Ayeronxnv Avatar

She’s an actress, putting herself out there for the whole world to see. She knows her mouth is fucked up, she can afford to get it fixed if she wants, but she clearly isn’t that insecure about it. SNL makes fun of a lot of people, why should she be off limits? I think it’s weak they apologized. Getting offended over every little thing so tiring anymore.

  26. SteveCastGames Avatar

Without context I’m inclined to agree. It’s a sketch comedy show. If you’re so fragile as to require an apology you’re probably in the wrong business.

  27. Rude_Yam2872 Avatar

Kinda on the fence about this. Yeah, celebrities need to have thicker skin but also it felt like SNL was punching down.

  28. OwlieSkywarn Avatar

Idk, I might want an apology if I ever watched SNL and knew who Amee Lou Wood was

  29. salbrown Avatar

Frankly I felt the sketch was pretty mean spirited, but honestly I think my biggest issue was how fucking lazy the whole thing was. Like cheap shots at someone’s appearance is one of the laziest types of joke writing imo. You don’t need to be clever or creative, just know what features to mock. We’re in a social climate where I think we could really use some insightful yet scathing social commentary, something they used to be able to do. But instead we get shallow, lazy jokes that say nothing and challenge no one. Not every joke needs to have 1000 layers but when every single one is near skin deep, it says something to me. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that many well loved staff/writers are walking away from the show recently.

I guess it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth when they’ll use their show to mock someone’s teeth but are too cowardly to actually challenge people who deserve to be taken down a peg. But I’m also pretty sick of SNL and all the dumb bullshit leadership been doing lately anyways, so that’s definitely coloring the way I feel about this whole thing.

  30. Hefty-Station1704 Avatar

It’s all nothing more than free publicity for all involved. A little media manipulation to keep a few names in the headlines for a day.

  31. thatkilliankid Avatar

Genuine question… Isn’t SNL’s whole purpose to poke fun and be a satirical show?

  32. Wesus Avatar

    Did they actually apologize?

  33. Inevitable-Sense740 Avatar

Aimee Lou Wood herself pointed out that the rest of the skit targeted politicians and aimed higher, while her character was singled out for superficial ridicule. Comedy should punch up, not down, and this felt like a cheap shot at her appearance rather than an attempt at intelligent humor. The apology was warranted, and SNL should focus on crafting smarter jokes instead of resorting to mockery that adds nothing to the sketch

  34. wwaxwork Avatar

When they mock the politicians etc their looks are a secondary part of the joke not the joke. This was simply a bunch of men saying I do not find that woman attractive lets laugh at her. Of course they had to fucking apologise.

  35. Utterlybored Avatar

Celebrities have surrendered their rights to being made fun of. Sorry, that’s part of the deal.

  36. polishboisrbest Avatar

Maybe more unpopular: I just don’t find SNL funny at all.

  37. Adventurous_Click331 Avatar

The celebrity was complaining about “punching down” but aren’t celebrities part of the elite? If you can’t make fun of the elite like celebrities, then who can you make fun of?

Also, apologizing for every joke that doesn’t land is a slippery slope.

  38. ThePumpk1nMaster Avatar

Whether it’s right or wrong, it’s a distraction from the Trump narrative. He’s the real butt of the joke. Every breath spent on Aimee is ignoring the whole point of the skit

  39. DilapidatedHam Avatar

There is that saying that comedy is getting away with it, and in this instance they didn’t get away with it. If they had more clever material, or picked a target people were more on board with making fun of, there wouldn’t have been controversy. But instead they made fun of a generally liked/neutral actress and went for the lowest hanging fruit

  40. TheHungryChud Avatar

SNL should apologize for not being funny in general.

  41. AndyGreyjoy Avatar

    Was it funny: no.

    Was it mean: yes.

Was it worth being offended by: probably not.

  42. Privacy-Boggle Avatar

SNL should be shot from a rocket and into the sun.

  43. Mordkillius Avatar

They made a caricature of her…. fair game. Just like the painters on the boardwalk who will draw a caricature of you and your date. They make you look ugly based on obvious characteristics.

Snl pussied out and this lady is a baby

  44. AceOfSpades532 Avatar

Mockery and satire’s good when it’s making fun of what people do or how they behave, not when they just insulted her appearance and that was the entire joke.

  45. blac_sheep90 Avatar

It’s a classy move to apologize even if you don’t necessarily have to.

  46. heckfyre Avatar

I’ll say this is unpopular only because there is no reason that doing comedy automatically absolves you from apologizing to someone.

They made a joke, the person who was the butt of the joke was like “that’s not super cool and I don’t appreciate it.” Joker says “ok sorry, we actually really like you.”

    Seems like a fine exchange

  47. ConsiderationFew8399 Avatar

I mean the purpose of the apology is to make SNL look better. Considering there were photos of her going about crying this probably helped at that. I don’t imagine most adults would be happy that she was upset

  48. 500rockin Avatar

This isn’t an unpopular opinion. It’s a bad one.

  49. x_broham_x Avatar

Exactly. She’s an actress who can afford to fix her teeth but obviously chooses not to because they’re part of her appeal. They’re obviously big ass teeth and she knows it. Its comedy, get over it.

  50. Intelligent_Pop1173 Avatar

Yes they should have and not just because it’s the right thing to do. From a PR perspective, this was becoming a trending topic and Wood had a ton of support on her side. It would have been much worse if they didn’t say anything.

  51. AwarenessOther224 Avatar

If it isn’t funny…then you’re just trolling and I didn’t tune in for that. Apologizing recognizes that it wasn’t funny and therefore not suitable.

  52. Pure-Plankton-4606 Avatar

SNL should apologize for being garbage

  53. scbalazs Avatar

Wait they just emphasized her large teeth, that’s it?

  54. flirtmcdudes Avatar

You can make fun of someone if the joke is well done.… but if the joke is just “look at her teeth, they look stupid” that’s not really a good joke and just seems like you’re being a dick

  55. bienenstush Avatar

Usually if you upset someone, it’s nice to apologize. She’s a human being

  56. Lylibean Avatar

    Who? Never heard of her.

  57. Lumpy_Flight3088 Avatar

I think when you see yourself as morally superior it comes across as hypocritical. But they’ve made fun of people with limb difference before so they are just scummy in general I think and the moral superiority angle is a total farce.

  58. tk10000000 Avatar

SNL should apologize for continuing to air at this point. If there’s a musical act I like or an interesting host I’ll check it out sometimes, and it hardly gets even a chuckle out of me for the entire show. Like why is it so bad now??? That skit wasn’t funny, and I really can’t understand how anyone can really get through an entire episode.

And if they wanted to use shock value to make fun of the appearance of an actually really cool person, it should actually be funny.

  59. knallpilzv2 Avatar

    I haven’t seen the sketch.

But I read it was supposedly “punching down”.

Since when is parodying well-paid actors and celebrities “punching down” though?

  60. rimbaud0000 Avatar

It was really feeble and unpleasant

  61. ForwardLavishness320 Avatar

    They apologised to Dan Crenshaw

  62. No-Celebration3097 Avatar

I agree and thanks for including politicians in portrayals on SNL. SNL has always been been political and jabs both sides.

  63. Chhbaiguy Avatar

SNL is garbage anyway. Humour is very outdated. Let it go

  64. Unusual-Election8702 Avatar

The issue is SNL isn’t funny and can only go for cheap low hanging fruit :/

  65. nopester24 Avatar

SNL should’ve fucked off sooner. it hasn’t been funny for a decade

  66. zeus_amador Avatar

People still care/watch SNL? In 2025?

  67. ChaltaHaiShellBRight Avatar

The standards for attractiveness, particularly for women in the public eye, have become completely insane. They were not easy to meet to begin with, but in the past two decades, celebrity women who are considered attractive have started to look like a different species altogether.

It might be hard for many to understand why Amy felt so bad about the joke. It’s to do with the fact that she’s naturally beautiful and that this isn’t the first time that Americans have mocked her looks.

She doesn’t want to give in to pressure from beauty standards precisely because she’s beautiful. If even she can’t escapethe pressure, what hope is there for most other people? Those sticklers who say she’s 95% there, why can’t she just go ahead and get a cosmetic fix for the 5% of herself that isn’t perfect as per modern society’s standards? These sticklers are a symbol of everything wrong with the cosmetic surgery and enhancement industry today. And she’s been studiously avoiding giving in to the pressure to conform.

You’ll see this with many other women, regular women as well as models and actresses. Julia Louis-Dreyfus who made her hair even curlier for Seinfeld than before to defy the men who said she’d be hot if she straightened her hair (it’s the story of many curly girls). Plus- sized models who look amazing and would never agree to lose weight to do regular modelling. Actresses who stop getting nose jobs redone. Women who let their hair go grey naturally even as they take great care not to let their skin look aged. We women make our choices, even celebrities do in the limited freedom they have in terms of appearance,  and we all defy conventions in our tiny rebellious ways.

To then take that one little freedom afforded to her and to mock the beautiful woman’s appearance, it feels deliberate and targeted.

It especially wasn’t funny to have used that as an example of what happens if water doesn’t have flouride. Since when does flouride make your teeth smaller lol. But this is a lesser point. The main problem was the rubbing in of the insane beauty standards.

  68. daftsweaters Avatar

Soft times we live in. A millionaire got poked fun at for having buck teeth. Who gives a shit.

  69. GivMHellVetica Avatar

They poked fun at the character she plays on an HBO show, not her.

What a fuss over a script.

  70. UtahUtopia Avatar

It’s like my friends company who found imitation knock-offs being sold of his product.

He reached a level of success that garnered attention and mimicry. Be honored!

  71. This_Reward_1094 Avatar

Yup everyone is safe to make fun except when the joke is on you.

  72. Apprehensive-Lock751 Avatar

First off, she didnt bitch and moan. Second, it had nothing to do with them spoofing her, it was that they ONLY spoofed her. It made no sense in the context of the joke.

If they were spoofing the cast of white lotus, itd be parody. She just caught a random stray.

  73. pillkrush Avatar

“With comedy sometimes you’re gonna piss people off”

not all jokes are worth dying on a hill for. if anything comedians need to take more responsibility for their jokes, can’t just hide behind “you just need thicker skin, it’s just a joke”. words can hurt; isn’t your whole job to entertain? going after low hanging fruit like her teeth makes you a class clown. don’t call yourself a professional comedian if you don’t have better jokes

  74. PlanetLandon Avatar

Punching up is funny. Punching down is not.

  75. P4ULUS Avatar

I agree. The show this year tried to pimp out her teeth to gain views. What do they expect?

  76. klimekam Avatar

Updoot because I hadn’t watched SNL in ages and decided to give it a go that night, but that joke made me turn it off and give up on it again. Making fun of people’s appearances is lazy and not funny. I’d rather watch Netflix specials of people who are actually funny.

  77. Dull_Bid6002 Avatar

It was a fat joke, but instead of making fun of their weight they made fun of their teeth. And it wasn’t even a clever joke, it was implying she has bad teeth because they aren’t perfect. It’d be like someone who is a little overweight being made fun of by portraying them as morbidly obese just because they are a little overweight.

It was meanspirited and unnecessary. The actress called them out on it and SNL agreed then apologized. Comedy is hard and they missed big time on this swing.

  78. fadedhalo10 Avatar

If Pete Davidson had to apologise to Dan Crenshaw, for saying he looked like a bad guy in a porno, they can apologise to Aimee Lou Wood, for a one note impression. Their main mistake was not having Chloe Fineman do the impression, as she normally does a better job, and the impression would have been mainly verbal, and not focused on the actresses teeth

  79. AlexDKZ Avatar

I wonder if they will ever apologize to Sinead O’Connor. Not that it would do much good now, sadly.

  80. br0therherb Avatar

Agreed. I’m so tired of this sensitive society lol. What are we allowed to joke about and make fun of these days?

  81. Grumpy_001 Avatar

Her teeth are like that and they portrayed her as such. I agree that they should not have apologised. If she’s so sensitive to it, then get your teeth redone!

I agree that the overly sensitive culture is a little too much

  82. gnivsarkar007 Avatar

She was the only person with no power they took a shot at, that makes it punching down in an otherwise punching up skit. How no one saw that is beyond me. Everyone needs to get over Aimee’s looks, she is perfectly beautiful and some people on screen should look like common people with no veneers. The apology was definitely warranted.
