I’ve worked for Child Protective Services for a year and a half. AMA

r/

This has been the worst job of my life. I dread waking up every day and I live for my weekends. The things I have to see and the people I work with do not make the pay worth it. I handed in my two weeks notice 2 hours ago. AMA

Why do you hate it? Doesn’t it make you happy to help kids?

Edit: Not trying to be rude or anything. Just trying to figure out if the job actually makes you feel like you can make a difference and if no, why not?

    Does CPS ever harm children?

What’s the worst situation you’ve had to help with?

I knew someone that who had worked as an advocate for kids in the CPS system and she was totally scarred from it. After working her position for a few years and seeing so many terrible things she cannot erase from her memory, she quit. During her exit interview they had the audacity to tell her she should have been seeing a therapist from the start… Sure would have been nice if they had suggested that when they hired her, but here we are.

What’s your degree and what was your salary?

I had a friend who worked for CPS as a social worker, and the job messed with her head so bad. She lasted two years, then quit because she was losing her mind with seeing all those neglected and abused kids.

Thank you for doing a really tough job for as long as you were able.

Why does child protection waste so much time on families who don’t need them rather than closing cases that aren’t needed and spend more time dealing with children who are actually at risk?

Does the mental health history of parents automatically raise red flags for the CPS?

thank you for trying, and the work you did do. I don’t blame anybody for leaving the field. I think one of the biggest things that surprised me is how differently (at least in my state) each county CPS operates. Have you found that to be true in your state? You said the pay was drastically different

As a foster parent, thank you for what you did! Is it true that there are laws that are in favor of bio parents and make it harder to terminate rights?

Which state? And what was your annual salary including Overtime. I was called for this job but decided not to move forward.

What is something you’d like changed about CPS

I’m considering going into social work, I was wondering with your position, was it hard to get into? Is it entry level? What were the job requirements? I only have an AA right now

To put this nicely, excluding you

Why are yall essentially useless for cases that actually need help but go over the top for kids in a good home????

I don’t understand this as a victim of this myself

Why does all the energy and resources go to kids who do not need to be taken out instead of people like me who are living with genuine monsters?

Furthermore, why are cases dropped more and more and then unanswered after multiple reports made by multiple children in the home?

In addition to this what is up with the “Oh damn can’t prove you are being raped at home oh well bye” shit that’s pulled? Even when the child has mental health issues that point towards abuse or adults making reports?

Most of the terrible cases like mine never even make it into the courtroom.

Do you think there is prejudice against families who seem well off? Again relating to my story it seems the more money the parents have the less inclined CPS is to actually do something.

To make it clear i am in no ways blaming you but I’m blaming the awful system who let people like me trapped in abuse with no way out

how shady are the people you work with? aka how likely they are assisting abusers and traffickers in obtaining “prey”

I’ve had two close family members do the exact same as you in the last 5-6 years. It just took too much of a toll on them.

I hope your mental and emotional health improve drastically in the next few weeks!
