Why am I always being summoned for jury duty?

r/

My wife never gets summoned for jury duty. My friends WISH they were summoned for jury duty. Yet I seem to get summoned every other year. Are they picking on me or what? I’ve been told that jury summons are sent out at random but Im not sure that’s possible. Could it be due to the fact that my real name is the whitest-sounding name you can possibly have?

Just bad luck, jury selection is a random process so you just happen to get bopped once you get thrown back into the pool

Truly random processes often have behaviors that don’t look random to us, because our brains are wired for pattern recognition.

If you flipped a fair coin 50 times, it wouldn’t be surprising (mathematically) to see a run of 5 or even 6 of the same thing in a row. It is common for a shuffled deck of cards to have a flush in it somewhere. However, when we encounter these things, something in our brain finds it odd.

Unless your local courts are using bad software, you’re just the guy.

It really is just random. Perhaps you should buy a lottery ticket! Maybe you will get picked there too. 😉

I’m fascinated. As a 20+ year registered voter I never have been

I have been called 3 times by the state and once by the Choctaw nation of Oklahoma. It is awful. I can’t do it, I am disabled and I have to get a letter from my doctor everytime. The last time she wrote ‘will never be able to preform jury duty’ never, lol.

When you register to vote. I think they pull from those lists.

I got it less than a year from when i turned 18

My local laws have it so that if you are summoned for Jury Duty but the process is canceled before you can report then you are re-entered into the jury selection process after 6 months. If you report to the selection location and then it’s canceled you are removed from the selection process and cannot be called again for 2 years. You are also removed for 2 years if you are selected and serve in a jury.

I’m not 100% sure but I believe that means that if you are selected but they cancel before you can report in person they will just call you again every 6 months until you report in person. Keep in mind that you might be assigned to a jury selection panel that is then canceled before they ever even send out a notice and you will be drawn again the next opportunity for a jury in 6 months again.

I was asked 3 times in a row within about a 2 or 3 year period, my husband has never been asked. Although I know it is, it’s still hard to believe it’s random.

Because you’re not ignoring it unlike most citizens

I had a run of this in the early 2000’s. Seemed like it was every year for three in a row but I was never picked before that and never since. My pet peeve wasn’t about being summoned but that I never do anything else. They just send me home. I’ve never even been asked the questions that show how opinionated I am before they send me home. Just a don’t need you every time after sitting in an uncomfortable chair for awhile.

    High five! Me, too.

I don’t think it has anything to do with our names.

Must be nice being able to get away from the usual routine for awhile. Your job can’t fire you for taking on jury duty over and over can they?

  15. 40ozSmasher Avatar

I got summoned almost every year for 12 years. My boss said he had never experienced this in 30 years of business. Made me wonder if someone knew me at the courthouse.

It’s done by either voter registration or vehicle registration. Is your wife registered to vote and/or the registered owner of your vehicle(s)?

Like clockwork I get picked every 3 years for it, jokes on them, im brown and never get picked to be on a jury.

  18. StrawberryFriendly48 Avatar

Think about it this way, some people go their entire lives never serving jury duty.

  19. Freedom_58 Avatar

Once you’re in their system, it will be clockwork for you.

Depending on your last jury attendance, you’ll be called in 2, 4, or 6 years.

My last one was in 2020. I served 4 weeks on a grand jury. So I figured I’d be called again in 2026. Or maybe they won’t. 🤪

I’ve been called six times in three states. I work in insurance so each time I get excused

  21. dickeyclubhouse Avatar

i’m jealous! i want to do jury duty, at least once. never been called. my brother is disabled and can’t do it and has been called 4 times lol

  22. Concrete_Grapes Avatar

    Might be how they pick.

Usually it’s registered voter rolls. Does she not vote?

In Alaska, it’s who registers for the PFD (more do that, than vote). Some use combos, like voter info, vehicle registration, tax info for property, etc.

Likely she’s dodged systems of selection, in a way that out your name on them more frequently.

    Quit tipping the bailiff.

  24. rtreesucks Avatar

In some places you’re excused for a certain period of time between serving btw

  25. Lot48sToaster Avatar

I used to have this problem too. I used to get a jury summons every other year since I turned 19 until I was about 28/29. I haven’t gotten a summons in about five years. It is random it just doesn’t feel that way when you’ve been called five times in 10 years.

  26. RoamingDrunk Avatar

Where I live, the names are pulled from active voter rolls. So you’re more likely to be called if you vote in every election.

  27. pastysatan Avatar

Do you have social media accounts? And if so, do you voice your political opinions on them much?

I remember going through a paralegal course in college and the professor said they typically look for the most middle of the line people the can find that don’t typically have heavy bias towards things.

  28. itssurelyok Avatar

I feel the same. I get called all the time. My husband only 2 times in 25 years we have been together.

Do you have an ex who’s a bureaucrat?

  30. randomly-what Avatar

I got summoned 8 times in 10 years. That’s more than is legal where I am.

2 times it was for a city in a state I hadn’t lived in for years.

It absolutely feels like I’m being picked on, so I understand.

  31. UneasyFencepost Avatar

    You’re just a good juror!

It has been shown that the computer program used in some municipalicies has a flaw where in fact it is not random. File a freedom-of-information act to the source code of the computer program and get it inspected to see if there is an error.

I have been summoned for jury duty 7 times in 3 different states. Served twice. Once a civil trial, one death penalty case. (Death penalty hung jury) so got 2 life without
It’s definitely the voter registration list. I don’t mind serving, but it’s a huge PITA waiting around. I once was at the courthouse for 7 hours as they tried to seat 4 different trials.

  36. invisible_23 Avatar

I’m not super convinced it’s random either, my husband and I had both never been summoned and then last year we both got summoned within a month of each other. That’s quite the coincidence if it’s truly random.

I was honest when I interviewed and stated I have a bias towards women and against the police and they didn’t call me back.
